Thanks all.

Regarding the PATA - IDE adapter. I have tried a lot of these. None let me run both CF and CDROM off 1 IDE cable, also not in AOS3.9. Something with hardcoded master mode in the CDROM drive I guess.

I received some other PCI RTL9029AS cards and guess what at least 1 of them works!! I shows the default vendor and device ID in Ranger. So maybe that env stuff does not work anymore since AOS4.1 FE???

I'm actually posting this from within AOS4.1.

I haven't tried the card in AOS3.9 yet but am pretty sure it will work too.

@spud101

Glad you got the Network Card working...as I said not all cards will work, there are probably hundreds of device ID's for these cards. The ENV's should work but ...anyway doesn't matter, you got a card that works!

Can you try this tool and post output. It's only for OS4, source includes. itm some sort of LIST PCI devices (you will nedd too in DEVS: pci.ids from http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/v2.2/pci.ids)

http://jabirulo.site90.com/temp/lspciOS4.lha

Not tezted under classic machines, on my SAM460ex I get:

#lspci

@jabirulo OK, I may try it out and report here. You haven't planted any ransomware in there have you :P

So a bit more details on my findings:

I got these 3 other rtl8029as cards and had the following findings:

- Micronet SP2082A v2: works in both AOS 3.9 BB1&2 and AOS4.1FE. Ranger shows default realtek VendorID (0x10EC) and DeviceID (0x8029)
- ALN-201C-TB/P also works in AOS 3.9 BB1&2 and AOS4.1FE
- AON-201: Didn't get detected at all in AOS4.1FE (Ranger only showed my voodoo), not tried in AOS3.9. So either I didn't install it properly or the card may be faulty

However there is still a weird issue where the cards sometimes report a wrong vendorID and then are not recognised. E.g. the Micronet sometimes lists 0x18EC in Ranger instead of 0x10EC. Which is just one bit of difference, so maybe there is something weird with a circuit (mediator or A4000 mainboard) I guess (or would this be a flaky AOS4.1 mediator implementation)? Also the AON-201 listed something different the first time I tried (don't remember what). This may also be the reason why I couldn't get the first card to work. I have not reproduced this consistently, so whether the issue goes away when the system gets warmer I don't know.

@spud101

Perhaps use another tool and see if it gives different PCI IDs to Ranger. As well as the suggested lspci there is also pciscan and PCIView. See here:

Not had the time yet to further check the other PCI tools. In the mean time I did receive yet another network card I will test.

What I was thinking though, I guess Ranger is somehow right showing different VendorIDs, 0x10EC vs 0x18EC, as when Ranger shows 0x18EC the card doesn't work and when showing 0x10EC the card does work. So the issue is not Ranger but elsewhere, hardware or AOS4.1 PCI drivers.

@spud101

Did you try this?

Device ID matches but if still gives trouble try this:

SetENV SAVE rtl8029.device/unit0 "VENDORID=0x10EC DEVICEID=0x8029"

or

SetENV SAVE rtl8029.device/unit0 "VENDORID=0x18EC DEVICEID=0x8029"

Given that ID number is just one BIT that toggle on and off, it might be bad connection,
1,8,E,C

divided into nibbles 4 bit groups.

[0001],[X000],[1110],[1100]

X marks the bit that is changing.

Clean the PCI contractor, try different connector.
it might also be one leg on one IC's on Ethernet card that is not attached.
If there compactors on the card, it might be some HF noise, that is not filtered anymore.

After some years I had the (stupid) idea to revisit this AOS 4.1 install again and saw that the network part is still troublesome.

I tried 2 RTL9029 cards. they seem to work OK. In AOS 3.9 they work fine and I get decent download speeds.
In AOS4.1 FE Update 1 browsing webpages works OK. However downloads (almost) always stall. The start slow, stay slow, then stall and in many cases the application downloading the file (e.g. Updater) times out.. Identical behaviour with both network cards (different vendors).

It's not the Zorro3 BigRAM card, since the behaviour is identical with and without the BigRAM card.

Is there some ENVARC I have to set to make this card perform better under AmigaOS 4.1FE?

Tried via different network (hooked it up to my laptop, which was sharing its wifi connection that was using mobile phone hotspot). Same issues.

Sorry, but this AmigaOS4.1 FE is really a piece of c**p. Remember when Amiga was fun? Yes it was before AOS4.x ages ago. What a source of frustration... Even windows is a delight in comparison.

@spud101

I was a beta tester for OS 4.1 Classic up to and including FE. Every RTL8029 network card I tried worked, but again, there are lots of variations out there. Not all of them will work. If it does work it will be automatically detected by the stack when you set up your network using the Wizard. If not, you will need to try another card.

@HammerD

The issue is, it is detected and works. But from the moment you want to download a file that's bigger than 0.5 MB it will almost never finish. It stalls somewhere and then times out. Exact same behaviour with 2 different cards. This is something in the stack, driver or mediator support I assume. I was hoping setting some low level config stuff in an ENVARC could bring a solution (not the vendor di etc, but some config thing)?

I’ve given up ethernet with OS4.1FE(u1?) Classic - a2065, deneb with USB adapters ... all showing same symptoms, push it just a little and ICMP goes wild, ping dublicates and traffic pretty much stalls.

It’s worth noting that Roadshow, that essentially *is* the network stack of OS4, has had many updates on 68k since the last update of OS4.1FE update 1. I asked Olsen about this, and he replied that he has lost interest in OS4 and there won’t be any updates for it unless Hyperion organise another update. I asked if installing 68k Roadshow on OS4 was an option, but he could not recommend it. So... I simply do not use OS4.1FE on “real” hardware anymore, it’s way too frustrating.

I also have given up internet with OS4.1FE on my CyberstormPPC setup, because I sold it ;)
But for years I had the X-Surf 100 configured as Zorro 3 card.
No problems.

@spud101

Maybe time to purge roadshow, install Miami or some thing like that, should work on AmigaOS4.1 maybe you limit your self to 68K browsers, but that must be better then nothing.

Just out of interest what is the MTU as reported by your router? Shouldn't matter but I had similar issues when my router was set to 1500 and it needed to be 1492. I don't know if Roadshow settings need to match MTU exactly or how it determines it. Just a thought. Can be set from interface file.

@Kolla,

Good to know I'm not the only one with these issues. However your answer confirms my opinion on Hyperion (which is not positive).

@Hypex

I don't think I can configure the MTU size on my cable modem. At least I can't find the setting in the management UI.

I checked with https://www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php however.
For my cable modem it says 1500 MTU size.
For the other connection i tried via my mobile phone it's lower.

However AOS4.1 FE had exactly the same behaviour on both connections, so i think it doesn't matter.

So solution to that problem is get different RTL network card.
beg or borrow if you must.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Perhaps an 8139 will be better. So this has been going for three years. For four years I've been trying to work out why the 8139 card in my X1000 is slower than the XE built in Ethernet.
