More wait would be a disaster. A lot of people have already jumped ship, probably more will follow if we have to wait much longer.
I guess we will see by X-Mas, we've been "promised" OS4 this year again... _________________ Common sense - So rare it's almost like a super power |

I seem to recall the "promise" included January '07 as well. I do hope we see it before Xmas. _________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

As expected, silly poll options.
You're making the assumoption it will takea year to port to PS3, which is in contrast to every indication on porting received from the Freidens.
And of course, 'I want it now' isn't relevant either, as there's nothing to run it on, unless Hyperion has an addition non Panda, non Amy'0-something, or Sam board in posession and ready to go.
There's also nothing wrong with release it on the first hw that doesn't suck, and then seeing a PS3 port, although once ported to PS3, I'd expect it to affect sales on other platforms...although the RAM limits of the PS3 aren't ideal, they could at least make it outside the fanboy market..

Maybe the poll should have been, which is more likely, OS4 on PS3 or on Amy'0-something??

yes, but this Xmas feels 'lucky,' right?
Shrug, I'll buy a PS3 regardless. Would be a nice bonus to run OS4 on it at some point. Enough so I might be willing to buy a second PS3 for it, even. I wouldn't buy two Pandas or PV-TLs, were either available for sale.

Agree, I have OS4 allready, so where is my option. "Allready got it! "
Though, as zerohero wrote, we need something now, at least a release to the BPPC/CSPPC, so OS4 gets some more users. _________________ Site admins are people too..pooff! |

Users, testers, developers, general work force, etc. Yes. Not to mention every day I hear tales of impatience that result in people spending thousands of dollars on other hw/sw, money that could have been spent in our community. Plain and simple, a larger market means greater chance of talking software developers into -considering- OS4.

We seem to have an abundance of users already, where are all the devs? This is supposed to be the developer pre-release of os4, yet when I look at OS4Depot uploads I only see one name, spotUP, where are all the rest?

| I would absolutely love to be able to buy into AOS4 now and get or build a machine, hell I already have 1 PowerPC box I was given that I cant make use of...
Im thinking along the lines of a "binary kernel module" approach with source based wrapper for non-official Hardware without any official support...
would this be feasible for Hyperion to work with? as a licensed copy of the binary module being on the AOS4 disc along with everything else would also force any other system-loader to be compliant to a minimal spec for handing AOS4 exec compatible drivers through anyway...
Ive seen the skeleton of the U-Boot sources on SourceForge.net... would it be too much to be able to buy AOS4 and then run it legally on any machine where I can make the kernel run with enough driver material to handle the hardware setup?
does the loader need to be part of the OS package? or a hardware device?
I know I can get Linux or BSD launched from "grub" as its own loader package, would it be too bad for a GPL edition U-Boot to be used with some means of loading the AmigaOS4 exec?
maybe use of say the BootBlock as a binary "translator" for the objects in the FileSystem from within the GPL U-Boot when compiled for a Mac iBook?
Im curious as to the legal aspects of such things and feasibility... not something Hyperion needs officially support...
maybe that would also be able to put to bed the "run on PPC mac" threads as well? as long as there is a legitimate path even though it may be 3rd party "LGPL" or similar materials to make the purchased software run?
Personally I am still looking towards making a CDTV case contain a slimline DVD MultiDrive and PPC mainboard with AOS4 as a MediaCenter embedded box

Yep.
Recent chain of thought- "Ahh well, still no new hardware, nor OS4 release. $2000+ spent, Macbook Pro. Bye, Panda $." Soon- "PS3 is out, still no OS4 hardware, buy PS3."
That's one case (mine, and done), but without both new users and devs, we're going nowhere.

| Enough of this waiting... get the bloody thing released, then worry about other platforms.
It's been WAY too long already. There's no way I'm going to select an option projecting 2008 and beyond. Potential 2007 is bad enough.

Just looking forward to a full release of the next version of AmigaOS. |

What about OS4 on a reworked ATX Panda by 1st quarter 2007 ?
If there is a definate all systems go for OS4 on the PS3 then i think any of the announced projects (Panda, Amy O5, SAM440) will have a hard time matching the price performance ratio for home (desktop) consumers.
But OS4 on a next generation console can't come with out a price. If the PS3 or XBOX 360 became the dominant platform for OS4 then why would you buy OS4 game titles when you can grab a PS3 / XBOX title ? All the latest titles are going to be available well before OS4 gets a sniff.
If it comes with built in linux, browser, media player then software development in these areas may suffer due to the inherent features there already.
It would be interesting to know if hyperion have gotten their hands on any of the JAP / US PS3's that are about at the moment. Last edited by JurassicC on 14-Nov-2006 at 12:19 PM.
