Hi all,

I had the misfortune to have to attend an MSDN Technical briefing about Visual Studio 2005\t M$ UK headquarters in Reading yesterday.

Just looked at the specs for a Virtual PC version of the development studio I had been given and I'm just shocked and horrified at the specs it requires to function........

2 ghz CPU
1.5 GB RAM
10 GB HD space

Wahahahahah!
There's no need for it!!!!

Even though I have an adequate processor, I only have half gig of memory!!!!

Bloody bloat!

And 2010 it's going to be

8 Ghz CPU
5 GB Ram
80 GB HD Space

Aye, but that includes Virtual PC doesn't it? That's a monster that requires a shedload of RAM and processing power to run effectively, especially if you've already got VS2005 running. VS2005 had enough features to sink a large cargo ship, so it's bound to take a bit of processing power and memory up.

Besides, it will run with less - it'll just be very very very slooooow.

@treblesix

I’m not really shock since I usually run two or three VS2003 (due to 3-tier model).

I tell you, you would kill to have something nearly as comparable to VS on Amiga as dev tool...

@treblesix

The only "big requirement" i see there is the 1.5GB ram, other than that a 2GHZ CPU for using a dev environment like vc into an emulated enviroment doesn't seem bloat to me, ofc everything is subjective.....

Aye, just think of the nice quick builds and compiles on a 2ghz cpu

@Hammer

Why do you need several instances of VS2003? Why not have several projects in one solution?

@All

Visual Studio 2005 is a HUGE improvement over previous versions(as is .Net 2.0). While the requirements seem high, you're VERY productive if you have a decent PC.

@VidarL

The Team Solution /reporting/deployment aspects do seem quite cool, and it does look powerful, but beta 2+3 are still a bit buggy atm.

I haven't tried the Team System stuff, I've only seen some demonstrations by Brian Goldfarb. The problem with the Team System versions is the price. ~$10,000 for a license for one of the editions is way to expensive for the company where I work.. And Microsoft only recommends using them on projects with more than 6-10 developers..

I think beta2 is pretty stable.. I'm finishing up an $80,000 application this week, and I've encountered few major bugs.

1.5GB a lot but that is only about £80 memory if you buy the crap stuff. Plus with the emulated environment you have it shared with at least two machines.

Still stuck on VS6 at the places I work! I've convinced them in principle to migrate, its just getting them to take the plunge on the next projects.

Yes, it's big and quite demanding.. BUT.. it has power. Yes, I've to admit, that this is one of best MS product. And I'm not much fan of MS. My friend, who's .NET developer, gave me demonstration of few things that can be done with VS, and I must say I'm impressed.

And let be honest: 2 Ghz CPU's are here, 10 Gb of HDD space is nothing (I have 2 spare disks, each ~80 Gb). RAM limit is quite high, but I bet it's just to avoid huge penalty kick.

While req. for Vista are silly, because Vista hardly brings something new, VS is very capable and I can say, it's not as shocking as Vista.

It's totally integrated with MS SQL 2005, which can only be a good thing.

You're familiar with running multiple instances of Visual Studio .NET 2003 for a 3-tier application. No surprises there! ✅
