It's a minor thing I guess, but I thought I'd clarify this: HD and DD tracks do actually line up perfectly. Both formats have the same number of tracks (80) in the same positions. The difference comes from that data density on those tracks - HD having double the data density of DD. To operate reliably with the higher density of bits needs a different medium and a different field strength from the heads, which is where the issues arise.

Also:

Amazon Marketplace is well known to be almost as bad as eBay when it comes to genuine products. Plenty of counterfeit, grey-market and non-approved products to be found there, so I wouldn't take anyone's word there on any product's history. If it's sold or fulfilled by Amazon themselves, at least you have some backing there, but in this case, it's neither.

Edit: And the reviews for those disks seem to bear that out, with many reporting a high failure rate when used in DD drives.

@Daedalus

Thanks for clarifying. This article is good for the whys and the effect on data degradation of using HD disks as DD ones:

http://www.retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/guzis.html

and more importantly this text file from 1998:

@BigD&All

I was about to buy 12x10 box of diskettes on amazon.es,but when I saw the prize I was scared as hell,as it was initially 216 euros aproximately and it jumped to 4xx.xx euros!!!

I hope I can forbid the request as I putted 3 music CDs on the list of the order.

Next time I will probably think twice about the ordering of something on pages like this

@newlight

The Vesalia option seemed like a good one IMHO.

https://www.vesalia.de/e_floppydisks.htm

They are a reputable company.

Ummmm.....Is interesting the Vesalia packs of floppy disks.I will study it later but if the don't have labels or even boxes they are hard to buy for my moneybag.

Will study anyway,but are they new? or are they used?

If the have the boxes and the labels maybe I will go for it,but for now I am about to buy nothing except if it has good price and quality.

To me, they look brand new. There are zero marks anywhere, no sign of any wear on the edges or of having ever had labels, no shutter slide marks, no marks at all on the disk surface, and they smell new...

As I said in my post, they're just supplied as-is, without boxes or labels. A while ago someone in the community posted that they had managed to find a couple of boxes of NOS DD floppies in bulk packaging (plain cardboard boxes of 500 disks IIRC), presumably left over from some duplication facility. My guess is that Vesalia bought one of these and are now selling them to end users in packs of 10.

They do feel of good quality (certainly better than some DD disks I bought from Argos around 20 years ago) and, as I said, zero failures of any kind so far from 20.

I recently needed to buy some new floppies to copy my Amiga OS 3.1.4 disk images onto for installation on my classic Amiga.

Checked eBay, didn't really trust what I was seeing. I bought 100 or more bulk floppies for my work back in the day, and was amazed how many of the cheap ones were completely unusable. A lot of those went into the bin.

Finally went on Amazon, and as you've all said, they're not cheap and even here there were plenty of customer reviews saying that they got crap that didn't work. In the end I got a pack of 25 NOS Sony disks that got very favourable reviews. I paid for them, though!

Now, I just need to keep these fresh ones from getting mixed up with the old ones.
