Hi I've been setting up my Amithlon system over the last two days...

Check out my screenshot at http://www.hd-zone.com/amithlon/amithlon.png

What do you think?

It's Amithlon running on
2 GHz Athlon XP mobile
1 gig of ram DDR 400
Nforce 2 motherboard
GeForce 3 GTS 64MB AGP
SoundBlaster Live! PCI
80 Gig UDMA 100 hard drive

I'm using VisualPrefs, Birdie, and Ken's OS4-light theme/icons... :)

The system is very stable and fast...fun to use!

Nice assembly. Kick your AMPlifier/AmigaAMP skin for e.g. http://vladstudio.powweb.com/downloads/vladstudio_sa1.zip and swap the background to one that fits your native resolution like this one (not for free, but very good quality) or that one. These are also very spectacular.

@HammerD

You removed your screenshot but I remember you had it running at 1680x1050, so you seem to use a 22" TFT. I ever wanted to run it on my 24" TFT but never got Picasso96Mode to adjust a right resolution like 1920x1200 or at least 1600x1200 with my old GeForce2. As I now have some GeForce FX5x00 for testing purposes I want to try it again. Can you share your settings with me how you got to the high resolution?

@Sprocki

HI Sprocki, I can give you the picasso96settings and screenmode prefs file and that should get you to 1680x1050...from there you could work your way up to 1920x1200 with picasso96mode....how does that sound?

@Sprocki

If you're trying for 1920x1200 make sure and use 16-bit colour. Only the first 8MB of video memory is available to P96 under Amithlon and a 32-bit 1920x1200 screen needs more than that, so it won't work.

1680x1050 is the native resolution of many popular 20" panels and even some up-market 17" ones, actually.

@Zardoz

I have put the screenshot back online for those of you who did not catch it the first time...You can see it here:

http://www.hd-zone.com/amithlon/amithlon.png

It is a 20.1" Dell LCD monitor at 1680x1050.

I personally prefer 1920x1200 much better, as I think 1680x1050 is too wide and not tall enough especially when web browsing.

@HammerD

Let me guess, the 2005FPW by any chance? That's the one I've got. I find 1050 tall enough for most of my needs although 1920x1200 wouldn't hurt...

Yep, and I love it :) Way better than my Dell 20.1" monitors....

I quite agree. All the widescreen monitors are well and good but a vertical resoution is important for web browsing IMHO.

Looks awesome! But, i must be missing something. I didn't realize Amithlon was this attractive an option since it was halted in 2002 with those "legal issues". I seem to remember umisef posting recently that Amithlon was horribly out of date, but this looks pretty darn good to me - how does it compare to a boot exclusive UAE? Is this the 2002 version, or has there been updates since then? Also H&P now longer sell this (as far as I can tell), so how might one go about obtaining Amithlon now?

My site of choice for wallpapers is Digital Blasphemy. Lots of really nice wallpapers, each in multiple resolutions and multiple aspect ratios. He's even got them as iPhone wallpaper!

edit: fixed a stupid typo.

Amithlon was and in my opinion still is, a great way to run OS 3.x on relatively modern hardware. In terms of how it feels compared to a real classic amiga...my personal view is that is the closest "feeling" you get compared to running on real amiga hardware. WAY faster, but just the way it works so closely with the hardware makes it feel legitimate. You don't get the same feeling from any of the "UAE" implementations.

In terms of hardware support - yes, it does not support the latest stuff, but it does still support some vary fast PC hardware - much faster than classic hardware. I run my system on an AMD Athlon XP 2.00 GHz with GeForce 3 AGP graphics card and a nforce2 based motherboard.

Gary Colville has updated the kernel to support some newer hardware and that works pretty well...

You cannot legally buy it anymore "new". Perhaps used. Maybe a dealer still has it in stock. I bought my copy "before" the legal troubles with the product.

Looks very nice. Actually inspired me to re-install Amithlon

One thing I will say though, and its not meant as a criticism, but being that I speak to Klesterjr fairly often, I get a weird feeling of deja vu/familiarity looking at your screenshot. Cant be half as strong/strange a feeling as what Ken himself gets on a regular basis though Oh well, thats the price he pays for his talent I guess

What Meyer achieved with Amithlon and Umilator is astounding and sickening at the same time - what could have been by now after 5 more years of development!

Unrealistic I'm sure.... but I wonder why H&P wouldn't agree to just release the "key parts" of Amithlon that did not infringe as open source? It's totally died now, so what would it hurt? It seems like H&P would block such an effort just out of spite - but why??? what the h*ll are they doing with it now!? I just know I'd contribute personally (financially, developer) if it could mean Amithlon could gain new life.

I mean, it seems like the Ainc./Hyperion stalemate is going to kill Amiga's shot at a future again. So, a resurrected Amithlon may be more realistic at this point, than an available and shipping Amiga OS4 platform

Assuming this is the likely outcome, what would it take to buy back the rights to Amithlon and how many in the Amiga community would be willing to put their money where they mouths are?
