@terminills

Hi,

I am not sure if I understood you correctly... Will it be possible to make Arix based distributions that are freely distributable like it is the case with AspireOS or Icaros Desktop that use the new kernel (expecially for driver support)? I mean f.e. Icaros Desktop based on Arix kernel? If yes I would personally welcome it and hope for a good future.

@michalsc or @terminills or @damocles

or any member of the Arix team, please fill out this form:

The API is compatible to this type of AROS

[_] x86 ABI_v0
[_] x86 ABI_V1
[_] x86_64 (ABI_V?)

Graphic subsystem provides an interface to:

[_] 3D via GPU
[_] 3D via software using AMP
[_] 3D is currently panned but not included
[_] 3D will be planned for a future release

[_] 2D acceleration on GUI via GPU
[_] 2D acceleration via software using AMP
[_] 2D is currently panned but not included
[_] 2D will be planned for a future release

[_] video acceleration via overlay or via shader of the GPU
[_] video acceleration via software using AMP
[_] video acceleration panned but not included
[_] video acceleration will be planned for a future release

Will the ARIX system include some kind of x68 emulation / compatibility?

[_] No, but users are free to use UAE JUAE with AOS3.9 or AROS 68k
[_] There is a version of JUAE with AROS 68k included.
[_] We are working on a next generation super 68k JIT using secret technologies that will make Rosetta look like a millstone

Is there something special about the license for ARIX

[_] Binary will be free
[_] Binary commercial
[_] Free demo version
[_] Open Source
[_] not decided yet.

Some special software goodies in the first ARIX version like:

- 3D Shooter, with 3D monitor support
- Video player with encoder, decoder and video editing software
- 3D Renderer that will make Blender look like MS-Paint
- advanced port of MS-Office 2015
- .............................................

---------------------

Every answer is welcome.

OK, this has been on my mind for a little bit and I thought I'd put it out there for michalsc or whomever to address.

First, an assumption: I assume that one of the reasons AROS and other AOS derivatives have never managed to have Java or Mono is that the old API is too limited and creating any new one to allow such tools to appear is to much work.

So, my question is, does the advent of this dual-kernel open the door to more modern tools like Java or Mono? Awesome, if so. I'd love to see these tools make an appearance as well.

No, not exactly

The Java virtual machine is not the real problem but creating all the Classes (called libraries on other systems) needed for Java programs with GUI is to much work.

Java is not only a compiler and interpreter it is huge wrapper for an OS.

No!

http://www.jamiga.org/ maybe but all the GUI classes needed for most Java applications are missing.

AROS is already free and should be able to give people a good idea of what ARIX is about and wasn't there something about a free hosted version anyway. Also without knowing how much they are going to charge it's difficult to say if they'd have a higher take up. If it's under $20 dollars they might not get that many less copies shifted than if it was free.

Ultimately it's their product, they've stepped up to the mark and invested their time and maybe a little money into ARIX so why should we be trying to dictate what we think they should do, especially when details about it are currently pretty scare.

I don't see anyone in this thread "dictating" what the ARIX Foundation should do with their work, but since very little information was available, some members speculated what might happen, while others (like myself) expressed their own opinions on what they would like to see happen.

The ARIX Foundation members are adults and free to choose their own way, but they might be interested in reading the opinions of others within this tiny community. They are free to disregard any opinions they don't agree with.

I don't see any problem with any member here expressing their own opinions and wishes for how they would like ARIX to turn out, as long as they are expressing their thoughts as private opinions, and not claiming they know what the ARIX Foundation members are going to do, unless they actually have direct knowledge of such facts.

@all.

There still seems to be some confusion, even within the information revealed.

ARIX uses AROS/Amiga APIs. Whatever applies to any other amiga-oid system still applies to ARIX. Whatever software is, or isnt available to AROS is the same software available to ARIX (although ARIX uses abi v1, so thus far software base is minimal).

The things that seperate ARIX and AROS are mostly low level under the hood changes, plus maybe a surprise or 2.

Bare in mind I dont speak on their brhalf. Im just a guy who has ARIX who also has a heavy AROS background, so perhaps its easier for me to interperet the info revealed than it is for some others.

I'm looking forward to trying it out on some different systems. Kind of rather they'd kept it under wraps until a download was ready though. Could have been an early Christmas gift maybe. Early publicity seems rarely a good thing in amigaland.

That sounds really encouraging - thanks for clarifying. It sounds strange to say, but with the major parts of ARIX open-sourced, you can definitely count on me buying a copy. Good luck with it.

Definitely interested in the multicore capabilities. What is the maximum of cores allowed?

Just thought I should make a quick note that I could be mistaken about ARIX using abi v1 exclusively.
Really I dont know for sure. Originally Id thought it was, but now Im not so confident, so thought I should correct myself so as not to spread misinformation

Well based on this thread, I'm half interested in what Arix could be, I agree with many that the web site could and should of been better, I learned more in this thread than on there. still interesting times, i guess its a wait and see.

If they have a PPC version ready and running, I would like to test it out on my X1000 to see what it is like.

I submitted a request to become a beta tester, but have not yet heard back regarding that request. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Kind of related...

Would it be possible for linux to support soft reboot?

Would it make any sence?
Would there be any use for it??
(faster aeros / Arix reboots???? done already??)

On linux, the most often problem to me seems to be GUI (window manager) error and in Ubuntu & Mint those often gets handled on the fly allready???

(sorry if unclear post ... I blame my neigbour and his vodka)

Arix... founders.... please speak up.

Even if the website had been a visual masterpiece and the counter had been perfectly timed, the "getting this right" goal would have been missed anyway if you just keep this mum immediately afterwards.

We all understand it's a work in progress - lots of work - lots of progress - but what could possibly be wrong in sharing as much as you can, as clearly as you can?

thanks

@Seiya

you mean a download-version for the general public? I do not think so...

from facebook 25.11.2013:
"As such we are no longer accepting any new applications. For those who have applied, expect in the next three weeks to be contacted by private email with instructions."

and "Phase I testing"

Three weeks would be up to mid december for people taking part in Phase I testing. So I personal do not expect anything for public in 2013. And there are still some parts missing (I think network support was mentioned). Before that is ready there will be propably no public version. Of course it is all only personal view because I am not a "team member".
