Let's hope that A-EON/Hyperion don't delay too long as the IT world moves very fast and they might have a limited amount of time before the world loses interest and assumes that the Amiga platform has nothing to offer them any more Oh, sorry that was a concern for Commodore UK and Escom/Amiga Technologies, A-EON are more concerned about Hyperion causing AmigaKit to tie up Matthew Leaman's entire life savings in stocks of machines that can't be sold until they pull their finger out and finish the porting of the OS! The probability of the AmigaOne partners falling out over this must be increasing by the day. The whole "when it's done" thing can't be that funny when all your equity is tied up in stock! I know on Dragon's Den it was always a big no no and it's no different in AmigaKit & A-EON's case. Sad state of affairs and again no marketing because Hyperion can take as long as they like because hey the programmers have to view this as just their second job anyway?! No release date means no ability to market the machine correctly and equals people spending their money on other things because we're all getting older and that is just a fact of life.

From A-EON's website:

Quote:
Reserve your X5000 motherboard or completed system soon from first batch released!

What does that mean? It's like those adverts on TV for the new season of The Big Bang Theory and you know that it's probably going to start again in the next three weeks and if you knew the date you'd set your PVR. However, they don't tell you exactly when instead they just advertise it as "Coming Soon"! In the end because we all have lives you end up missing the first, second or third episode because you don't watch any of the other sub-standard shows on the E4 channel just as I don't check the A-EON website every week!

Selling out depends on supply AND demand.

Selling out is also subject to labelling; A-Eon could simply put a sticker on their site stating SOLD OUT, thus creating a false shortage to increase desire.

It would not be the first nor last time a company has artificially constrained supply to increase interest in the "next batch". It's a simple enough tactic exploiting people's FOMO.

You are at most one buyer. I doubt anyone is buying two of these.

@agami

i know of several people who purchased more than one X1K. i wouldn't be surprised if that is also the case with the X5K as well.

I am worried that because they are carrying the inventory for a long time this will increase the price they need to charge.

How many people are working on AmigaOS 4.x anyway? A half? It is not going very fast.

@tlosm

Today it is surely more like four men in a shed, probably with this poster on the wall

Obviously such a small team is probably working hard just to tread water and port AmigaOS to Tabor and X5000 hardware but AmigaOS 4.2/SMP support would be nice too

For someone who have used classic amigas what is the difference between that and a ppc amiga.

Is there better software that you can run on it. ?

Except for PCIe capability, MorphOS already supports systems that have comparable processing power to the next two A-eon entries.

That really hurts. Could some MorphOS people find out if it will be supported?

I'm happy with the X1000 but I would like more CPU power.

The PA6T has plenty of horsepower, but the 32bit SB600 has a strangle hold on letting it run.

He is asking who is NOW working on 4.X, not who has contributed anything in history including the 3.X range

That's correct. It can't be more than half a person considering the rate at which it's going.

@Signal

I never considered the SB600's structure before.
It is a legacy component from the AthlonXP days.
While it has been used with 64bit processors, it could be a 32 bit part.
I am not sure.

The X5000 will be fully supported by MorphOS 3.10 (or so I am told).
While I used to own an AGP dual 2.7 GHz PowerMac G5, I intend to replace it with an X5000 (hopefully a P5040 based version).
And I have replaced the AGP PowerMac with a Quad 2.5 GHz PCIe PowerMac.
That may never be supported by MorphOS (who knows), but it will make a good system for comparison under Linux.

The snipe about systems of comparable power is primarily aimed at Tabor, which doesn't stand up to well against our already supported G4s.
My last G4 had a dual 1.33 GHz Xserve processor in it and a FireGL X3 video card.
Those machines can have stock processors that at up to almost 1.5 GHz, third party cpu accelerators that can run between 1.6 and 2 GHz, and feature a standard fpu.

Outside of the benefit of running PCIe video cards, Tabor holds no appeal to me (and I can get a G5 for about what a G4 would cost me, so...).
