>Horizontal real estate will cost you less, just use a 90degree SODIMM socket like everyone else.
Yes... on many nano size board the SODIMM is under the motherboard.
>PicoPSU would be insane - why use all that space, just put the power regulation circuitry on the motherboard and use a DC supply, like everone else.
ATX power connector would be for desktop build and expansions like RadeonHD cards on PCIe slots. (but I have also seen design with both ATX connector and 12V DC jack on a motherboard) _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

From a hardware perspective, P3041 costs nothing to support if you support P5020.
From a software perspective, it's a lot of hassle for little gain.
e5500 should be in full focus by now, and it does open up some really nice, cheap and small opportunities. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). with e6500 based CPUs now readily available, e5500 is a waste of time and money. From T2080 to T4240 it covers everything needed and can be had from 99 $ upwards... _________________

P5040 is still fastest in single core non-AltiVec depending applications. |

I am curious . What would be the better option for a Dual core supporting AmigaOS. A P5010 at 5800 mips or dual core core processor at about 2900 mips per core ?

IMO, P3041 would be waste of effort. P5010 should be used in the cheapest x5000 variant. |

Single core performance is more important for us as application support for multiple cores will grow slowly.
Eg. T1042 1.4 GHz, 3.0 DMIPS/MHz = 4200 DMIPS/core
Both high single and multicore (4 cores) performance.
Price? Similar to 460EX. Last edited by pavlor on 03-Jun-2015 at 08:40 PM.

even if it is, it is by a small margin... for which you pay by not having Altivec. IMHO, not worth it. _________________

Methinks thou dost assume too much, but ok. T1022 + SB850 + PSU + sockets and connectors is not THAT hard to get right. Unfortunately I just cannot find any time to do anything like this with two children and a wife and a farm and a job. Was hoping I would get some Amiga time during my paternity leave this year but I ended up knocking down a log barn, one log at a time, instead.
I would say: Schematics two weeks Routing two weeks Getting PCBs back one week Soldering one week Debugging 4 weeks Another run of prototyping, 4 weeks More debugging for 4 weeks. ??? Profit
Now that POWER chips can boot directly from a microSD and it's possible to set up registers for debugging directly in the microSD partition header it's plausible to do all this without even using JTAG.
The OS shouldn't need much effort at all, since it's the same core and a SB in the same family as it already runs on. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). I estimate the price of the notebook to be above EUR1000.

How did you estimated it? |

I just think it should be very difficult to get the price below EUR1000.
At that time I did not know RPi based notebook sells for USD299. But anyway, designing low power config with real 3D GPU card etc. is not similarly simple task. (a lot more power & heat, large battery, etc...).
@Olegil
So with some EUR 40000 (bounty) ppl might get design & prototype tested & manufacturing files for factory... Last edited by KimmoK on 04-Jun-2015 at 01:59 PM.

| @KimmoK: OK, so it was just an idea, not based on some official information.
The problem is that for laptops there's no "standard". They have a different layout, so you need to design a motherboard which matches with one of the existing laptops, which I think can be very expensive. |

Who are customers for this? How many people will buy one? |
I think the customers for this are those working for companies where they use PowerPC as a CPU core for their devices. And where they need to do development on the road and able to test code on a real CPU.
I don't see this as a consumer item. Apple killed that off ten years ago. Though one may say, "Why not just make a laptop that has a built in PPC emulator running on x64? It will go faster."
I also don't see why someone would want to run Linux on PowerPC for the sake of it. It's almost terrible. YouTube will half work, Facebook videos won't work at all and anything depending on flash will completely break. Does he want that NG Amiga feeling?
Good luck getting Linux support. After ten years A1 is still not supported, Pegasos has broken support and X1000 has no support at all! This is from Debian. The messed up distro that spawned Ubuntu which inherited the bugs. Last edited by Hypex on 05-Jun-2015 at 03:41 PM.

| @Hypex: there are already PowerPC laptops. What's missing is the support from OS4. |

Really? i thought there were only x86 and ARM laptops being produced today. Can you post some links please?

Sure: iBook and PowerBook
As you can see, the last models have the latest G4 processors, which had good performance (and Altivec too).
