Blender show exact rendering time in rendering window at the end of the test.

Then again, you don't need GUI to do rendering in blender (I'd say it's preferable to not use it, as it can increase rendering times slightly)

blender -b scene.blend -f 1

-f specifies the frame number. See documentation for other options.

Now do you see anything odd in here? I'd say the first two are dual core results. And the Blender result from Piru is from version 2.63 so now you can compare the results with X1000.

@KimmoK

Board: ACube Systems Sam460ex Lite
CPU: 460ex @ 1 Ghz
RAM: DDR2 667 Mhz - 512 MB
OS: Linux Debian 6 stable
Kernel: 3.3.5

Blender 2.49 takes 11:49.82 seconds (running the test from a shell)

Next days I'll retry the test on a a Sam460ex Full 1.15 Ghz

@m3x

I get 18:07:54 on my Sam440ep-flex 800mhz from cli .

With the recent interest in Linux for Powerpc is there any chance of an updated kernel for the Sam440ep beyond version 2.6.31.5 ?
Interestingly Gnome works with PCI-PCIE adapters and Radeon HD cards ..

@Thread,

Can someone please produce a simple graph that shows the results of all of these benchmark tests?

I am unsure if anyone has successfully reported results of the X1000 running the same tests, of the same version of software, using BOTH CORES of the PA6T.

I am interested in seeing the results of only the same software versions, on the same operating system and version tested on the X1000 using both cores, compared to the dual G4 CPU PowerMac's, dual G5 PowerMac's, dual core G5 PowerMac's, and maybe a separate graph showing the single core performance of the X1000 compared with the G4 PowerBook's, single G4 CPU PowerMac's, G4 Pegasos1 or 2, G4 AmigaOne's, SAM460ex and if available, single core G5 PowerMac's.

All these different people posting numbers using different versions of Blender, or different versions of tests, on different versions of Linux and some using single core CPU's, while others are using dual core CPU's, or dual CPU's, is too confusing and I don't want to waste my time trying to figure it all out. In other words, I would like to see an Apples, for Apples comparison, not an Apples to Oranges comparison that does not really mean much as a real comparison of performance between different computer systems.

Edit: Can someone provide instructions on how to install Mint Linux PPC, or is it the same as Debian Squeeze, using the same Linux kernel that Trevor provided for the Debian Squeeze installation? I have not been keeping up with this discussion (I don't think I have read all of this thread even), and I am also a complete NOOB when it comes to Linux, or any other kind of Unix environment, or system. I am also not familiar with compiling source files into executable files or kernels, or anything like that.

I would like to see how all of these different systems stack up against each other and find out if there is a difference between the performance of Debian Squeeze and Mint versions of Linux.

Yeah, I never found a way to turn on both, but my single core time backs up your dual core time.

I really want to try v2.49 under Mint, v2.62 has a faster render engine. Problem is, MintPPC 11 only allows blender 2.62 to be installed.

Cool, another linux NOOB, I thought I was the only one.

I've always wanted to try linux, so when Trevor put out the install pdf, I decided to see if a noob like me could actually do it. I still hit a lot of walls, but Pat & Trevor do a very good job of helping me break them down.

Trevor is working on an update for the install pdf which explains installing other linux versions, including MintPPC.

You can get a hint of what I had to do if you read page 7 in the x1000 forum just to get h/w acceleration to work, plus I just noticed that the iso dl address has changed, need to report that. You use the same kernel as squeeze & I set up the HD the same, so I didn't need to change any CFE variables to boot after the install.

I would ask Trevor if he needs another NOOB for testing, I have v1.9 of the docs, don't know if that was a public release, but it has the MintPPC destructions. .

We will probably skip v1.9 for the general release. The next version will probably be 2.0 and will include installation instructions for:-

MintPPC
Crux PPC
Gentoo
Ubuntu 12

along with Debian Squeeze (and possibly one other!)

Thanks to Pat Wall for his excellent work we now have hardware accelerated 2D/3D graphics under MintPPC 11. It certainly improves the performance of Blender, both in single and dual core mode.
