| This coming Tuesday, February 1st 2022, marks the ten year anniversary of AmigaWorld.net member Skuggan announcing that "Spotify for the Amiga is a go". Since then, a decade has passed but no public releases of the immensely popular Danish streaming software have come to fruition. In this AmigaWorld.net Special Poll, you are kindly asked to approach the ballot box and voice your excitement or concerns about the project. As always, the AmigaWorld.net fora welcome further discussion on this potentially highly sensitive topic. Last edited by Petah on 29-Jan-2022 at 09:35 PM. Considering the user behind this idea last login was 2016 I guess the project is a no go. I do wonder what happened to the os4 machine they got in there office?
It was a nice idea and effort, I still wonder what’s happened to the OpenOffice kids port that was apparently up and running just like the libre office it got to beta and up and running in late 2017 supposedly https://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=72915.0

When this was originally announced, I was like 'meh'. I had never used Spotify at the time.
I started to use it a not long after and thought it would be cool if it came to the Amiga and I would use it. When it was quiet for a number of years I internally classified it as vaporware.

Hmm hmm Danish software? Spotify is as Swedish as Skuggan if you excuse! I mailed Spotify a couple of years ago and asked about the progress and the A1 that Skuggan donated, they said they would forward my question to the developers... ;)
Edit: Found the e-mail reply
Hejsan Dj Khayos,
Jonatan

Pointless poll. We knew it was dead in the water a long time ago. The Spotify developers had no experience programming the Amiga and simply dumping a system on them with no kind of support didn't work out. |

Thats not the whole truth! Skuggan hopefully may reply to this thread and explain what happened. I know part of what was the problem but I leave it to Skuggan. _________________

I was surprised that they not said no from beginning. It is not only that they would have to port the software to a exotic OS with only few users, they also have to update and support it and then the security issues. It was not a realistic idea at all. |

1) He knew some developer at Spotify, but decisions about which platforms companies like Spotify should support is not made by programmers but by executives. 2) The Spotify app is (like many other apps) heavily based on HTML and web browser technology. OS4 simply doesn’t have that. Nor does it have the DRM frameworks. |

1. You're partially right. Skuggan can give a better answear.
2. The developers Skuggan knew at Spotify thought it would be possible to do it on Amiga, then some other bad shit happened Last edited by khayoz on 30-Jan-2022 at 01:52 AM. Last edited by khayoz on 30-Jan-2022 at 01:51 AM. Last edited by khayoz on 30-Jan-2022 at 01:51 AM.

| @khayoz,
I remember this, It was because it is done with Flash and no one has been able to port it since that very early version.

| If they'd try to compile the Spotify application from PC, it might be out of the question. That app is so bloated and clumsy, that it feels like it's running over a browser engine. Or another option is that it's based on layers and layers of 3rd party components, which probably can't be compiled for Amiga.

it is not only outdated stack, security today is a big concern. Amiga is basically a system from pre-internet time. That nobody hacks it is simply because there are no users. If I would have a professional application with millions of users I would certainly not even think about supporting it. Nothing against amiga, it is a nice and fun playground for me but here we talk about big companies. In this context it would be too risky to me to support it. My only explanation why they not refused to when they started the talk that they had no clue about the current situation and the current OS with its weaknesses. |

Other operating system like Linux, and windows, comes with lot of pre-installed network services, like file sharing, Domaine name, ftp servs, http servers, remote SSH and telenet. and so on, this allows more vectors of attack from the outside.
Every OS has security holes, and every program you install can have back doors, the OS your using is irrelevant in this regard. I can imagine most encryption keys are stored in ~\home or %ApplicationData% or register on window. Its not hard to obtain this security codes, nor is hard to duplicate the ApplicationData, if you copy some cookies and logins from there password manages, you can get into a lot places you should not, Pressures images and documents are mostly stored on user level privilege, not administrator privilege, in and of the day security depends on users, downloading applications, with correct moral compass.
sure, security levels, limits some of what a program can do, but take a port scanner for example does not require, high security level. The biggest concern these days what happens out side your computers, like fake DHCP servers, fake DNS servers, or Proxy servers, and VPN’s can be used to monitor traffic from a to b, or b to a.
Security in web pages can also be issue, regarding Javascript injections, melissas plugins.
Regarding SSL on Amiga, we program that are statically compiled, and we programs that use OpenSSL.library patching OpenSSL.library is easy, but if starkly compiled it’s not that simple.

As I recall, they gave up the app development, because there’s a web player now. _________________ Sometimes we give people a lot of credit just because they’re writing nice sentences even if it isn’t adding up to much. |
