Why would anyone bother upgrading AmigaOS 3.1 for profit when AmigaOS 3.9 is still available to buy and is perfectly servicable for 'retro' use?
https://www.vesalia.de/e_os39.htm
I honestly don't understand why this is considered a sales opportunity!
AmigaOS 4.x IS an upgrade but OS3.1.4 is a stepping stone to what? A clean codebase? Some bug fixes for some already diabolical print drivers when compared to TurboPrint?
IMHO Coffin/OS has made it irrelevant to the only feasible growth area i.e. Vampire purchasers! Buy a copy of AmigaOS 3.9 (so that you have legal license) and dowload Coffin/OS and the jobs a good 'un IMHO! _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." Agreed, however, they've done plenty to warrant the version bump from 3.9 to 3.10/3.X

Now that they own the whole kit and caboodle, perhaps they can/will work with more developers and/or AEON for further improvements... |

Well AmigaOS3.1.4 is about getting a updated cd filesystem, and lots of fixed to support long filenames in lots of modules, in theory AmigaOS3.1.4 should be more stable and less buggy then Kickstart 3.1 with H&P patches (AmigaOS3.9).
Diskdoctor update was probably not so necessary s most people use PFS or SFS anyway.
But I guess the biggest improvement is just having it in ROM, so you do need to reboot 5 times to install all patched before loading workbench.
My biggest complaint, about OS3.1.4 is that did not include large file support, as that might have been great to have common standard API for reading and writing files, and it be great for classic users to be able to back up now where large partitions on DVD's , but you can't write cd image files as be too large for file system to handle. I think in WinUAE (or as it called by some AmigaForever) , the use of AmigaOS3.1.4 makes little sense as the emulator patched the filesystem to provide direct access to the host operating system. and so large disk support was there provided with WinUAE, but WinUAE is a useless product for real Amiga computers, and is not in public interest to depend on emulation that can't be used on real hardware. I ponder if Micro Soft could sue itself because after the release of Win Dows 10 the sales for Wind Owls 8 "illogically" fell..
This poor guy R. S. Martinez... I wonder if after a hard day work he goes home, fires up his Amiga and plays Metal Law. Or Outlaw when he feels depressed.. |

The only growth area for Classics is the Vampire, so I repeat;
Why is AmigaOS3.1.4 better than Coffin/OS on a Vampire?
I am not even going to attempt to install in an an old and secure AmigaOS 3.9 Classic 'Miggy setup so the only REAL use will be on a new Vampire V4 standalone and then I'll probably use Coffin/OS as will everyone else (because it's built for the Vampire)!
... so really AmigaOS 3.1.4 is a solution to no particular problem other than to give Thomas satisfaction cleaning up the codebase and giving Hyperion a financial lifeline IMHO!_________________ "Art challenges technology. Maybe because in his examination of "irreparable harm" the Court did not distinguish between irreparable harm in the general business sense and irreparable harm as defined in a niche segment like the Amiga environment.

"Boing Ball Branch" vs. "Checkmark Branch".
Two completely different products, for completely different hardware, targeting different customers looking to fulfill different needs for different reasons. |

So what is the 'Checkmark branch' for unless to appeal to new Vampire owners? Why anyone would want to upset the apple cart regarding their fully tweaked and stable OS 3.9 partitions by installing OS 3.1.4 just because the forced reboot on start up is a bit annoying is beyond me. Hence, I repeat again;
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AMIGAOS 3.1.4 OVER COFFIN/OS WHEN CHOOSING AN OS FOR THE VAMPIRE BOARDS?Last edited by BigD on 05-Apr-2019 at 10:31 AM.

Wahat the hell is Coffin/OS. ? |
It seems to be a Apollo Core implementation of OS3.9. As long as you own the OS3.9 CD-Rom I can't see how it's not legit. It is not entirely clear that OS3.1.4 is legit considering the ongoing court case with Cloanto. At least we know that owning and using OS3.9 is ok.
... ok may be OS3.1.4 is more legit than originally thought

If it contains OS files then it's not legit regardless of whether the end user owns those files by some other means.
Amikit, for example, does not contain any OS files and during installation it will prompt you for a legal source such as an Amiga Forever disc. |

Fine, so can I take it that no one here is willing to compare the performance or features of the two OSes on the Vampire because they wouldn't want to admit to using a shady Coffin/OS product? _________________ "Art challenges technology. Wouldn't the ROMs / ADFs from your own Amiga be a legal source? |
