Still no signal from Beagle 2

It'd be an almighty shame if its not survived the landing like so many before...

Be realistic - it took the Yanks three attempts to get a successful result. Not even Europeans could expect to do it in one.

There is another attempt to talk to Beagle2 tomorrow, the results should be known around 15:00GMT. Fingers crossed it hears something. Even if its all gone wrong, it'd still be nice to know what happened, I hate it when things like this happen and there is no outcome!

I had the oportunity to listen to someone on the radio speak about the mars missions. It might have been Richard Hoagland.
Anyway, the Beagle2 project was on a shoestring budget. Many additions were scrapped and tests were not done that would have helped insure success. The speaker stated that it would have been a surprise if Beagle2 had actually made the landing without a hitch.
Well funded missions to mars have had unexplainable problems blamed on the "galactic ghoul" since the 60's.

Well, look at that. Is that the white sands facilities in the background, hehe.

Is it just me, or does anyone else wonder why all of the color photos taken on Mars are of the horiozon? The released photos taken of the lander's gear are black and white, disallowing Joe Public to check the color calibration. Check this image.

The image of the U.S. flag on the disk would show whether the color was adjusted properly, but you and I aren't allowed to see it, except in black and white. Weird.

Thats because there is only one (partial) color photo yet. All other images were black & white (for faster data transmitting of the first pictures).

That's not necessarily true. Even when you can see a known object in these colour pictures, there's no way to know the colour of the sunlight (or other ambient light). If the sunlight is filtered yellow by the atmosphere for example (which I doubt it is), the flag would look different anyway. But you're right when you say it would at least let us calibrate the relative colour of the landscape assuming unfiltered 'white' light.

Well funded missions have been hampered by NASA's recent inability to find its bum with both hands and a GPS receiver - take, for example the last time they tried to get summat to land on mars: the probe guys were working in metric (all their weights in kilos, and velocities in m/s) but the propulsion guys work in US-Imperial - all their thrusts are in Pounds - one set left the units assumed, the other assumed wrong - consequently, the thrusts were about 2.2 times too small - The probe CRASHED AND BURNED !!

they seem to have done well with Spirit, though.

another note: Beagle2 cost £35M, and was an afterthought. (ie: constrained by cash, weight and time) Spirit cost ~$135M and was the sole purpose of the mission.

If Beagle 2 fails, I think they should try again - probably at the time of the next conjunction, in a couple of years.

OMG, lbs thrust?

All scientists/engioneers involved in this kind of work who do not use the SI system for their calculations should be fired. There is absolutely no valid reason for using imperial units in engineering - its a total joke, ####ing up calculations by introducing all kinds of nonsense scaling factors into everything just to make the maths work.

-edit-

We cant say screwing?

Howdo Carlos,

I know, fscking mad innit ?! but hey, thats NASA for you.

even when Concorde was being invented, we (pre decimalisation) were working in imperial and the french in SI. a lot of time and care was spent CONVERTING CAREFULLY between the two - and look at that for a beautiful piece of engineering !

@Bodie, I dare ya - but I dread to think how many floppies you'll need !

Take one of the small screws and screw it into place with a screwdriver. This is known as screwing.

Seems to work

2MB A1200 doesn't imply floppy based, no modem.

Harddrives able to store 41 megs of picture isn't excactly rocket science

@olegil,

nope, more like electromagnetic engineering. much harder !

besides, dont want to make Bodie's job too easy, do we ? muahahaha !

/edit:
Skyraker,
its more like Dudley, on one of its better days...
or the Mander Centre once theyve finished it

See!
