I have to admit I didn't read the whole article, but the whole "air of mystery" thing is a bit laughable considering VIM itself will give you it's own history. And even if you didn't know about the VIM command, "man vim" will give you the command...

Very interesting. I just copied over Fred Fish 256 and 591 to the 4000 to have a look around. Thanks for that. I always thought VIM was a UK cleaning product like AJAX but then I guess I'm showing my age.

It pretty much is common knowledge.
Unfortunately though the average amiga fan/user these days seems to have a surprisingly small knowledge of the machine.
Its bizarre really. How the heck have so many people followed something for decades, yet remained pretty ignorant to it? Even weirder is that many of these more or less clueless people will defend it to the end of the Earth..... to each his own, but it's downright batty to get so passionate about something you don't even know.
Once again a parallel with religion rears it's ugly head.

Sorry, not aiming any of this at anyone here. It's just something Ive noticed over the last few years.

At some point I committed a few icons for vim, first NewIcon and then GlowIcon... so long ago now :-p

For the record - vim and zsh (in vi mode) are my primary professional tools, third would be ssh :)

Oh btw - true story:

When Qt started, one of the developers were active in the same computer club as I, and he used my A1200 to test the code for endian/compatibility issues. So my A1200 was indeed the first Amiga ever to run Qt.

I'm not sure why you think people who've never heard of Vim or Mesa GL (which is probably true of the average computer user, as well as the average Amiga user) should be aware that both of those started on Amiga.

They probably know that Video Toaster started on Amiga, that the Babylon 5 pilot was animated on Amiga, that Max Headroom was animated on Amiga, that NASA had Amigas, etc.

But Vim? Seriously?

Well, 1stly, I said NO SUCH THING, so don't put words in my mouth.

Also, the average Amiga user *isn't* the average computer user. Its an enthusiast type platform that most who follow it will have done so for over 30 years.
So yes, it is a surprise how clueless most are about it.

I will admit that even being involved with the Amiga since 1988 with 1.3 A500 I didn't know this either.

Wow - so vim is actually from the Amiga - the machine still impresses me - even now.

Bram was suffering from a medical condition that progressed quickly over the last few weeks.

On Linux, Vim is run with vi. So vim must have replaced vi.

Emacs was included with AmigaOS. As well as the Ed text editor.

Edit is the official Amiga line editor. I don't know how popular it was. I found it too limited and awkward being stuck on one line so stuck with Ed from then on and only ran Edit by accident.
