Hi All,

We're testing the development version of Ubuntu 15.04 on our AMIGA PowerPC computers. Here are some screenshots:

Lubuntu 15.04 PowerPC (AMIGA one X1000):

ubuntu MATE 15.04 PowerPC (AMIGA one X1000):

Lubuntu 15.04 PowerPC with MATE desktop (Sam460ex):

Threads:

http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=2847

http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=2840

Spectre660 released a PowerPC netinstall ISO for (L)ubuntu 15.04 for all Sam PowerPC computers: Sam_Lubuntu_15.04_Netinstall-1.ISO

Nexus has created a 15.04 initrd.gz file for the AMIGA one X1000 recently.

Download: initrd-15.04-modified.gz

(I suggest to download the install initial RAM disk with a right click on the link and then with the menu point "Save target as" or something like this.)

Copy it to your CF card and boot it with the following commands:

Quote:
CFE> ramdisk -z -addr=0x24000000 -fatfs cf0:initrd-15.04-modified.gz

Quote:
CFE> boot -elf -noints -fatfs cf0:vmlinux-3.19

Mac-on-Linux/"PR" KVM works without any problems on ubuntu MATE 15.04 with kernel 3.19 RC7.

I installed it with the following Debian package today: mol-kvm_0.9.73.0-ubuntu_powerpc.deb

Screenshots:

Please test Ubuntu 15.04 on your PowerPC computer.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Christian

Thank you to you and all the others Linux gurus of Hyperion forum.

This initrd, unlike previous ones, detect well my disks.

Installing 15.04...just after have completed installation of 14.04, busy LinuxPPC week-end !

edit : didn't you miss to add "setenv bootargs "root=/dev/ramdisk"" in your procedure above ?

@zzd10h

Did you need to add "root=/dev/ramdisk" to your bootargs?

@xeno74

During the installation of 14.10, I forgot to add this line and it booted on my previous installed Linux system "root=/dev/sda4" instead of the initrd.

Nevertheless, 15.04 installed and working !

Thank you for the advices on Hyperion forum

Hi All,

I tested QEMU 2.2 on ubuntu MATE 15.04 with the kernel 4.00 alpha 4 today. I booted my first Linux distribution that I ever bought. It's S.u.S.E Linux 5.0 from 1997. That's really impressed to work with my first Linux distribution and with the modern ubuntu MATE 15.04 PowerPC together at the same time.

It's nice to see the old S.u.S.E FVWM 2 and the old Netscape browsers.

Have a nice weekend!

Christian

Hi All,

ubuntu MATE 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) beta 1 PowerPC was released.

Beta link - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/releases/vivid/beta-1/

Notes - https://ubuntu-mate.org/blog/ubuntu-mate-vivid-beta1/

Only for Power Macs: Same rules apply as to 14.10 etc, if you have a radeon card then you need to force pci mode to stop freezing.

Tracker - http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/334/builds/89692/testcases

Quote Martin Wimpress owner of ubuntu MATE PowerPC:

+Christian Zigotzky I've been talking to the Ubuntu developers about including "out of the box" support for Amiga PowerPC, such as X1000. They are up for it, but I'll need your help 😃

@Pat: Could you help Martin because of the "out of the box" support for Amiga PowerPC, please? Link: https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/108331279007926658904

@xeno74
I guess I was very lucky. Too heady with success at reinstalling Ubuntu 12.04LTS I decided to test 15.04 myself, never considering that it might wipe out my Amiga OS4 disk! It didn't, but it did mess up my 12.04 install, and not being able to give the right info for internet connection, 15.04 conked out on me (I had to quit, against its advice) midway.

Then when I tried to boot 12.04, I was told there was nothing bootable at "/" It did offer to upgrade to "12.04.2" but apparently that was not in good faith.

I booted the DVD again. GParted and Disk Utility didn't show anything wrong with /dev/sdb1, so I took a look with the install program. It offered to install 12.04 "alongside the existing 12.04.5" (!), so I let it have a go. I think it just made a mess of the disk, so I'll probably clear it up and install one more time.

But I was lucky and learned some things should just be left up to the experts.

Oh, I was also surprised to discover that OS4's Media Toolbox can no longer even look at the disk! It offers to "Install" it, but I declined.

Oho! I checked one more thing before calling it a night. I now have a bootable Ubuntu at sdb5!

Fantastic! Well done!

@All

With systemd, the mate-settings-daemon starts 10 minutes later after the desktop login. I found a way to reactivate Upstart. You can reactivate Upstart with "sudo apt-get install upstart-sysv". After that the mate-settings-daemon works without any problems.

By the way, I updated my ubuntu MATE PowerPC to version 15.04 beta 2 yesterday.

Beta 2 download for Power Macs: ubuntu-mate-15.04-beta2-desktop-powerpc.iso

Download Ubuntu 15.04 ramdisk image (initrd.gz) for the AMIGA one X1000: initrd-15.04-modified.gz

Note: initrd-15.04-modified.gz currently works for installation only with the latest kernel *release* *candidate* of version 3.19 since it has been modified before the final 3.19 kernel has been released. I suggest to download the initrd-15.04-modified.gz with a right click on the link and then with the menu point "Save target as" or something like this.

Epiphany is available for Lubuntu, Xubuntu, and ubuntu MATE 15.04 PowerPC. It's a very fast WebKit browser.

I released the installation instructions for the Ubuntu Server 15.04 in the Hyperion forum:

http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=2943&p=32906#p32906.

If you find any mistakes in the installation instructions please let me know.

Christian

Does this uninstall systemd, or leave it installed but inert?

@xeno74

I'd love to try this on my Pegasos II. Any hints on how to install it? It looks like the available ramdisk image is for the AmigaOne X1000 only.. and so are the install instructions...

Gr8 work btw!

Cheers,

Dragster

@Dragster

Thank you for your answer. I'm sorry I'm not a Pegasos II expert. I think you need the ubuntu MATE Power Mac DVD.

Beta 1: ubuntu-mate-15.04-beta1-desktop-powerpc.iso

Beta 2: ubuntu-mate-15.04-beta2-desktop-powerpc.iso

Daily build ISO: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/daily-live/current/

I found some links about installing Ubuntu on a Pegasos II:

powerdeveloper

obligement

morph.zone

obligement

@bison

It removes systemd-sysv.
