Please no Trolling in this post (Thanks!).

I was wondering what the current status on OS 4.0 is? What problems there having and what needs to be done. I have an AmigaOne G4, and I am anxious to get started with OS 4.0. My older Amigas are getting close to the grave. Just the other day the hard drive went out in my A1200. Also, what about the Amiga Lite model? How long until we can buy this! I definately want one or two of those. Thanks in advance for any information or discussion/speculation!

It regard to OS4 you know what the likely answer is going to be

"When it's done!"

@Yogi27

I think you know as much about when as most of us. I'm hoping it's sooner rather than later.

@KrasH

The pre-release will hopefully be here within a couple of weeks. The final version and the release for classic PPC cards are probably still far away.

@The_Editor

Well, the Install Guide has now been released (the current version, anyway). So maybe that gives you a hint.

@Yogi27

I was talking to Ben the other day about the status of the BPPC version of OS4 and apparently there are still a lot of issues with that version of the Operating System, partly because of the sheer variety of classic Amiga setups in use. Pretty much everyone's system is different in one way or another these days and this makes it a much bigger job to support the classic Amiga platform.

Since all the attension is (quite understandably) on the AmigaOne version at the moment, hopefully once the AmigaOne version is released we'll see a more rapid development with regard to the BPPC and CSPPC versions.

Oh, and hopefully we'll see a Shark Version as well!

@BrianHoskins

I was hoping you would be talking about OS4 for A1 with Ben.

AFAIK there haven been two reasons for the delay.

1) Problems with the GFX driver for Radeon cards.
2) Personal affairs of the Friedens.

So far I haven't seen anywhere that these issues have been resolved.
Don't see this as criticising, it is just the information I have.

On a personal note (read: PERSONAL!), I will leave the Amiga if I haven't received the Beta or have received the word that the ISO is at the copy-house by 1st of July 2004. I am in no way asking, ordering, encouraging, etc. others to do so also. This is just me, expressing what I feel.

I know there will be people glad to see me going, so I will no longer be "whining" for just ANY Beta, as I have been discussing in various places. I am in no way "threatening" Hyperion, but I would appreciate it, if they would change their policy on the Beta.

If 1st of July passes with the usual , it will be PPCLinux, Palm and Playstation2 for me and no more Amiga. But I do hope we will see something happening before that.

Don't bother asking, you'll just get annoyed with When it's Ready (Trust me, i'm the same way).

Just a waiting game as nobody ever wants to say anything but *wait and it'll be out in about 2 weeks*, but that's been going on for so long now ...... sigh. A status update would be nice without anyone having to ask though, just a simple "Still working on x problem, y problem is resolved" but when we ask alot of the time we get in trouble, so just sit back and see what happens - but don't let the delay stop your enjoyment of computing, i'm not - not anymore.

@jiyong/Yogi27

I can't say anything other than like everyone else but I can give you some ray of hope.

I should think 1:st of July should be an easy goal to reach because, according to Ben at the AmiGBG féte, the prerelease would be ready for duplication within a week (that would be right around now).

Give a couple of weeks for production and some testing and another couple for distribution I think we shuld see these in our mailboxes in the first weeks of May?

Earlier than that though I am sure we will get an official announcement that they definitely are on their way so lets hope for the best!

In any case I'm sure we shall hear news that will satisfy most Amigans before the 1:st of July.

@all:

The problem is that whenever a particular issue is mentioned as "being worked on now", it is usually followed by a long period of silence before the next "being worked on now" issue is mentioned. So people assume that Hyperion have been doing nothing else in that period, and that it must be a really difficult problem, etc, etc.

Take the Radeon driver issue - yes, it was a problem when the first beta was released to testers back in January. Yes, it took a couple of weeks before it was fixed. It was only a small problem to find and fix, all the rest of the developers were working on their other things. The world outside didn't know about the other work going on and some people assumed that the Radeon issue was on-going and a really difficult problem.

Since then, a lot more work has been done on the installation - testing it on different systems, making it easier to load, etc. Only a few developers have been doing that work, the rest have been doing other things in parallel.

Hyperion aren't the sole developers, nor are they solely responsible for delays. The "delays" are a collective responsibility, developers and testers alike, wanting to "get it right" before it is released.

These where resolved some time ago already.

This is something that I try to have as little impact as possible, but family affairs usually take precedence.

Well, I am quite certain I pointed out at some point that Issue 1 was resolved. Issue 2 is a different thing.

What do you expect? Our current deadline for the CD is tuesday. Things look good, and I am certain that this will work out. BUT, what if it doesn't? We'll get a bunch of postings accusing us of broken promises etc. Therefore, no release dates anymore. If things go well, the CD will be at the reproduction plant on middle next week.

I'm afraid that this is all I can say.

Thank you Rogue, thankyou!

I saw the installation guide, very nice and simple -- can't wait.

And if it doesn't quite go to plan, so what, I'll complain but even my wife doesn't listen to me anymore -- small bickies.

I just knew right from the begining it would not come during my break -- I knew with my luck it would come just as I started work -- so if anyone starts the blame game you can point to me and my rotten luck ; )

@ GregS

I'll second that emotion.

Nice one to all involved .. I know JurassicC has been working hard on it.

Now I can install that brand new 160gb hard drive I just bought. (Yeah, It WAS a 120gb .. But i used that in the machine I just built my daughter, So when I decided to order a new HD I spent the extra tenner to get 40gb larger drive ... Hey, I heard Os4 had bloated a little bit !! )
