The main point of the Vampire is that it allows real Amiga hardware to run legacy 68k code faster than any other accelerator, so there's not really much point in comparing its performance to that of a PowerPC device running PowerPC code... |
604e 392 MHz in some modded CyberstormPPC accelerators probably runs 68k applications faster via Petunia JIT than current Vampire. |

even if so there is few things spring to mind immediately: 1.compare the price of an original ppc card plus the cost of the mod + the cost of a pci bridge and peripherials to het high resolution rtg output like vampire does to the cost of vampire itself and you will easily end up ith a ratio 10/1 if not more. besides, thisn of of availability. 2. the rtg throuhtput via zorro3 will be limited to some 7mb/s no matter ppc cpu, while vampire reaches several hundred afair. well demonstrated with the hollywood wipes demo. i bought once ppc because i have thought it will speed up such issues. it did not. 3. heat and power consumption, noot to mention portability. with vampire these factors ar much better.
..and so on, this isnt a complete list by no means..

Our discussion was about accelerators available, not their price.

CyberstormPPC can use CyberVisionPPC via expansion slot on accelerator card. Just try Quake 2 in higher resolution... (sure, cheating, Permedia2 supports 3D )

Of course Vampire has great advantage in many aspects, but it is not (yet) most powerful CPU card for Amiga. |

what is the price/performance ratio of PPC hardware compared to standard hardware?
People buy and will buy Vampire for fun not because it is beating everything else |

Exactly.
Yet, I´m amused by some posts on EAB how Vampire beats performance-wise PowerPC computers. |

I never read there (or anywhere else) that Apollo in FPGA beats PPC generally
it is fast when using certain features but for that you need adapted software and it might beat per Mhz like Gunnar says because of new concepts and optimized commands but general PPC offer more Mhz at the moment and is faster because of that and it is faster on certain aspects like RAM accessing because the hardware is newer than most of the PPC options
but as a hobby that is not that important |

As I wrote, I didn´t comment price - buying A1-500 would be far more sensible than hardware hacks on old accelerator board. Speaking about that, price/performance ratio of A1-500 is better than Vampire... |

actually this is a news thread about the vampire, not a thread to try to advocate some os4 hardware instead (which isnt available anyway). Last edited by wawa on 06-Mar-2016 at 03:28 PM.

Is the game running only in Demo-Mode? Is there a reason for that? (Joystick problem?)
Looks great otherwise! _________________ Sometimes we give people a lot of credit just because they're writing nice sentences even if it isn't adding up to much. |
