Man was told he would never fly, I'm sure that was considered "fact" at the time. There are many ways to skin a cat & many forms of "SMP", don't be so sure they don't come up with some way of using both cores. Your version of SMP may never happen, doesn't mean Hyperion's version won't.

Also, SMP was never promised to be part of the 4.2 initial release. That feature has a long ways to go, but the intention was to try to add it to 4.2 at some point.

I don't know how many different forms of SMP there are, but I know that there are more ways to support some kind of dual core support that are not called SMP.

I also am not sure that it was SMP that has been proposed or promised for OS4.x, but simply some kind of Dual Core support at some time in the future. Even that might not be promised, but simply hoped for and being looked into to determine feasibility. It could always be put on the road map and then later removed if it was found to be counter productive to implement.

This is all speculation, so I will just wait for official announcements from Hyperion and Steve Solie.

P.S. I will be in favour of moderating ANYONE who categorically says that something controversial (on this site) is "impossible" or "fantasy", as this can be inflamatory. On the other hand, if someone adds "I think" or "I believe" or an explanation(*) (and does not use the word "fact" without having proof), then I don't think there should be a problem. Everyone is allowed to think what they want, as long as they are polite.

(* = saying that someone else says it is impossible is NOT an explanation, unless you give their explanation.)

SMP is not impossible. There are many operating systems with full SMP support. Proper SMP on Amiga is impossible without breaking compatibility.

In proper SMP implementations when one core is handling interrupt it should not suspend other cores. Amiga OS API guarantees other cores are stopped when serving interrupts.

I was talking about *controversial* topics, which are by their nature likely to upset people. Talking in "absolutes" (e.g. "absolute not possible" without any caveats or explanation) is likely to upset people.

As you gave an actual explanation for why you think something is impossible (which was what I was hoping for when said someone needs to say "I think"), I find this acceptable. Particularly since it was said very politely. So thumbs up from me.

I suspect that your stated problem is actually not a real problem (if handled correctly) but I need more time to consider it in more detail (I may know OS theory, but I'm not exactly experienced in writing an OS!). Perhaps someone else has an idea how it could be handled?

I have amended my earlier post to be clearer, since some people apparently have a hard time understand context or intention. But please note that if anyone HAD broken (what I intended with) my request, then I would not have been nearly so tolerant. Going against moderator requests (in public) has NEVER been acceptable behaviour (it is a TOS violation), even if those requests may seem unreasonable to you personally. Please use PMs if you disagree with what a moderator has asked you to do.
