DigitalDisaster is right. Supposedly, OpenOffice 2 will have a more lean codebase since the goal for OO.o 2 was to remove the unwanted stuff and improve features while adding others. So if anyone decides to go for this effort, set your sights on an OpenOffice 2 port.

I cannot vote.

I am a programmer with no time and no OS4 ATM, and no money to contribute (as I am saving to buy an a1), but I really would like to contribute anyway...

Do we need a "unicode.library" for this project (or any other project) ?

I ask this because started (since last week ) to dig into the Unicode specs in order to write a simple (OS3 ) library system that handles charsets conversions and simple 32bits-chars string manipulation.

(may be expanded to support Unicode normalisation and Unicode Collation Algorythm, etc. when it's done, but there is enough work with charsets for now).

I am looking for motivation to continue/start this project. If there is a need, I may start it for real.

Ok I am a bit off topic now...

@EntilZha

I'm about to start my dissertation and I have another project running on the side, but I'll be glad to help out with whatever I can (which would mainly be documentation/QA and the like).

@EntilZha

Unfortunately i don't have the programming experience, Id however be prepared to donate as generously as i could each month towards this project...
I think if such a project gets off the ground it might be a good idea for the AW.net team to give it a prominent place on the front page to help keep the momentum going... Good luck...

How come that SkyOS guy has got all these ports going?
He's got Firefox, OpenOffice, The Gimp etc etc
- The SkyOS community must be way smaller than the current Amiga, surely.

Bty - I would vote yes and could help with documentation, testing and easypeasy but mind numbingly dull coding as well as the odd bounty donation.

@Colin_Camper

Robert Szeleney single handedly codes almost all of SkyOS adn the ports (There are a couple of other developers taht do graphics work etc.)
I would guess that the main reson Robert has so many working ports si that he designed the system and so has good knowledge of it and can change bits anytime he wants. The fact that is meant to be very posix complient probably helps as well.
Note the SkyOS Mozilla ports are native but GIMp, GAIM and Abiword etc. run using the SkyOS GTK port. Also, SkyOS doesn't have OOo

@EntilZha

I can put cash towards a bounty, and any ideas which need bouncing off end-users can come my way. Also, I should be able to do some beta testing.

@Rogue

Voted for admin duty.

I use OOo a lot with Windows and Linux. Can therefore do some serious betatesting. You can whistle for Bounties (can't abide them) but I might just see my way to a Toblerone or two

@EntilZha

Count me in. I don't have much spare time these days but I'd be willing to put in some effort porting various modules.

Cheers,
Bean.

What i really don't understand is all that people claiming to have voted NO 'cause they don't need OO... we must see this as selling point, and a big one, even if we don't use it! You can't just go to people tryin' to sell them a solution based on good but DEAD programs, wich not only aren't developed anymore (and don't work always well), but are quite difficult (if not impossible) to buy brand new.
How could people take us seriously if we're goin' to present them outdated solutions? Are you talkin' seriously? We need it as soon as possible!

ATM, i cannot help in any other way except the financial part... i too vote for a bounty system

@EntilZha

I'm willing to register and pay for a domain name and some webspace for a site with news on office software for developers/users. I can deal with up keep and admin. The site would focus on hosting tutorials on porting open office code, tutorials on getting the most out of existing amiga software, faqs, etc, rather than forums or raising a 'fund'.

Would anyone be willing to contribute? A nice generic html layout with news posting facility, place for tutorials and links would be a good, something like intuitionbase.org - if someone is willing to donate some such HTML I could quickly adapt would be good, don't really have time to do my own from scratch and my HTML skills are limited. Same goes for logo design etc... ....but can manage admin side no problem.

@EntilZha

BITbyBIT Software Group LLC votes "YES" to donate resources to this worthy project!

We have a existing server and domain which has been set a side for exactly this kind of
Open Source porting effort for AmigaOS4. It is located at www.bitbybitsoftwaregroup.org
and has 3000 MB of storage and 100 GB/Month of bandwidth available.
It can serve as web space, a CVS server location, and many other features.

I would like to contribute some direct programming time to this project as well,
but will focus on supporting AmigaOS4 Programmers first with projects like
the SDK Browser, and IDE tools to soon follow.

@EntilZha

I guess it's modular enough to do, say, port a library, test it, port another library, test that, port a working module with support for only those two libraries, test that etc ad nauseam?

I voted "Yes, but no time". I have SOME time, just not much. I would like to contribute, though. I have a couple of very fast lines I can host things with. 100Mbit at the student society and 4Mbit at home (these are both symmetrical). So mailing list (remember a1g3dev?), webspace and CVS (allthough I would STRONGLY suggest we begin by porting SVN instead. Once you try that there's NO going back, I promise) could be maintained by moi. Surfing from work on a 2Mbit is actually quite boring when you get used to fiber

So let me know, I can have openoffice-os4@samfundet.no up and running within 15 minutes, using mailman on a 100Mbit (think we're upgrading that to gigabit this year, but not sure when ).

I'll be doing some hardware later this year, at that time doing software in my spare time will probably be ok again (right now I get dizzy just thinking about programming, probably become allergic to pointers or something...). Other than that I can't say I'm very good with the AmigaOS API, I do all my programming in Linux... and I ALWAYS write either backends or WEB GUIs, I still haven't done a real GUI.

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.
