| I am thinking, if one wishes to have a CD-ROM for their A1200 without the need of towering it, those external ones, can one actually use them with A1200 without getting those very expensive and hard to find special CD-ROM's designed only for the A1200?
Say those cheap external modern CD-ROMs that uses USB. Can that be used on a desktop A1200? |

I see no reason why it wouldn't work. You do need a SUBWAY A1200 USB controller though. |

It can be bought here for example. And here you can find information about installing it in a desktop A1200... |

There was never a CD rom designed for a A1200. Only standard CD Roms drives with external casings. CD Rom drives (there internal kind) are dirt cheep (in the broad scheme of things) and most importantly are pretty much sealed units, thus you can use them outside of a tower with little risk, and only cosmetic detriment.
You can surely pic up a cheep casing from some electronics hobby shop such as Maplins, if you must have one.
Also modern CD-R's and CD-RW will work pretty well on a A1200 as they have protection against the inevitable buffer underruns.
I have an external powersupply, external harddrive (internal one hidden inside an old CD case), and external CD-RW onmy A1200. The last recycled the case from an earlier one bought from eyetech some time ago. (That one still worked but was fussy about whixh CD-Rs it would recongise)

No, standard USB CD-ROM drives are not compatible with older models like the Apple IIGS without significant modifications or adapters. They require specific interface hardware to function correctly. |
