Even though I already own an X5000 Im hopeful that a shipping date will be announced for A1222. A low cost OS 4.1 machine could hopefully get more modern software for AmigaOS developed.

@Thread

Just trying to process some of the ExecSG and Tabor news.

Is this right?

1) Multicore support is progressing but as always a large proportion of Amiga software bangs the metal and breaks when the mode is enabled!

2) The Tabor has a working sound driver!!!

3) It is hard shipping 1000 custom made boards and the Tabor prototypes are built and the early adopter run has started? Im not really clear on this one.

4) Main problem with Tabor seems to be OS4 libraries not being tweaked for good fpu emulation on SPE! Work continues.

5) No news on final Tabor case choice or eta on batch 1 after early adopters get theirs

Other than that Metrosiege is looking like a great game for the Classic miggy.

@BigD

Bang the metal mean applications hitting the custom chips directly.
The problem is with applications using private data structures, in essence not following Commodore guidelines.
The board is not named Tabor anymore but A1222 plus.

@BigD I like optimistic people. Have you seen this:

https://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=74848.msg850242#msg850242

It seems there isnt even a prototype for the new revision. So, is there a sound driver? I dont know. 1000 boards? Atm we are talking about the first ~100 boards. And who should do they driver? A-EON or Hyperion? Mathew said something not to confident about the Hyperion development. Kernel and OS in different hands? Where should this end.

You gave em until Q2/20, didnt you? It seems that they made an offer for pre-order when thy didnt even had a prototype. So I cannot believe the Corona excuse. Sorry.

And they should been able to produce 100 boards even in this hard times.

But thats IMHO.

@LarsB

I commissioned Lyle Hazlewood to produce the A1222 Plus Sound Driver for us and he has just completed bulk of the work. We now have working sound which is great news. The Amiga Developer Team has been testing it for some weeks, a few bugs to iron out as you would expect but this is quite normal.

We have had the A1222 Plus Ethernet Driver finished for some time and it can be downloaded on Updater utility

All of these items will be on the Enhancer Software 2 which will be bundled with the A1222 Plus.

Banging the metal refers to bypassing OS functions and programming the chip registers directly. Most OS4.x capable hardware doesn't have the Amiga chipsets anyway and anything that closes the OS and takes control of the system won't work on BPPC and CSPPC equipped systems won't work anyway. That why classic users dual boot for their systems for WHDLoad and non RTG apps that don't play well with mode promotion.

Good news that Lyle back working on Amiga projects after taking break.

It would certainly make sense to produce more than 100 in the first run so there is no delay between the last EA board being shiped and the A1222+ going on general sale. It also spreads production setup costs too.

It's only an issue with heavy use of FPU code and it's yet to be seen what real world impact this has on the majority of software.

I still fail to see why you think the choice of case is particularly important. I'm sure they will seek the best balance between style and cost and there's no point announcing one now when something better might be on the market by the time the manufacturer sends the first shipment to A-EON.

I hope this is the case, since it seems like all other outstanding issues with the A1222 have been addressed. My interest at this point is lukewarm, but maybe it will revive when systems start shipping and reviews start coming in.

Thanks. Looks like another version of the same video link. It started working a few hours ago but before then was 8 hours of one image.

No, not exactly, it's the infamous Forbid()/Permit() methodology. These two functions, which were common in the 68K days, have now been considered taboo for a very long time. Perhaps almost 20 years since it was mentioned in a Heinz Wrobel document IIRC, where he warned to STAY AWAY FROM THEM, then said sometihng about not understanding semantics.

The problem is, these functions disable and enable multitasking. Yes that's right, it seemed like a good idea at the time, but any program you run on AmigaOS is given full control and can totally disable multiasking and run in god mode. Well, in fact Disable()/Enable() would give surpreme power, because they disable and enable OS interrupts, and disabling interrupts has the side effect of also disabling multitasking.

These functions are needed as a result of a design flaw in the AmigaOS design. It's rather too public about system structures and lets programs poke around. Even the functions that exist to access system lists and objects are generally given with the caveat that you disable multiasking during your access routine. They really should have been isolated to closed system functions where it could internally manage data locks how it liked.

There's some other examples where it's a common method to disable multitasking and in some uses it must be done regardless to protect sensitive data. But, unless it's a system object, killing the system temporarily is overkill. Sometimes it's just data between some processes so nothing else really needs to be disabled apart from them and whatever else passes in between.

Now, when it comes to multicore, this is problematic because all tasks on all cores must be suspended. Only one program on on core can do the work. The rest need to be held up. Because two cores can't access the same memory simultaneously or there would be cross corruption. It needs to be, to use a popular term, thread safe. The data needs to be locked out while one program on one core does its work and finishes cleanly without interuption. That's it in a nutshell and there would be some details I've missed. But I've tried to keep it simple.

Now, I noticed you made a point about the Tabor a few times, so thought I would point out that they aren't calling it the Tabor no more because it hurts so bad so much now.

That being said as theyre OS fonctions the ExecSG team can modify them so multi core could work.

Both the working Ethernet driver and Sound driver will be distrbuted on the Enhancer Software CD bundled with each A1222 Plus. Updates are delivered by our Updater utility which is included in the Enhancer Software

Beta testers have used USB ethernet drivers up until the point that our Amiga Developer Team member, Rene Olsen completed the ethernet driver.
