It's really old news that I reported in Februrary. Cloanto withdrew its 3 euiipo objections to Hyperion's filings. The trademarks were registered a few days later.

I wonder if now we will also see a new re-release of the KS 1.3 on disk?
For the classic school A1000 users.

And how about WB 3.X - that was only included in the AF DVD.

"a free copy of Amiga Workbench 1.3.3 is included in the package"

You really should read the pages pointed to before asking something like that, old man.

And I'm sure you can figure out how to get it onto a boot floppy.

All this contention, I told you all months ago it was going to fall this way.
Again, Hyperion has an exclusive license to develop from OS3.1.

V40.43 is just a clean up of earlier versions of 3.1.

It doesn't appear that Hyperion's release or Cloanto's release of "3.X" are in conflict either as Cloanto has the right to distribute legacy versions of OS3.1 and has also taken the steps to secure licenses to many of the modules from 3.5 and 3.9 as well.

Of the two, I'm not sure which I'd pick, Hyperion's new revision of 3.1 does seem to be solid, but Cloanto's 3.X has some components Hyperion's OS is missing.

How this sorts out is anyone's guess, but having new options isn't a bad thing.

I was asking about Kickstart not Workbench. Particularly for A1000 users.

The current set of 2 disks from Cloanto only includes WB 1.3 + Extras and it is for users that have KS 1.3 in ROM.

The "pages pointed to" make no mention of a re-release of KS 1.3 on diskette.

If I was Cloanto, I would just drop the everything Amiga and move on. After twenty odd years, Hyperion are now aiming at screwing over the 68k Amiga community as well.

And all this due to what? Apollo Core?

@kolla

We can revert your sentence:
We needed the Apollo core to wake up Hyperion to restart development on something had unused for years.

I don't understand the fuss.
At this point, someone could black-box 3.1 and release a 3.1 clone and call it a 3.1 clone and it would be legal.

This is essentially what AROS did and really it's only fault is poor 68K compilers which you'd think would have been solved by now... (http://microcontrollershop.com/crossware_68k_c_spec.php?NONSSL)

So essentially, Cloanto and Hyperion are arguing over a name. A dead name.
If I was Cloanto, I'd release CloantoOS 1.0 and label it an Amiga 3.1 clone or compatible.
At least then we could support an OS with a real company behind it.

@Lou

EULA might prohibit mixing files, but as many have done without any issues, is simply to create upgrade packages.

Except this was not initiated by Hyperion, at all, Hyperion is just in it for the drama.

I don't think that's Cloanto's motive, at all.
If I remember Michele's words correctly, they do it for historical reasons, they want to preserve the beauty of the Amiga and it's place in the history of computing.

The intention for the "advances" in the "3.1"-line where just to make it a much more stable product, to simplify the use with more modern storage devices and the integration in the emulation environment.

That's how I interpreted cloanto's statements anyway.

@Amigo1

I doubt either company considers the OS to be a competitive product in the modern world.
And an FPGA enhancement of the 68K isn't going to enhance that competitive stance for anyone outside of the hobbyist community.

For that matter, anyone thinking there's a real future in NG OS' is kidding themselves as well.

That boat sailed at least 15 years ago.

This is, and will remain a splintered group of hobbyists, attempting to improve on a dead platform.

So who cares if both Hyperion and Cloanto both try to polish Amiga OS3...whatever?
Just us, no one else is paying attention.

Sorry, yes they sell kickstart 3.1 (40.72) which isn't compatible with the A1000, but they include a copy of kickstart 1.3 with that as well.

I fully agree with your assumption.

No, probably not for anyone in the major markets, but there might or might not be some niche application even outside this community, at least until they all have migrated to a contemporary platform.

Oh well, predicting the future I find so difficult these days..

That boat sailed at least 15 years ago.

From my point of view it started to go rapidly downwards when they announced AmigaOS as an HobbyOS. The image I have in my head of the community at that moment, is the same I have of what happens when smearing my finger with a wee bit of dish soap and observing the reaction in a glass of water when touching the pepper powder sprinkled water surface..

That's when I think it's lost its momentum and the funds for faster development became more scarce.

However, I still think there is a little market until we stay. And more people could be attracted if the right person/s take/s the rains.
Many, if not most people buy stuff only because "it's cool, it's the hype of the moment, everyone has it", so there might be "hope" for increasing the user base.

Quote:

I used to have a different opinion on this, but nowadays I don't see MorphOS, AmigaOS and, why not, ex-AmigaResearchOperatingSystem reunite to form a stronger developer base.
In such a tiny "market" I don't see competition to be beneficial or help productivity at all.

Sadly, this seems to be the case ATM.

I do have to say, I enjoy my NG machines. When I go "back" to the classic machines, I realise what a better experience AmigaOS4 is in comparison (on a NG machine). Even in a fast emulation environment neither OS3.9 with all the patches nor 3.X can not come close to it.
And I still find some task easier to fulfil with AmigaOS and it's applications than with the apps on the contemporary major 3 OSes.
But that is probably just me or us..

Really? What is so different today than... 15 years ago? And what will be different 5 years from now? Not much.
