To quote a good friend, use of the P1022 processor with its non-standard fpu would require "different executables for FPR-based FPU (standard PPC) and GPR-based FPU (SPE PPC)"

So, do we really want to complicate our software environment further?

And again, is anybody 100% sure this is a P1022?

See the big cube system on the A-EON stand with the card on top that says X5000, it's the same one that was demoed at the Amsterdam event.

AFAIK a fast clocked digital CMOS circuit needs 4x times the power when clock rate is doubled.

Getting double performance is cheaper when done with double cores instead of a double cloch rate, state of the art OSes have (S)MP and don't rely on single core speed.

Not sure about the exact model, but the (very nice quality, printed, hardcover) manual which was on show at the stand talked about Linux PowerPCSPE. Also I talked to someone at the stand, and he confirmed it's an e500 core with the SPE FPU.

I asked, because I have a Linux Pegasos II/G4, running 24/7 since mid-2007, and I'm slightly worried that box might give in any day... Simply because of the age. So having an option to replace it is good. I would still go for a PowerPC box if possible, and under Linux it's not that big of a problem if it's a PowerPCSPE, because binary compatibility is not a concern.

Bingo! That is the point everyone seems to be missing, it IS an issue under NG OS'.

Well, an additional layer of the problem what most users also don't get, that FPU is not only used for floating point math. In many cases, it's used for things like memory copy, simply because on previous PPCs we've had it was faster than doing it with the integer unit. Now all that highly optimized, time critical code will be suddenly super slow, because it's running emulated... Of course you could re-release all applications with such optimizations removed, but then you penalize all other platforms, just to have decent performance on this one.

Of course, real world tests will say the final word. But I won't hold my breath for a surprise.

Yes, but there was no keyboard or mouse attached AFAIR, so you could only look at the thing which was running some videos IIRC, but not actually use it. Hyperion at their stand had an X1K and some other hardware, but no X5K.

So the only X5000 in Neuss which was possible to try if you wanted was at MorphOS Team. (Fix me? Maybe someone had one with Linux too?)

All in all no compatible FPU seems to be quite a disadvantage but also no fatal show stopper.

Somebody who's willing to buy another copy of an OS that hasn't seen any real updates in seven years is probably not the type of person who worries about FPU speeds, so "no fatal show stopper" is probably spot on.

It'll work, but I guess it's like most times in amigaland - at best a solution from the least rows. It's a special pity as a T104x based device would not cost more. Not that a T104x based device would crack up an i7 or such, but it would be kind of "decent low end".
To sum it up in German: Knapp daneben ist auch vorbei...

At least MorphOS was shown on the X5000.

So it's a trimmed down Playstation3? At least it has more RAM :)

Perhaps Trevor seen it too when he was young

@pavlor

In that case, I started my P1025 design at the same time as they started their P1022 design (half a year before T series was announced, had I been a bit later I would have gone for T instead and saved a lot of headache). I beat them to the market by a year, and my software guy was on paternity leave for half a year while I was twiddling thumbs and working on other projects.

I really wish I could generate a lot of feelings for this thing, but "meh" just about covers it from me.

Wouldn't worry much about drivers, the QorIQ peripherals are fairly simple to support.

Worst part is someone suggested I add a PCIe slot to my P1025 board and I had trouble fitting it, even a x1. Might have been possible to squeeze in an mPCIe but I fancied an extra ethernet port more since AOS would NEVER run on that CPU family. Haha. Hahahahaha. Hahahahahahahahaha. D'oh (incidentally the same set of feelings I had yesterday when the moose I shot was too old and large to be a heffer and we weren't supposed to shoot cows).

@OldFart

The QorIQ booting-from-SD is pretty sweet, actually. Not having to burn flashroms in production is as awesome as.

Neat nice more new Amiga hardware, where spoilt now. Also notice its name the A1222, with the size too and as thedaddy point out will fit small keyboard cases, and there a kickstarter for A1200 cases to be remade, do you think they will make a limited run of AmigaONE 1200?!

I kinda had this thought of project with a Pc board a while back, based on this thread http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=57636 looks like it could easily fit.

That much is painfully obvious.

According to this document: http://www.freescale.com/files/training/doc/MULTICORE_MORE.pdf

The e500 v1 and v2 supports the FPU and the SPE (Page 28) Are this thing two different elements?

Floating - Point Embedded
Vector support - SPE

@AmigaBlitter
Using that table's terminology, all existing Amiga hardware uses the "Classic" FPU. The "Embedded" one which the e500v2 sports is not binary compatible. (Means: while it can do the same tasks, applications compiled for the "Classic" one won't work. Not without emulation anyway.)

Write your application for the OS, not the chips. That is why there is an OS.
