Funny how there had already been a 3.9 so if Hyperion is the official path after Commodore and Amiga Technologies how can the number system be going backwards? Sounds like 3.5 and 3.9 are trying to get written out of the history books. How about 3.9FE??

@BigD

If you pray and things go your way I guess that's proof that god exists, if things don't go your way, I guess it's god's will "thy will be done".

You are a good sport BigD and although I poke fun at the god stuff, Amigaworld would be poorer without you.

Ben Hermans is back I see, feeding scraps to the faithful (no pun intended).

This is brilliant news. 36 years of support. That is pretty amazing. What is the most powerful browser available now for 68k?

The most modern browser for the 68k Amiga is NetSurf which uses Reaction, a new feature added to AmigaOS 3.2. It would be interesting to hear how well NetSurf works with AmigaOS 3.2 Reaction as development would be easier with better compatibility to the AmigaOS 4 Reaction.

Reaction began life on AmigaOS 3.5. What is 3.2? Never heard of it until this Hyperion abomination was announced.

Close, though praying to God is only advised if you're already pretty sure he is there rather than trying to test him to 'prove' that he exists. His ways are higher than our ways and he works all things for good so who are we to moan and groan when specific details of our lives don't go the way we thought that they should/would? I mentioned answered prayer as a way God communicates but answers can be 'no' as well as 'yes' and 'no' is still an answer! It's definitely not silence and I guess it is similar to this thread in the sense that I knew someone was listening to me communicating about my thoughts about the availability of the AmigaOS 3.2 CD even if no one particularly wanted to tell me where I could buy it right away. Sometimes the answer is 'wait'!

The question of the hour is will BigD upgrade after all these years?! Inquiring minds want to know! Someone said Franko is watching and judging worthiness!

When you put your back into rolling that big boulder up the hill, progress may look like it involves going backwards. But the boulder is still moving up that hill...

@DiscreetFX

As previously stated; my friend might be gifting me an A1200 so since I think it has Kickstart3.0 I might as well consider AmigaOS 3.2 for a fresh start especially if all you have to do is copy the files off the CD to get a working partition!

Obviously compatibility with a Apollo Raptor Accelerator is a concern, as is lack of Dock vs OS3.9. The support for mounting ADF is a massive plus though!

@DiscreetFX

... as for upgrading my other Classics; why when they work great with OS3.9 and have no bugs that I notice day to day?

@Thread

This seems the cheapest option and with a photo of the official CD-Rom fills me with extra confidence you know what you’re buying.

@Thread

It’s not really a OS selling feature but the new Reaction based Show Config screen looks a lot better than the simple text output!

It wasn't possible to restart the development from 3.9 due to license reasons, hence work restarted from the 3.1 sources. That gave birth to 3.1.4 and 3.1.4.1, and 3.2 now. The numbers look odd, indeed. The internal version numbers have progressed, though:
* 3.9: V45
* 3.1.4: V46
* 3.2: V47 (I guess)

And yes, Kolla's tongue-in-cheek comment is true: 3.2 (V43) was supposed to be the Walker's OS.

If the development continues for a long time, there will be more collisions: 3.5 and V50 (4.0) already exist.

maybe when it reaches V50, it will just mean they have the same feature set?

Can't the versions numbers be the same, but platform specific (68k, PPC)?

Besides that, I doubt the 68k will develop to have the same feature set of OS4.1.. Somewhere it will stop and considered feature complete.

I mean, unless not until BigD will buy available hardware and software, in order for development money to become available.

I am still dreaming of "Vampire-style" expansion for the old classics which is not going to be bigger than the 68000.
Just take the 68k out, put the new magic in and the old 500 will have the same feature as modern computers, including Radeon Vega graphics performance. And USB4.0, Bluetooth 5.0 etc, etc..

Then we can all sing again: "Only Amiga..."

@BigD

It will add taxes and shipment fees..

I would consider waiting.. I heard development for AmigaOS 3.3 has already started. Does it make sense to spend money twice?

Besides you have to copy some libraries from OS3.9 to OS 3.2 because some software requests it.

I think you should stick with OS3.9 at least until 3.x is completely compatible to 3.9.

Also if you plan to buy it for the new A1200 you just got, remember it has the 3.0 ROM and it is a Commodore machine, this new OS is not coming from Commodore. It might brick your newly aquired A1200. And if you buy the CD, you will need a CD-ROM.

Also #2, I read in the FAQs that you can not simply copy the files over, it is more complicated than that.
I think Ben should have put a warning in the announcement for this. And also warn us, that you need a CD-ROM drive to install the CD-ROM version. It might seem obvious to most, but people returning to the Amiga after 20 years of so, might have forgotten.
Bad choice Ben!

@BigD

Absolutely agree!

I am now sitting here, biting my nails because I can not order the new AmigaOS3.2!!

Ben should really have done it like last time with AmigaOS 3.1.4, put the download option first,
and take the shitstorm from both users and Sellers, because the online option practically killed the sales for the Sellers!

@Ben You always screw up!
And Ben, you should also have.. ehm.. have.. done..ehm.. the ehm.. Oh yeah! btw why did you announce it before it was acutally on sale eh? And I... I was late to work this morning, because you put the announcement online at such daring hours!

NEXT TIME, ANNOUNCE AN ANNOUNCEMENT OF AN IMMINENT ANNOUNCEMENT AT LEAST 14 DAYS AHEAD OF ANNOUNCING IT!

I WAS LATE AT WORK, AND IT IS YOUR FAULT.. BEN..!

That would be quite a backwards constraint. Not wise (nor feasible).

It will be up to the developers to decide. Not something to waste time on now

@A1200

when Amiga Inc first sued Hyperion in 2005, they did this becouse Hyperion failed to deliver the product on time, but everything had changed, Hardware was not the same as first agreed, the scope of software development had change. this is why Hyperion and Amiga Inc could not agree on whether the price, moreover, had Amiga Inc gone bankrupt, in the meantime, the buyback contract, would prevent the development of the OS would stop if Amiga Inc went bankrupt. Amiga Inc did not have the money to pay for all the work that was agreed. this resulted in a settlement agreement.

When we talk about scope of software development, that also included having to remake components that Amiga Inc did not have, that included components Hggge & Partner wrote for AmigaOS3.9

http://obligement.free.fr/articles_traduction/itwbarthel_en.php

Hyperion Entertainment obtained the AmigaOS code around 2001. from Olaf Barthel, who had worked "Amiga Technologies GmbH" and "Haage & Partner GmbH"
