>I think the current model naming system is stupid.

I agree..

What about :

- Amiga XE G4 800
- Amiga XE 800
- Amiga NG 800+
- Troika Amiga G3 800
- Trio (?) Amiga NG 2000

Or something like that...

Now I'm interested! Can you tell me what sort of speed comparison was done? Is it because of memory or internal bus access speed, or the PPC CPU itself that makes a 600MHz machine "twice faster" than an 800MHz machine?

How would DV Player run on Samantha for example? Without the aid of any special additional hardware, just comparing Samantha against the uA1, would DV player seem to run faster with fewer frame drops?

I'm very curious to know!

Thanks,

Scott

@COBRA
Someone mentioned prices above, as 500 Euros for board, or 900Euros for complete system. He wasn't making the numbers up.

Thanks, but no thanks. I won't bite on your flame bait. What I
asked was a valid question. I've never ever worked on cars
even less with car computing. But I have seen many embedded
boards and they were all alot smaller than Mini-ITX. Hence my
question
.

You know, I ask questions when I want to know something..

@scabit

I think he referred to memory speed tests. The 440 core is actually a bit slower than a 750FX/GX at the same clock speed. There is also the L2 cache, which the 440EP does not have, however this will not be a problem for video playback in particular (because the video frames don't fit into the L2 cache of G3/G4 CPUs anyway). A uA1/800 can currently handle DVD playback with ~70% CPU usage using overlay, so there's a pretty good chance that the Samantha will also cope, even if the CPU is a bit slower, the faster RAM should balance that.

@wegster

Can you point me to that info please? Last time I heard a quote about pricing (from Soft3) it was an estimated 370-400 EUR for the first initial developer batch.

Flash currently has it's problems, yes. But you can be pretty sure that big, fast, reliable and cheap flashdrives will replace traditional harddrives in the future. Maybe not yet, but I'm quite sure technology will be ready for it within next 3-5 years.

Although those names are ok I still think they are too long...

These sound better:

Amiga 400
Amiga 440

are more in the Amiga style...

Of course, no clue if he's guessing, or knows anything the rest of us don't, so... *shrug* But that's what TMHG was using as pricing, I'd assume..

they have developed the board primarily for a customer to suit their specific needs

Well, I hope so. If they have existing customers (or existing orders/contracts) with a clear set of requirements, then of course they should take their money. Still won't help Amiga a lot though ... :-/

Quote:
but at the same time they can market the boards for the OS4 market with a slightly higher specced CPU.

My point was that the Amiga market needs something with *lower* specs, *lower* specced CPU, and *lower* price. My point was that *price* is key for getting OS4 out to the *masses*, and high specs (even "moderate" specs perhaps) *prevents* that.

IMHO everyone has a completely wrong focus. Most discussions here are about 7448 CPU's @ 1.7GHz. Some discussions are going even further, and pointing out that the 7448 is nothing compared to the latest top of the line x86 CPU's. Which is true, but not the point in an Amiga context. Why would you really want a 1.7GHz 7448 for AmigaOS, at least if you are a regular "joe-user"?

Amiga *runs fine* on extremely low performance gear. That's the strength, and where the focus should be. At least if you want a chance of spreading OS4 on a broad scale.

At 500 Euro, people might ask "What can this odd device without all the professional desktop applications really do for me that justifies this *investment*?". That question from an "outsider" could be quite difficult to answer. Who knows, "draggable Screens" might not quite cut it? At 100 Euro however, that question might not even come up, it could rather be "Yeah, Amiga, I think I remember that. Oh heck, I can spare 100 Euro this month just to try it out and see if I have a new hobby going, it's not like it's a big investment or anything".

No applications, no users.
No users, no developers.
No developers, no applications.

See the catch? You have got to start somewhere, you have got to break in somewhere. Is there a better place to start than throwing out Amiga (with the old but existing application base) at a price as low as possible, to as many users as possible?

Big community of creative people should be the goal, at least at this point, not high-priced devices with unnecessary specifications.

Quote:
So I wouldn't draw any conculsions about Samantha's pricing yet.

I'm merely basing any "assumptions" on post #33 in this thread (by K-L). That was the only information I had at hand.

Quote:
Besides, you really cannot go any lower spec. than the Samantha, except if your target market does not require good multimedia performance (audio/video decoding/encoding, etc.)

-"Hey Derfs? Yes, you! Do you understand now that there was a point in posting the links to all the videos in this post? This is a 5200 SoC processor that costs a few dollars only, on a motherboard that can be sold for less than a hundred dollars (including profit margins)! Only Amiga makes it possible!"

Quote:
Apart from that I agree with you that the Samantha with OS4 will have a limited market, maybe a few thousand max. No "outsider" will buy a 677MHz machine as a desktop machine, which runs an OS which has hardly any software available yet. It will also not attract too many developers to start producing lots of professional titles for OS4 like Adobe Photoshop. So it's only for us Amiga maniacs :)

Exactly!

And as I said, I will probably buy it too.

(But "Samanta" won't help Amiga in any way that a bare-minimum, ultra-low priced device could do. IMHO of course )

Operating systems:
Linux already runs on the board. Not on the one that was shown but on her sisters. This is how they did their speed tests.
The Trio said they want all operating systems on this board : MorphOS, AROS, Linux and of course OS4. If you want to port an OS, just ask them.
BTW, there are already 13 Linux distros that runs on the Yosemite board. So upgrading them to support Sam should be pretty easy.

Hmm, just a question - this doesn't happen to be related to this?

@COBRA

DVD playback on Samantha does not need to be handled by the CPU. The ATI chip has hardware decoding built in so it's essentially irrelevent as long as the software is updated to handle it. Other video files will be dependant on the CPU though,

@Thread

I now remember something else. The board has
ccTalk capabilities. I thought it was a connector but I can't find it. Maybe they are pins on the mobo.
Well, cctalk allows the board to control payment devices. This opens another market to Samantha. So it's another possibility to lower the price.

Amiga 400
Amiga 440

Hm, Amiga 440 sounds more like an Atari number (Amiga 500 / Atari 520) or an addon to an specific model ( A500 with A590)..

In the Amiga tradition we should stick a number to it so it's

AMIGA 400
