Not out of the box. It uses MorphOS API calls you have to emulate/workaround. _________________ Amiga Developer Amiga 500, Efika, Mac Mini and PowerBook |

| The About window of MUI show me 17 files that are "not used" anymore by MUI.
Can I really (I mean safely) delete those files ?

I deleted them and all the apps i normally use that are mui havent shown me anything wrong. You can always copy them back from os4cd or if you have a backup. |

Yeah, they were born as "brothers" out of the webkit tree, just like their older sibling "Sputnik".
The early OS4 version developed into the ReAction-OWB and than died a rather slow death.
The early MorphOS-version grew withn parts allready used by Sputnik and on it's way spawned 2 more OS4 versions (1.9 and recently 1.16) with a 3rd on it's way. _________________ - We don't need good ideas, we haven't run out on bad ones yet - blame Canada |

I don't know.
Does Ambient do anything that can't achieved with Filer on OS4 aside from those functions being integrated with normal Workbench operation? |

From what I read Ambient is heavy inspired by Magellan, but still Magellan offers more features (one of the reasons why many MorphOS users donated for the Magellan bounty). As I understand it the basic difference between both is that Ambient uses MUI whereas Magellan not. So I would say a nice to have but certainly not critical (if you can use Magellan). |

I was thinking that myself.
I wonder if a new bounty could be set up to open the source of these MUI classes to save duplication of effort by the AROS devs when they port Odyssey?
Cooperation is better than competition sometimes. |

They are 2 different things: Ambient is a very good desktop environment, and Magellan is an overdesigned thing for systems that lacks a decent desktop environment, or for very particular cases and users. I would never swap Ambient for Magellan, as most MorphOS users (I think a very small minority uses Magellan, even though the 68k version always worked on MorphOS and the native version is available for free - in fact the many that donated to the bounty resolves into what I would describe as a handful). For normal desktop usage, Ambient is easier, friendlier and also has some additional features that I, as a normal day to day user, like (thumbnails anyone?).
Kind regards, Andrea |

I still use Magellan for heavy filemanagement and some special features of it like integrated ftp, hotkeys, startmenus etc. Generally while Ambient has the most features standard users would like, Magellan goes even further with the implementations, which is nice for "power users".
But then, Magellan shows its age visually. Until open source versions get up to date with visual things, it might not be appealing for general crowd. Ambient uses modern design and GUI toolkit, with all kinds of eye candy required by many nowadays. It also takes few features with different route, which might be more appealing for today's audience.
But what's been really nice with MorphOS is that you can run both Ambient and Magellan next to each other on the same screen, thanks to some little launcher program. You can integrate Magellan's features into Ambient usage. You can just use whichever feels the better for the case. For example I have Ambient lister opening when I doubleclick on desktop, but Magellan lister if I middle click on desktop. I have Magellan's startmenues/buttonbanks in use on Ambient desktop, can use Magellan global hotkeys on Ambient or any other screen/program etc. I also have mixed some features between the two, for example clicking ISO images on Magellan will open them in Ambient for fileimage browsing etc. And I can switch Magellan's name mode lister to Ambient's icon mode lister with the same path etc.
So, they both complete each other for me, I couldn't live without either :)

Then I am propably one of the power users because I use it extensively for my distribution
I would be interested to know what is possible in Ambient that is not possible in Magellan except that one uses MUI the other not and that Magellan (at the moment) has no real themeing. |
