You could try to get the serial debug output generated at boot up via a serial cable attached to another computer.
Cards up to the Radeon HD 6800 series seem to be definitely working. They also worked with the previous Uboot and earlier drivers. _________________ Sam460ex : Radeon Rx550 Single slot Video Card : SIL3112 SATA card |

Since my last post, I received another used gfx card MSI AMD Radeon HD 6570 1GB DDR3 (R6570-MD1G/LP)
I am still waiting for a couple of PCI to PCIe adapters to show up in the mail. For now I am stuck with an adapter that has the 8111 chip on it.
That being said, the 6570 card did in fact boot all the way into a workbench 1920*1080*32 mode.
However, it is totally unusable! The system is desperately SLOW when doing ANYTHING!
I am hoping that this slowness is due to the adapter card with the 8111 chip.
Still haven't had a chance to hook up the serial cable.
I also have another gfx card coming in the mail (ASUS Radeon R7 240 (R240-2GD3-L))
This adventure is starting to cost me a lot of money! |

If you got that far you can probably turn composition on in the GUI prefs and find it runs acceptably fast. _________________

Good. You are getting somewere .
My experience was years ago with pre v1.0 drivers and the previous U-Boot. Was using a Radeon HD 6670 plus adapter with an 8112 chip. 2D performance was good . 2D Benchmark
I advise people to stay away from the Oland based graphics cards( Radeon R7-240 and R7-250) as almost all of them will not work with any Sam models .

Composition in the GUI prefs was already on.
I certainly hope that the adapter with the 8112 chip fixes the problem with everything being slow!
UPDATE!!
Just installed the 8112 adapter card and My Sam440 Flex is now usable with the Radeon HD card!
It is however slower than my PCI 9250......... WHY?? Last edited by amigadad on 22-Mar-2021 at 05:35 PM.

I wish I would have known that the Oland based gfx cards won't work before I ordered the Asus R7-240. Can't return it either. Sale was final.

Progress .
With the adapter memory copy functions are slower for smaller transfers. There were some fixes in U-boot and a utility to help . Can't if recall the utility is is still needed but you could try it .

Where did you buy it? Most are advertised as PEX8112 but are actually PEX8111.
What card did you manage to use, 5450 or 6570?_________________ Sam440ep-flex 800MHz 1GB RAM R9250 128MB SB Live!

Thank you. Unfortunately unavailable in Europe. At least they are honest and the adapter is described as 8112 or 8111. IMO you should contact ACube directly or ask Hans about speed. He is very helpful. I may be wrong but the linked tool is for SAMs with an early UBoot. Is Radeon HD 6xxx enough for you? Upcoming UVD support requiers something newer... _________________ Sam440ep-flex 800MHz 1GB RAM R9250 128MB SB Live!

I did notice that the setup utility was targeted for an earlier version of UBoot.
All I want out of this experiment with new gfx cards is to be able to play other types of video files other than .avi
I do realize that the Sam440Flex 800Mhz is not a powerhouse machine. However it should be able to play .mp4 files!
Other machines with similar specs (linux) can play them.
I just can't afford the X5000
I believe that I may have flashed the wrong uboot.
I flashed the uboot with Sam440ep-flex_updater_20201204.zip
I probably should have flashed it with Sam440ep-flex_se_updater_20201204.zip
I have a SAM440EP_FLEX_REV2
Should I re-flash UBoot with Sam440ep-flex_se_updater_20201204.zip ???
What is the difference?? Last edited by amigadad on 23-Mar-2021 at 01:32 PM. Last edited by amigadad on 23-Mar-2021 at 01:30 PM.

Why? I think I have used the same file, not SE. Will check it later... GPU should be in slot#1//66MHz ._________________ Sam440ep-flex 800MHz 1GB RAM R9250 128MB SB Live!

Video playback is a special category. Sam440ep-Flex machines normally use the Overlay feature with the Radeon 9xxx PCI cards to speed up video playback and scaling functions .
There is no overlay with the PCIE cards so playback will currently be slower than with the PCI Radeon card. If anyone can get a Polaris card working with a Sam440ep-flex and the PCI to PCIE adapter then there is the hardware accelerated video playback to be released with Enhancer 2.0. will have to wait for results once someone gets things working to see how well this would work. Theoretically should be much better than overlay with a Radeon 9250.

Sam440ep-flex_updater_20201204.zip is the correct one for your machine.

Radeon HD uses Composition to display the graphics, whery similar to the video overlay because it does support YUV422 format. The rendering is done by GPU once its transferred into graphic cards memory. The bottleneck should only be transferee speed over PCI. (++adapter)
Yes, the RX cards are interesting, becouse more work load should be move to the graphic card, and if the RX card is decoding the video, then you should be able to transferee the video in compressed format. So less bandwidth should be needed over PCI. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 26-Mar-2021 at 05:25 PM. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 26-Mar-2021 at 05:24 PM.
