Apple seem to have done pretty well out of this philosophy...

In the lowest point of Apple history they where still pretty much alive and relevant that Amiga ever was, IMHO. When Hyperion started working on AmigaOS – Amiga was a corpse. Now it's still a corpse, but it's been dug out.

Hyperion can't copy Apple's way just by being arrogant and closed. You need favorable press, products that sells and ~50 billion dollars in cash.

Summer is just around the corner. How "the last hope of Amiga", the X1000, is doing? More NDAs, pre-orders, beta releases of software?

20-30 milions EUR would suffice for successful restart of the Amiga platform. However, I don´t think Hyperion has so much money (or even fracture of such amount). As I wrote many times before, they did really well - considering resources available.

>>Hyperion started working on AmigaOS – Amiga was a corpse. Now it's still a corpse, but it's been dug out.

I wouldn't go that far, it's certainly in a better state than before Hyperion started porting the OS to PPC. And better still now that we have not one but three PPC motherboards with the possible X1000 to follow.

There was a time when we only had to do with a BlizzardPPC so I am grateful for what has been done considering the very risky and expensive market.

>>Summer is just around the corner. How "the last hope of Amiga", the X1000, is doing? More NDAs, pre-orders, beta releases of software?

I agree that more news would be good, keeping people informed but they might have their reasons not to do so. I have been far too occupied with my X500 project...

Since their C=OS goes into beta testing next month and they indicate shipping of some products before that, my understanding is that they are still shipping with Windows at first. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about this.

C64x will be initially shipped with Ubuntu until COS 1.x is finished, which will be shipped out to those who got Ubuntu. Windows is being considered as a option for customers to choose from but COS will be by default.

Thanks for the clarification. Those early news stories week 1 had differing info.

Following in the foot steps of the A1 I see. All those nasty posts about the Teron boards & now c=usa follows the same path, quite funny.

PA6T was released in 2007. And I agree, it was superior CPU in its time (and it still offers realtively good performance per Watt).

Intel Core i7-2657M (Dual Core/4 threads, 1.6Ghz, 2.7Ghz Turbo) has 17 watts TDP. 2557M includes 256bit wide AVX SIMD and IGP.

Intel Core i7-2820QM (Quad Core/8 threads, 2.3Ghz, 3.4Ghz Turbo) has 45 watts TDP i.e. about 11 watts per core.

Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 Mobile (Dual Core/2 threads, 2.53Ghz) has 25 watts TDP.

AMD Phenom II Quad-Core Mobile P960 (Quad Core/4 threads, 1.8Ghz) has 25 watts i.e. about 6.25 watts per core.

Please, show me any 64 bit x86 dual-core CPU with 1500 SpecFp2000 single core performance and 14W TDP (power disparition of both cores of PA6T at 2000 MHz excluding rest of SoC) from 05/06.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PWRficient

"PWRficient processors were initially shipped to select customers in February 2007 and were released for worldwide sale in Q4 2007"

Intel Core 2 Merom was released around Jul 2006. Core 2 Duo L7700 1.8 GHz has 17 Watts TDP and released on Sep 2007.

Intel Core 2 Duo processor E6400, 2.13Ghz delivers SPECfp2000 = 2168 (per core)

So we're sort of arguing whether a computer that might be released this year or next year is 4 or 6 years out of date?

17, not 14 W. Released on Sep 2007, not 05/06. Adding needed supporting chipset its performance per Watt will be still worser than those of PA6T (25 W with 1500 SpecFp2000).

Your turn.

+1 pavlor!

but why is this even still going?

that CUSA is selling an Amiga branded X86 box with a retro themed case & emulation software is a fun idea and all but well it's not going to set the world on fire.

The "ComodorOS" brand of linux is also a bit meh, but at least it will imitate the real thing for the same look.

The new Commodore Amigas should be selling in the tens of thousands (debate is that yearly or monthly sales volume). COS 1.x series is basically a place holder till a follow on modern OS can be developed. I think the main fear in certain camps is that with that level of sales volume, very few will know of their existence and therefore become irrelevant. That's my guess at least.

Your turn.

Intel PM965 mobile chipset has 8 watts i.e. 17 watts + 8 watts = 25 watts.
Intel GM965 mobile chipset+IGP has 13 watts i.e. 17 watts + 13 watts = 30 watts. A desktop PC must have a display controller.

One could underclock Intel Core 2 Duo L7700 for targeted 1500 SpecFp2000 points i.e. 1.4Ghz.

---
On the mobility subject, AMD G-Series T40E (Dual Core Bobcat 1.0Ghz + Radeon HD 6250M iGPU) has 6.4 watts. This Bobcat core 1.0Ghz consumes 0.9 watts.

This is lower than the current AMD C-50's 9 watts (Dual Core Bobcat 1.0Ghz + Radeon HD 6250M iGPU).

According to http://www.netbooknews.com/18869/amd-showcases-lower-power-ontario-c-50-apu-for-tablets/
This ACER Iconia W500 tablet device has AMD C-50 5 watts version.

Only one PCIe x16 line and RAM controller (only for 4 GB RAM)...

For full features of PA6T you need
I/O Controller for PCIe
another for 10GbitE

etc. (remeber, PA6T has two memory controllers and supports up to 16 GB memory per channel)

Given the way things are time will tell.

The failure rate of new X86 OS's is rather high.

tho even if it succeeds, awareness or the original Amiga product & it's current development will bleed over from the Amiga branded X86 machines & thus will actually be beneficial.

but hey the real Amigas are already irrelevant to CommodoreUSA so nothing would change.

As I wrote many times before, they did really well - considering resources available.

If they had done so well it wouldn't have taken them 7 years to bring a usable AmigaOS PPC port. And they would have united people, not split it: we today have 3 incompatible solutions, two of which are locked to PPC outdated hardware. I wouldn't call it a "success", no matter how much ressources they had.

If I was to build an OS, I would look for an existing solution before writing a new one... And if I decided to write a new one, I surely wouldn't hire game developers for that.
