@tiffers

Got my X1000 Wed May 2 from FedEx office just before 9pm closing time.
Arrived in perfect physical condition (after some unexpected, fun
Custom's Import paperwork foo-pharah). I work, so I only got as far as
booting up, setting up prefs, listening to some of the sound in the
"Media" folder, and having network troubles.

I have 2 complaints but NOWHERE to officially get them addressed. I
am as you can imagine anxious for answers.

====================================================
1) [error]: Could not open rtl8139.device unit 0 (Device/unit failed to open)

2) The "POPS!" when any of the audio starts hurts my ears. I couldn't
even find a way to reduce the volume (but it was late at night so I
wasn't at my investigative best).
====================================================

Thursday after work (and house chores) I tried again with the above
with no improvement, so I opened a ticket at AmiKit. They listed the
email as arriving after their midnight, making it Friday May 4. The
are following their stated policy of not having to reply for 2
business days, so I won't find anything until Monday evening after
work... unless I want to get up early on a Monday morning. Whatever
they could say I wouldn't have time to act upon then anyway.

May 3 I boogied over to Hyperion and sought registration for the
forum. The morning of May 4, I was given my registration confirmation.
Alas, I could not post in the X1000 forum (the only forum I was
interested in). It wasn't until last night I found that I could post
elsewhere in the forums, just not where I cared about. Evidently I
have to wait for some undisclosed period of time for an invitation to
the X1000 forum. I got questions about my expensive, highly desired
system right now. Hence,

Anybody have a suggestion short of boxing it all back up and then wait
for permission to ship it back to England from Texas?

Can you try to go into the prefs catalog and start internet(prefs). Then a internet preferences window should appear. Does it show anything under interfaces? What kind of internet coonection do you have? Did you remember to insert the internet cable in the internet card and not on the internet on the computer?

@Antique

Tried numerous scenarios all to no avail.
I am using the very ehternet cable that I am writing to you with. I did read the QuickStartGuide to use the BRAND X (rtl3139?) ethernet card connector. Tried using the "WIZARD", tried copying what is over there on the A1. Tried with cable starting already in. Tried plugging it in after it was booted up.
Tried other network device programs since I don't know rtl8139 anyway.

None of that made a whit of difference. Oh well, AmiKit will have said SOMETHING by the time I get home Monday evening.

@ggw

Do you use dhcp?

If so then you can try the following...

Prefs/internet
If there si a line in interface... Delete it. Click new button.
Select device driver. I have rtl8139. Not sure what you have.
Device type should say ethernet.
Click on the try dynamic configuraton. and click use.
The click save.
Should have set up dhcp internet.

@ggw

Other than your reply that you did "read the QuickStartGuide to use the BRAND X (rtl3139) ethernet card", you don't make it really clear to us reading your posts, that you are in fact using the provided Ethernet and Sound PCI cards, and not using the Nemo2.1 Motherboard Ethernet and Sound port connectors.

As for the delay in getting access to the Hyperion Support Forums, you can hardly blame A-Eon, or AmigaKit, or the "First Contact" X1000 for that problem, but I understand your frustration. I strongly suggest that every X1000 buyer sign up for access to the support forums as soon as they receive the serial number of their X1000 from AmigaKit in the email sent to them before their system is shipped, so that by the time their X1000 arrives on their door step, they will have their support forum access all set up and working, so they will not have to wait any amount of time before they can post messages on the X1000 support forum.

I have not experienced any of the problems you are describing and I am not a technical wizard, so I can't offer any help, but don't panic so quickly and give AmigaKit and A-Eon a chance to respond to your problems and concerns. Make sure that this is not any kind of user error on your part while you are waiting and most of all, you should remember that this is basically a Beta level release of a product, not a Final Release product that has all of the drivers and tons of testing done on it already. There are going to be some bugs still yet to be found with these systems, at least that is what I am expecting. I will be very surprised if there are zero problems or bugs reported.

