As SMTube was not present in the Ubuntu AppStore,

I have just compiled SMTube under Ubuntu 12.04 PPC.

It works well, tried with MPlayer, VLC and Totem.

I have already tried the AmigaOS version of SMTube - quite impressive! I will try out the Ubuntu PPC version as well!

For those like me who already bought and received the DVD how do we download the updated instructions when they are available? Will they be available via the A-Eon website download section?

you say that SFS partition cannot be bigger than 4GB but I think
the limit it's 128GB

i think he may have confused it with the maximum file size under SFS/0, which is 4GB. there is a handy table comparing available amiga file systems over on the AOS developer wiki.

OMG, the Amiga X1000 case looks so fiddly/clumsy for adding drives easily !

Nothing fiddly/clumsy about the X1000's Fractal Design case or its drive bays! Each drive bay has a drive sled that can be added to or removed from the case without tools (screwdriver needed to attach sled to drive), and there is plenty of access at the front and the back (where it is easy to plug in cables and route them neatly). Each drive sled has anti-vibration rubber components, I might add. My introduction to Fractal Design was with my X1000, but I like the case design so much that I have since bought two more Fractal Design cases for other PC builds in my house. A-Eon made a smart choice with the case, I think, and the customized door panel (boing ball "facade") is icing on the cake.

I didn't wait quite long enough to see your Ubuntu Live installation procedure before I went ahead with mine, but although a bit different, it worked OK.

I had to buy a CF card; fortunately I decided 4Gb would be plenty big enough. But still I wonder -- could you have turned your 8Gb one into two partitions? It sounds like yours came with the X1000 but would they have put a too-large one in?

I started out with the kernel SDHC card in a USB reader. When I switched to the CF card, I would have worried about the assignation of my card as cf0: after reading yours was made sdc1:! I don't understand the difference, but I guess it's not to worry.

I will read your Filesysbox NTFS accounts very carefully before I go at it. Thanks for the great blog.

Thanks! You've just answered (indirectly) something I've been wondering about for a while... whether I can fit a HP-branded SATA drive with HP firmware (I just happen to have access to a number of these) into my X1000. Looks like the answer is Yes!

8GB was the smallest CF card I could find in the local shops! I suppose I could have created another partition but can't think of a use for it at the moment! Still, it is nice to have future proofing options!

Yes, they are indeed HP branded SATA disks (mine were from a decomissioned entry level HP MSA that were disposed of). They work perfectly in the X1000 - no different from normal SATA disks.

I did intend to use them in a HP Microserver I have at home for running ESX5.x in a home lab, but the existing 4x500GB SATA disks in it are fine and not near capacity as yet.

For those curious how things went (I have had a few ask) I have now swapped the NTFS partitioned 1TB disk as my main HD for AmigaOS4. I now have 10GB AmigaOS4 system partition - and both NTFS partitions are available from Ubuntu straight from bootup - no config needed on Ubuntu side at all!

I copied files to/from NTFS drive in Ubuntu (from the Ubuntu partition) and the files are available in AmigaOS4 too after rebooting into AmigaOS4 - works great!

Note that m3u music playlists generated on the Amiga side don't work when used on the Ubuntu side - and vice versa. The drive paths are completely different between Ubuntu and AmigaOS4 which is why. Will need to create two folder in top level Music drive for Ubuntu and AmigaOS4 playlists to avoid issues here!

I found a few more things too, and no doubt more as I play around a bit tonight...

Anymore I will write more about this in Part 2 when I have done some more things...in my blog soon hopefully work permitting (today was crazy!).

Closer looking, the Fractal Design case looks similar in functionality to the Zalman range.

I said ' flimsy' because I saw one needed to add those white sleeves to the drives, while the Zalman case does not require it. Instead you hand screw bolts to the drive sides and then slide into the drive bay rubber slots and anti-vibration components.

The newer Zalmans also have detachable external drive slot.

If you like Fractal Design case for £100 thats fine. Though similar, the Zalman range are at the £ 35 price point.

I only mention pricing due to it being of importance to potential buyers of new systems to keep prices down as possible.

Some people may want all the fancy styling, but some will question at what price.

People are loosing hope for a sub 500 USD Amiga system.

This may be totally wrong, but I kind of got used to using a WIMP GUI to keep all of my icon-based programs (applications) in graphical folders that I just click on to run. The Dash/Unity method of clicking on the top left Ubuntu icon, typing in a program, and then clicking on it seems counter intuitive. Am I missing something? I installed Ian Berke's Drawers application (program) to group the programs into folders on the Launcher dock, but is there a more "natural" way?
