It will be interesting to see if NVlink appears also for GPUs for normal mortals & for affordable Power Architecture SoCs... _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

OpenPower Foundation? Look I have seen a lot of foundations alliances and initiatives around PowerPC come and go.
And every year this architecture went some steps further away from the desktop. Maybe we can buy fully size ARM systems in three years in consumer shops but I don't think the PPC / Power will return there.Last edited by Arko on 14-Apr-2014 at 07:21 PM.

I agree... there's just no motivation by IBM or Freescale to make PowerPC attractive in the desktop computer space. I am certainly excited that ARM is heading that direction though. _________________

"I am certainly excited that ARM is heading that direction though."
I have not seen that.
But intel is heading towards tablets etc (away from desktop?).
Not sure if PPC is moving away from desktop. (IBM is investing in Gallium3D and 1billion in PPC Linux)
When apple chose intel and killed PASemi and G4+G5 desktop computer products, at that time PPC went away from desktop. But not much happened after that (if not counting that PPC is sold as desktop today, on Amiga + linux niche).
(& current PPC is anyway / still more suitable for desktop than for example ARM is) Last edited by KimmoK on 15-Apr-2014 at 10:37 AM.

ARM has a nice architecture in ARMv8, but I believe it is going to be facing increasing competition from Intel in the mobile space. Already most best selling tablets are Intel and rumour is that Intel has won the next Nexus contract with 14 nm Cherry trail Atom. Intel is also being very agressive with pricing, there are reports of sub 5$ Intel SoCs being offered to chinese vendors and that Mediatek is facing a lot of pressure because it's not much cheaper than that. ARM has also failed to make a dent in servers and data centers so far. _________________

| Given recent news on the idea of using server racks to run Watson intelligent systems, and having Smartphone Apps to access it, as human interface, instead of waiting while the chips get small enough to use in smartphones directly, I suspect IBMs market for Power Core Watsons is going to increase rather rapidly.
Thats what the next generation of Power core is designed for. Lots of threads, lots of memory bandwidth.
So. Who is going to be first to code Their Watson with How To Code A Compiler?
Who is going to be the first to code their Watson with Project Vetinary. 8)

$14.000 for 20 core by IBM or rent for $350 per month
"IBM’s pre-configured 20-core Power8 server — which ships with 64GB of RAM and is clocked to 3.4GHz. It retails for around $14,000, but you can lease one for just over $350 a month"
http://www.geek.com/chips/google-shows-off-their-beastly-power8-server-mainboard-1592482
so, $1400 for 2 cores :P
if a similar processor could see the light for a desktop/worstation, a design around it may be a pure jewel

| IIRC, cheapest Power7 systems start from below USD4000 and T4240 systems from USD1500 or so, I would rather get one of those, rather than Power8 system to play with as the PPC high end.
@ChromeOS & cloud & etc...
It might be that one day the mainstream runs on POWER by google. ( local dumb terminal on x86 or ARM but real processing stuff on google's cloud )
... "server running commercial workloads like ERP software or Java applications will see a factor of 2X performance boost on system with two 12-core Power8 processors compared to a machine using two top-end 12-core Xeon E5-2600 v2 processors from Intel" But surely the POWER vs intel competition is not over yet.
(some intel Xeon CPU prices) (intel motherboard for "sillySMP_AROShwbuilders")
UPDATE removed x86 soc comment info to another thread...
UPDATE, My observations: Nive to see that Verisilicon is part of openPower. (they designed the PPC460 chip + GPU SoC, perhaps we see more and this time in mass production) And really, what is Samsung or Hitachi going to do with Power... http://openpowerfoundation.org/ http://envisioneering.net/portals/0/articles%27%20pics/openpower.png http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/51143/000110465914038372/g126061bii001.gif Last edited by KimmoK on 18-Jun-2014 at 02:16 PM. Interesting interview to IBM's Steve Mills:
https://www.power.org/media-coverage/ibms-steve-mills-goes-deep-on-the-cloud-watson-power8/
"What are your expectations for your POWER8 strategy and the role and potential for the OpenPOWER Foundation? Unlimited. Inside this device (points to a tablet) is an ARM chip. Inside of your device is an ARM chip. Why is ARM popular? Because it’s an open licensing model. You have full access to the IP, you see the instruction set, and you know exactly how the instruction set comes together. You have access to design documents so you actually know how to make one of these things. And you can extend it and do it your way. So every ARM-based system is in many ways an ARM derivative. Then the next question is why aren’t there an equal number of Atom-based devices out there? Why does everybody keep doing ARM and not Atom? It’s pretty obvious why they’re doing ARM and not Atom. They love the licensing model on ARM and they love the independence that ARM gives them. And they’re fearful of the Intel model, which is proprietary and puts them in a position of being subservient to Intel.
The OpenPOWER licensing model is the ARM model. And we think there’s a big market out there for those that want an alternative to Intel at the server. There’s a reason why POWER8 has been flipped to little endian, there’s a reason why there’s an open licensing model now. And the energy and enthusiasm around this is building at a pretty rapid pace."

"Didn't know that Power 8 flipped to little endian"
There went the binary compatibility then. (unless the endianess is configurable) _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

Interesting that IBM have two programs dedicated to chip development.
7 Nanometer and beyond...
Licensing the power 8 has beed a great move. I hope that someone will come out with a dekstop version of this impressive chip. _________________ retired |

To me, that does not mean Power8 switched to little endian. But the ecosystem around Power8 (OpenPower foundation) justify that. There is a project to define a new ABI for PPC64 in little endian with the opportunity to include some requirements and not having to support any compatibility. A nice and clear read is document on the new ABI for little-endian PPC64
So, the flip is due to the traction of the market, this is not an architectural switch. PPC64 architecture is defined for big and little endian models. |

| Spotted from morph zone:
http://openpowerfoundation.org/blogs/blogpost1/ "This is a single socket, ATX form factor, Power8 Motherboard"
No price info yet.
And also this: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=zh-CN&tl=en&u=http://www.china-core.com/news/html/?60.html "PowerPC instruction set architecture independent design a high performance dual-core chip SoC platform, which C9000 CPU operating frequency reaches 1GHz, with PCI-E, SATA, USB, Gigabit Ethernet ports and other high-speed interfaces, integrated LCD display controllers and interfaces for network communication, system control, high-speed signal processing, storage, and aviation applications." Would be nice to learn more about that board: (development "motherboard") Last edited by KimmoK on 18-Jul-2014 at 06:12 AM. Last edited by KimmoK on 18-Jul-2014 at 05:52 AM.
