I really like Hyperion's new approach, thanks ssolie.

On a side note, I see Hyperion's website now has a Forum link on its navigation menu. But still no direct mention of AOS. Is there a reason? And also no link to the Blog.

I'd suggest to consolidate / integrate the News section with the Blog, and streamline / update the navigation menu, such as:

News
Products (AmigaOS / Games)
About [aka Corporate section]
Support [aka Forum]
Distributors [aka Where to Buy]

Just my two cents. Keep on with the good work.

Cheers,
Shufflepuck

agree with you; at least, there should be a link to the nice blog in Hyperion's site.

So, the long and the short of this thread is that noone really knows what's in Update 3 and that it's still all speculation.

I'm pretty sure I know what is included but then are we really sure about anything?

Seriously though, one of my goals is more frequent releases. With that in mind I will be pushing for the public X1000 AmigaOS release to be as early as possible. This could mean some parts may not be 100% complete (for example, we shipped the Sam460ex without an audio driver) but I would rather ship the product early than sit on it for weeks waiting for a driver. Software is easy to update and cheap to distribute. Customers now expect frequent updates. You need a darn good reason to hold back a release these days IMHO.

By the way, the best way to get a hold of me is via email. If you post a message to me in some web forum it is not likely to ever reach me.

Have fun!

That sounds really logical and good. Maybe we even can bring new users/developer soon or later :)

I can't say to be a fan of extreme programming myself, but i like this particular concept brought into Amiga land thank you for giving OS4 development a new spin!

except sobj files you can usually copy all of them to another partition and use multi-assigns.

sobjs' are subject to the SOBJS: assign, so you can have them on a separate partition in their own directory as well. The multiAssign will do the trick and maybe you may put MARvel to good use.

correct. marvel is a must and should actually be integrated into the assign command.
i used to have a multi assign for the sobjs:. but that was at some point problematic. missing version strings is one reason. using softlinks all over the place is another one. all in all i decided to leave the sobjs: in sys:sobjs. that's easier.

most other assigns - expecially c:, libs: and fonts: are multiassigned.
unfortunately for example timberwolf had problems with the multi-font-assign.

Agreed 100%!

I too have a multiassign arranged for SOBJS: the main for SYS:SObjs and the second for the third parties ones. Must say that I have not yet ran into any problem regarding .so's whatsoever, but i keep my fingers crossed.

@ssolie

Can you give any definites of what is included in update 3 or a definite release date?

It may contain... doesn't really advance this thread. It definitely contains... does.

It may be out... doesn't really advance this thread. It definitely will be out... does.

and if you are not sure, just say "not sure".

If it turns out to be anticlimactic it could put a lot of people of OS4.1.x

I have to say the Blog and the Forum are very welcoming addition by Hyperion and the AmigaOS team, and I really appreciate being kept informed on the great work and time you guys continue to put into OS4 and I really hope you guys can push the OS with the hardware on the X1000 to really show off what AmigaOS can do a modern hardware and lay the foundations for the future. Keep up the good work (but if you can pick up the pace that would be grateful)

@OldFart

Thanks for the link.

I think that I will try something different for update 3.
Clean install then set prefs then add Archive bit to file protection of all files then backup clean install.
Then add my user stuff .

dont you mean 'hopefully never' as if there are no further issues, there will not be a need for update 4.

@Mechanic

Well, sounds reasonable ...

OS 4.1.3 update for all
OS 4.2 in development

4.1.4 only if later fixes are needed

So, if update turns well, yes, there might never be OS 4.1.4

Time to move forward (and pay for the next revision)
