The most positive imho is that the development team has more prominent Amiga members then last year: Barthel, the Frieden Brothers, Sollie... what can go wrong now :)) |

I don't want to be "negative" but Carl Sassenrath was alone. |

Then again, presumably Carl was employed full time and paid correspondingly.

and he had the fortune to design from scratch without needing to work with a previous, heavily used implementation that was designed for one slow processor with no memory protection. |

While Carl designed the AmigaOS Exec kernel, saying he was "alone" seems to me like a slight to the rest of the Amiga software development team.

Carl was one of the brightest young OS design prospects in the world when he joined the Amiga. He left HP which was a very good job from a top computer company and he liked the job. He left for the Amiga not because of the money but because of the exciting technology and the freedom given to him to innovate.

Carl had to work with limited time and severe resource constraints for the most advanced multi-processor PC hardware of the day to be able to create one of the most advanced and likely first preemptive multitasking OSs for a PC up to that time. Since the AmigaOS was created, few OSs as dynamic and featured as the AmigaOS have been created using so few resources. Resource tracking was planned but was lost in the CAOS of development and time constraints. PC CPUs rarely had a large flat memory where a MMU could be used for memory protection and only came later (68030 had integrated MMU in 1987 but it was expensive for a PC).
It would have been much easier to add memory protection, process isolation and resource tracking to AmigaOS when porting to other architectures like PPC. The later developers which did the porting had many times more hardware resources and standard MMUs to work with. Surely they deserve more of the blame for the lack of these features in AmigaOS 4 (MorphOS and AROS too) than Carl. Their choice was better 68k compatibility rather than more advanced desktop features. The AmigaOS will be no more competitive against free OSs with larger user bases while breaking compatibility. Few OSs with a standard environment and as many features as the AmigaOS can compete with the 68k AmigaOS in footprint though.

Very interesting presentation, thanks for sharing.
I wonder how did you manage to talk about all 44 slides with only 30 mins available |
Thanks :) I got used to, and I had slightly more than 30 minutes for that :) I like to show some action on my slides and prefer such form than having 10 slides for 40 minutes of talk :)
Btw. Emu68 was not mature enough to show that on AmiWest, but now it is:
Playing mp3 on Emu68 and Pistorm, as well as decoding to an IFF file. Please note this is a non-fpu version: https://youtu.be/puPTJ0_VXgg

Let's not forget that they had no choice. They were commissioned to produce a 68k emulator to run OS3.1 on a PPC platform.

very interesting. Is Aros 68k also working on PiStorm + Emu68? |

Propably breaking compatibility would have make sense, on the other hand there are also exotic platforms out there with SMP and MP but still not more succcessful than the amiga platforms. Finally software "sells" hardware, the "content". If you have no exclusive software that justifies to use a platform it will fail. And it must be both exclusive and offering additional value to the user, not just recompiling of old software that is inferior to competing software. |