I won't consider the X1000 to be at a stable Final Release until all the missing drivers are completed and have been tested for at least 3 to 6 months. Remember this is not a mass produced Dell, or HP, or what ever big name PC seller out there with thousands of employees and hundreds of thousands of R&D dollars spent. If you didn't know what you were buying, perhaps you should pack it back up and return it to AmigaKit, as there are many other people waiting in line to purchase an X1000 that would like to take your place.

If there is a fault in your system, you are lucky, because there is no better online retailer than AmigaKit when it comes to customer service. They will take care of you, in resolving this problem, so just give them a chance before you go to a public forum looking for help that they can't give you, unless you just want a shoulder to ........ well you know what people do on their friends shoulders.

They have been known (Amigakit) to reply over the weekend, but also remember it's a bank holiday weekend in the UK, so you may not hear anything until Tuesday

Amigakit ships the box, they send the serial to ssolie, he emails it to the customer after documenting the info, the customer then registers the serial number on the Hyperion web site, ssolie, only then, grants access to the support site. Might take 2 days, but they go fast.

ggw has been sent his serial number.

You need to remember that Amigakit doesn't have your router/net setup, they can only verify that the card works with theirs, you might have to do a little work on your end with the right settings.

If you can't get it working, open Prefs/Internet & post the "Interface", "Routes", "Hosts", & "Name-Resolution" entries. The other 2 are at default.

Maybe someone will see something, also post your router IP.

@ggw

If Antiques directions do not help for your network problem (we will get to the sound after) there are other solutions and possibilities.

The problem may be on the computer side or external even though your setup may work with another computer.

What is the cable connected to externally? Modem, router?
In either case it is good practice to reset or power down the device when moving the cable to another computer so the DHCP can start probing anew. This can be very true for the modem as the ISP is expecting a more or less fixed address on your end.

Some routers will not drop their assignment of ports to computer addresses very quickly and it may be necessary to have the cable disconnected for a minute or two before this happens, or a reset.

For the brand/type of equipment I have, I can only use Manual configuration in the Connection Wizard.

Let us know.

@AmigaDave
I never blamed anybody. But you got the frustration part right. AmiKit did not send any serial # until Saturday (thanks for their helping over the weekend, and I did not request that).

@Mechanic
I was told by AmiKit to open up the X1000 and reseat the RTL8139. Evidently the some jostling undid the glue gun blob meant to hold the pci card still. The card was indeed loose. Shoving it all the way in made networking work.

Also S.Solie was kind enough (also on the weekend) to process my serial # into the hyperion forum so I am now able to post to the X1000 forum and will carry on over there.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'll keep those around for the next time I have networking trouble, for surely there will be one.

Yea!

And congratulations on the new computer. I hope the frustration part is behind you and the fun parts are starting now.

Doesn't the X1000 have a screw to hold the (network) PCI card in place? Unless the whole X1000's case was somehow squashed into a non-square shape, I can't see that glue should be required (as long as the screw was tight).

@ChrisH

You will be surprised on the forces applied to the package during transit.

The network cards are reduced width cards and the screw is not sufficient to secure them from the rigours of international transportation. A small spot of hot glue on the other side of the card will usually ensure that they stay firmly in place.

Yes 2 things you can always use are a screwdriver and a glue-pistol.

@Dirk-B

We use a screw driver to tightly screw the PCI card in place but the other end of the PCI card can pop out during transit. Hence we use a small spot of hot glue that end to secure the backed from popping out.

"One of the engineers that was involved in the design of the CPU is now in another company and has offered to port PowerPC version of Linux to it."

Is there any ex PA Semi people that have access to AOS4 & development of it?
(I imagine they would have the know how to max out PA6T performance)

Xena SDK:
"One of the developers, actually the son of the guy that runs XMOS, wants to... they've got PowerPC tools already written and he wants to convert it for OS4."

What's the status?

Xena usable from AOS4 side:
"When we do come out with the commercial system I'd like to think that I'll have an application that can show what it can do."

Any idea when?

Any news?

Things on the pipeline?

Release timeframe for things (+- half a year)?

(just because I'm curious, while hoping for next HW)

I think that an user wrote a first tool to program xena. It's something related to midi and audio, if i recall well.
