As you know we announced that we support AMIGA and other developers.

So far two complete V4-SA development systems with
keyboard, mouse and CF were send to AROS core developers
to support their work to revive AMIGA

@thread,

The V4 is making me wonder if it is time to sell my A1200 w/Phase5 1260 accelerator & SCSI2 controller w/256mb RAM?

I don't know what my setup is worth, as I don't follow Amiga pricing on eBay or AmiBay any more.

I'm really liking the small size (no external bits and cables all over the desk) specs and performance of the Vampire V4, and the fact that development of the core is fairly constant, with new upgrades coming quite often. Now if we can just get more developers to write new games and productivity software that takes advantage of the features available in SAGA, it could create even more interest in 68k Amiga compatibles.

Well done Gunnar and Vampire Team!

what are you going to do, about not being able to connect a floppy drive? on the Vampire.

Donate vampire systems to developers maybe.

Having said that many times, if vampires are successful, it means that more people have access to RTG, which means more programs can be more easily rewritten to MorphOS / OS4 / AROS, and supporting their SAGA functionality is not so interesting because the market is limited.

And also more people who has RTG means there larger demand to make RTG software and games and demos, I know demo makers are stubborn, but with many demanding RTG it means maybe have small transition. to a bit more modern tech.

@NutsAboutAmiga

demo makers do it to get most from a defined hardware

So I do not expect "Vampire-specific" demos or supporting something like RTG

RTG is just another layer in their view but they want to hack direct on the hardware

Regarding game development that is another topic... up to now RTG (graphic cards) was rare so people developing amiga games used the chipsets directly, that might change in future

Regarding new SAGA features... it depends what your market is

It should be worth enough to buy a V4 and have money left over, especially if you split the hardware and sell it individually. Don't bother with Ebay. Just research the prices on Amibay and offer it for sale there.

You can back up the floppies to ADF and then transfer them to a media suitable for suitable for the V4. The probably means writing the ADFs to CDRW on the A1200 and then using another computer to transfer the files to USB media.

@Rob,

I'm hoping I can get enough from selling my A1200 with the Phase5 060 accelerator and SCSI2 controller to buy a Vampire V4 stand alone system, that would be great. I still have many other Amiga systems, including an A2000 with a GVP 060 accelerator in it and a couple of A4000 desktops that have been converted into tower cases for Video Toaster use, so I don't think I will miss the A1200. The Vampire V4 should do everything that the A1200 can do I think, and mostly do them faster.

@NutsAboutAmiga,

As Rob said, not having a floppy drive is hardly a problem these days, and is not a problem for any Amiga user like me who still has other Amiga systems with floppy drives in them, where they can save the floppy disks to ADF, or some other format for use on the Vampire, or UAE, so not having a floppy drive connector is not an issue for anyone considering buying a Vampire to replace their Amiga system.

One of the main motivators for Vampire cards is supposedly the high prices on “real” Amiga hardware, so to see someone hope that selling a high-end A1200 setup will be enough to buy a Vampire card... there is some irony here somewhere :)

you're a very brave man as there's absolutely nothing (computer world wise anyway) that would make me sell mine

yes congrats to the Vampire team as I know many old Amiga users who just can't afford the real hardware they drooled over in their glory days that are eagerly looking forward to buying a standalone Vampire

A V4 is a V4 is a V4... why is it important for you to have an entire A500+ motherboard as a keyboard controller?

Stand alone instead of an accelerator for an old computer would make more sense, it might be the same price but peripherals will be cheaper and faster.

@wawa

I wont mind a stable, reliable x86 developer system, it does not have to be fast.

Since Vampire can emulate other systems, I think to emulate a small x86 system especially BIOS - one could use the system to write in x86 assembler.

There are more books available in the PC world teaching programming, but running emulation after emulation for different software is a nightmare. Especially when things dont work ( hardware drivers on different motherboards).

The vampire could be a developers dream, to simulate a basic x86 system with fixed audio/video that could use it as as a simulated, but accurate virtual PC - a programmers simulation device, to test hardware and software.

Why not just buy a PC ? Because one could trust Amiga developers to get things emulated properly, can you imagine an automated system that can simulate all windows OS's ?

You could build a sound card in hardware and test it on windows or even fresh Linux builds before AmigaOS testing starts.

One use would be to use windows software in an automated way to test libraries and builds, one could for example test POSIX compatibility across all hardware and show which systems are lacking specific automated API regression tests.

The PC world of hardware is so fragmented and so is Linux - its a nightmare to develop for as hardware keeps changing every few months in the persuit of speed and money that they have forgotten and left behind the true software gems.

Possibilities are endless.
