Yes, some thing should be hidden from users - as in OS X. Linux UI crashy - I never get crash of linux UI. Maybe problem with configuration. Configuration in Linux should be done better.

Since this topic seems to pop up every other week on this forum, primarily due to lack of publicly-released news from A-EON and Hyperion, I thought I'd add my two cents.
I like things as they are. Seriously.
I enjoy AmigaOS as it is on PPC, and I love the hardware that A-EON produces. I love the ability to use modern graphics cards, and I like the software I already use. The only major things I really want are a better browser, LibreOffice, and faster hardware. That's it.
Perhaps this is due to my already being satisfied with other platforms for work purposes, or because I'm a beta tester I know who is doing what for the future, not sure. But I don't want AmigaOS on top of Linux. I don't want just another PC. And I don't want to chase after every technology trend. I want a really fun, unusual computer for home use, and for that purpose, my X5000 serves me rather well.
That said I'm very keen to try MOS on x64 for some reason.

"Linux UI crashy - I never get crash of linux UI."
I used Linux as main OS on my x86 computers from about y2005 to aroun y2013. During that time I was a linux fan and advocate.
But those Linux intallations (ubuntu) simply broke themself in automatic update processes.
Then it simply became impossible to find a distro that is stable on my old or new x86/A64 machines (ubuntu, mint, slitaz, bodhi, etc). Typically they break in a few days of use. (asus MBs+ asus Geforce GPU card, AMD CPUs) ((+ Radeon need always to be replaced with Nvidia to be able to set up a Linux PC, eg. none of the NorthBridge integrated AMD GPU's worked with any linux))
Puppy linux seems most reliable of them all, but that is too crappy to use without extra work.
I get new system from shop & install linux, it seem to work ok for a few hours or days, then it starts crashing daily and usually needs re-installation. (most typically GUI becomes jammed and system needs to be shut down from command line or via hard off, also very typically system fails to shut down. +Sleep has never worked on linux, after wake up GPUs fail to work properly.)
Recent annoyance is that everything need to be "killed" if not used, so that memory leaks do not kill the SSD because of swapping. (Linux and Windows is equal in that, LOL!) More safe to power off, but that darn boot up wait is minute(s) on all devices.
Perhaps other Linux users only use the command line. That is not enough for me. I quit using command line in 1987/1988.
**********some rant************ Last time I installed Linux, it was in 2018. On my AMD FX4300 system. Thought that it could work as Steam server. But steam was very crappy on it, 1/4 of the performance of the same game (eg. Rocket League) on windows on the same HW. And if firefox was left on, it ate all RAM+SWAP in a few days. (and after reboot GUI was broken, no icon loading etc.etc.) etc. I had to admit defeat after >decade of Linux.
(On Windows I've now noticed Steam does the similar memory leak as ff on Linux. If it is left lurking in the background, it consume all RAM+SWAP in a few days. And at work there is a standardized issue on all our i5 HP workstations: windows maintenance leaks memory and within one week RAM+SWAP is full (memory would seem to leak in kernel space as not any process is shown to use it all). i3 machines are ok. But i5 & 3Ghz is minimum for USB2.0 to work without any data loss.) Last edited by KimmoK on 16-Dec-2019 at 02:57 PM. Last edited by KimmoK on 16-Dec-2019 at 02:37 PM. | I've been using a Linux distro (specifically, Xubuntu, first 32 bit then 64 bit versions) as my main home OS for more than 10 years, its GUI has steadily improved.
It's still no Windows as far as user-friendliness goes, but the system itself is very stable and with far less utter nonsense like, you know, the registry.
For the gaming PC instead Windows is basically still a must, but even there things are FAR better than they once were.
I still miss the Amiga though. |

Microsoft is more and more integrating unix components and open sourcing Windows parts
It is not "the evil" anymore, they redefined the business model as cloud supplier and not primary based on selling windows and office |

Oh yes, I've somewhat followed them changing over all those years, but I don't think Windows is going to cease existing as we know it anytime soon (if ever) Last edited by Turrican3 on 16-Dec-2019 at 06:57 PM.

You must be doing it wrong.
I've been using Linux on a regular basis since August 31, 1998, and I started using it as my main system in October 1999. I've had *one* kernel panic in all that time, and that was on a new install where something went wrong (Redhat 9, as I recall). I've had occasional problems with the X server, but that's not been much trouble lately.
If you're having stability problems, it might be hardware that Linux doesn't "like". Linux hardware support is good, but it's not as good as Windows (as far as I know).
By way of comparison, I used to run Workbench 1.0 on an A1000, and if I could make it an hour without crashing, I thought that was pretty good!
@outlawal2
I don't think "Windows on Linux" is very likely, but I wouldn't be completely surprised by that either.

| Microsoft are doing more and more software for Linux, latest being Teams, which was announced as the first (of many) o365 component to be ported to Linux. Microsoft already use Linux for Azure Sphere OS, all the “young kids” they hire these days come with tons of Linux skills, Microsoft are contributing to the Linux kernel... Microsoft is a business and developing an OS when there are adequate free alternatives around makes less and less sense, the windows APIs are well defined, the UI layer and software portfolio can with relatively little work be OS kernel agnostic. Windows UI for posix (Linux) certainly has business potential, so why not. _________________ B5D6A1D019D5D45BCC56F4782AC220D8B3E2A6CC |

Right and Linux has how much of the market compared to Microsoft?
Give me a freaking break! Of course Microsoft is going to play nice with Linux so they can incorporate Linux features INTO Windows, but if you think they are going to give up their market lead because a handful of people prefer Linux you are delusional.
Windows is the dominant OS and is going to stay that way regardless of the Linux fanatics that have been saying that Linux is going to take over for 40 years.
It isn't going to happen any more than Amiga OS taking over.

For 40 years? That would require time travel, since Linux did not appear until 1991._________________ "Unix is supposed to fix that." -- Jay Miner |
