According to this discussion on Amiganews.it, user TLOSM found many bugs and issues on X5000 that make experience of use on the new machine, despite its nominal speed and power, as very limited and troublesome.

X5000 DDR3 RAM 1333MHz performances are inferior to an old Apple G5 DDR2 667 MHz, and X5000 stops at transfer rate of 2GB per second in read while decreasing even to 1.5 GBpS in write, a performance that could be appreciated on an Intel P4 of 2001, while G5 is capable of 7GBpS r/w that rise to 9GBpS when using ALTIVEC...

Also dramatic is situation of BUS DMA and it can't handle more of 3,5GB of RAM, limiting to 512MB the size of memory available on graphic cards.
But if dual 256MB graphic cards are mounted on two different PCI/PCIE slots, there were problems of instability.

Performances of bus PCIE on X5000 are inferior to even an AGP bus and similar to a Cyberstorm A4000,

Internal LANs are set to dummy, due to problems in DMA. L3 cache is used only for caching lan packets, and UBOOT version is stucked at 2014 because nobody wants to pay for a new version.

Well-tried, well-known, proven Mainstream Hardware was the route The MorphOS Team took. That brought us extremely low cost and high quality hardware in many shapes and forms, ranging from the tiny footprint Mac Mini, to various Big Box G4/G5 Desktops, to many different models of Laptop computers.

The MorphOS Team totally made the right decision back then, and thanks to this, all MorphOS users has been able to enjoy a very low cost but high quality Amiga experience, with Peak PPC Performance, in other words, the very best the PPC era had to offer. Since 2009, the MorphOS users has been able to enjoy an ever growing list of supported systems, today more than 80 systems are supported (and the list continues to grow). The Laptops was very appreciated by many. The rich flora of supported systems contributed (no doubt!) to the expanding growth rate of MorphOS Licenses sold. 😎

So again, thank you, The MorphOS Team, for making the right decision back then, despite being mocked and taunted by some trolls on this site, constantly playing out the "but it's second hand, not new" card. Your decision meant a lot of positive things to a lot of Amigans! 🙂

Low cost, proven second hand mainstream machines can very well be a good option to extreme-priced, unknown, unproven new machines made only in extremely low volumes. And then, when you introduced support for both the AmigaOne 500 and the AmigaOne X5000 as well(!!!), then all the FUD-arguments against the MorphOS H/W support situation from back then kind of falls flat to the ground!



So again, thank you for doing the right thing!

sounds like the kind of problems the amigaone series and os4 hardware in general has been always plagued with. i came across some comparisons and comments with the vampire solution just lately:

i have better ram performances in "qemu x5000" totally emulated on an i7 (2012) exactly the double than the real x5000/20.

I don't know what are the causes of these issues, if they are due to wrong initializing and running the hardware, if perhaps AmigaOS has so deep legacies that collide with new hardware performances or if X5000 is badly designed... We should check carefully what's happening with tlosm benchmarks.

And perhaps do MorphOS initialize and make ancient Apple Hardware running at its best, or does it presents bottlenecks too?

Has it been removed in MorphOS that annoying Amiga legacy issue that prevents using Graphic Cards with memory more of 128MB?

this because ram and gpu on x5000 are slow compared g5.
x5000 /20 go at max at 2 Gb/s quad g5 run min at 7 G/bs
x5000 gpu run at max at 4x on g5 at 16x

same test i did on audio video, games overall desktop experience.... x5000 is slower compared the old 2005 970MP... but the strange is integer are better on P50xx but where integer are needed (check the emulators) 970MP beat x5000.
this are simtoms of slow ram and slow video bus if the emulator use fast write/read the gpu vram

after 2 years scott wood release the kernel fix.... and leave freescale/nxp :P
but it is a fix in the dts,dtsi or in dtb?

I think you misunderstood something here.

MorphOS fails to use the 2nd 128MB bank on most Radeon 9250s (some may have only 1 256MB bank and should work).

Using 256MB on a Radeon 9650 or higher ain't a problem.

amigaos experience is the best.
x5000/20 and more the x5000/40 are the fastest amigang ever made.
i sign the nda for x5000/20 and dont sign the nda of x5000/40.
Like i been say and will continue write : hyperion guys did his job right, do the best and continue made the best, but cant do miracles if issue come because the bad hw.


why i write about linux because is the os that make me understand performances on different powerpc machine. and i can say that x5000/40 and more x5000/20 cant compete for nothing with my G5 quad in ram performance, in video performances and in desktop user experience.... and this is strange because the integer on P50xx are much more stronger than the G5.

as i say, x5000 gave the feeling of a ferrari on a country road.



i dont compare with pegasos2 ...
but my pegasos2 was a great machine i can say the best ng that i had.
pegasos 2 dont prize like an x5000

I forget to write the varisys cirrus was born as a linux machine, amigaos is a guest

Qemu dont use the fpu on the host for qemu doom on x86 just the integer was use for the qemu for emulate the fpu too

i use same disk image of aros and of windows 98 on both machine
or use qemu-ppc for osx ... performances on x5000 are much slower everyware
same is if i use sheepshaver with emulated cpu.

If I understand correctly, you emulate x86 via QEMU on both PowerMac G5 and X5000? Are you sure QEMU is not more optimized on G5? If you mean classic Doom, 2D GFX can be bottleneck, but this is emulation problem - Doom certainly is not good benchmark for VRAM speed. I would start with simple benchmarks (eg. dnetc for integer and lame for FPU), then you can try some RAM speed intensive application (eg. MPlayer benchmark with and without video output) to see where really is bottleneck. Do you have some 3D support in QEMU/x86?

there are not altivec optimization for qemu and when the guest cpu is emulated.
the altivec run if i use paravirtualization but paravirtualization work only in kvm.
kvm dont work on emulated cpu .
Aros x86 is much more faster on qemu on g5 quad than x5000
Be sure the x5000/20 ram transfer is not faster than 2 gb/s . tested with stream on both machine.
X5000 have the P4 ddr 400 ram performances and the slow ram performance you can touch when use the same program on G5 and on X5000 ... switch from the x5000 to g5 you have the same feeling when you use at same time an amiga 030 and switch on amiga with 060 (as an example)

Again, slower RAM wouldn´t affect (much) classic Doom. As I wrote, I bet GFX emulation is the real bottleneck (and would be most visible part of user experienced "slowness").
