Wishful thinking again. With MiniGL Most of the graphics pipeline is done on the CPU, this is where the slow FPU will hit the hardest. On the flipside, your Radeon HD cards will stay nice and cool, since almost none of its processing power will be utilized. _________________ This is just like television, only you can see much further. |

Although I agree with your general perception of GPU usage for FP operations, this example is pure nonesense. If you don´t want to play Quake under UAE, FPU emulation is unnecessary.

It depends on the type of software that you're running, and Quake is a legimate software, as well as others which require an FPU.
Anyway, it was just an example of software which cannot make good use of GPU offloading, unless you like to see a slowmotion , to remark that such concept generalization is plainly wrong.  Quote:

Absolutely, but the problem is that they are specific cases, and the concept cannot generically applied to every kind of software.
GPU offloading makes sense only if you can send a certain amount of data to the GPU which can be processed "locally", and the overall gain of the round trip is "profitable". That's a common scenario for 3D rendering, image filtering, signal analysis, etc., but they aren't general cases. |

| This processor is 32bits, the RAM is 64bit, the address bus is 36bits, so I suppose that you can have up to 64GB or RAM no?

Doubling in size and associativity of the MMU's second-level 4K-page array (from 256-entry 2-way to 512-entry 4-way) Increase from 3 to 5 maximum outstanding data cache misses Addition of the Alternate Time Base for cycle-granularity timestamps
64bit registers = 64bit CPU, PowerPC 64bit is backwards compatible with 32bit.
Since PowerPC instructions (even on 64-bit PowerPCs) are all 32 bits in length, loading an arbitrary 32-bit immediate into a register obviously takes at least 2 instructions.

That's wrong. Having 64-bit general purpose registers does NOT mean that you have a 64-bit PowerPC CPU.
In fact, the e500v2 is still a 32-bit PowerPC CPU, even with 64-bit registers, which are only used by the custom FPU which this chip is using.
BTW, you can load 64-bit values with proper, a specific instruction, which isn't in the 64-bit PowerPC ISA. But, of course, you cannot use it for general purpose computations: only for handling two single precision floating point values, or one double precision. |
