| While some people argue that anti-virus software and networking firewalls are unnecessary resource hogs, others argue that they are imperative to use, especially considering that AmigaOS currently lacks security features such as memory protection and a "sandboxed" user environment. In this special AmigaWorld.net Weekend Poll, you are kindly asked to describe what kind of protective measures - if any - you have installed on your Amiga. _________________ That'll Put Marzipan In Your Pie Plate, Bingo 💻 Pro-Amiga, 🌍 Pro-Globalism, 🍅 Pro-Vegan, 🛦 Pro-NATO & 🇪🇺 Pro-Joint EU Defense Intervention Initiative |

Tiny community, as soon as some one noticed as virus, it be posted on all forums, and developer of the virus be tracked down and kicked in the nuts.
E-UAE works as sandbox for 68K software, Boot block virus do not work on AmigaOS4.1 Old self-modifying virus has a tendency to break on CPU’s with CPU cache or Emulated CPU's with JIT cache. Windows virus do not work on AmigaOS, no support for VBS or BAT, alien system. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 02-Feb-2020 at 09:00 PM. Last edited by NutsAboutAmiga on 02-Feb-2020 at 08:59 PM. Well.. a "hardware" firewall comes with the router, so why to run it as software in any case? And I'm not running anti-virus software on background, but I launch it separately to check new software manually... so is it using or not in this case? :) Last edited by jPV on 02-Feb-2020 at 08:58 PM.

Years ago, I tried a few different virus checker programs on my A2000HD.
I do not use any anti-virus software or firewall software on my OS4 system.
My wife uses Kaspersky on her Windows PC, and my son uses Windows Defender Antivirus on his Windows 10 system. Windows firewall on both Windows systems.
If I recall correctly, I did not require any anti-virus software or firewall software when I was using AROS AspireOS on our old HP laptop or when I was using QNX on our old HP tower.

At the moment I just use firewall software, Granite, in AOS4.
On my Windows boxes I use AVG, as well as on my Android smartphone.
At work, I use the antivirus my workplace(s) offer. Last edited by marko on 02-Feb-2020 at 11:33 PM.

Don't use anything on my next gen systems. Recently started building an A500+ and using old floppies/cds. Have Virus Checker installed to check those.

| @Petah No because in Amiga ir MorphOS we haven't virus perhaps because the hackers aren't interesting in our systems and neither we have these programs only old antivirus in Amiga68k for boot virus for floppies.

I wonder if using an emulated Amiga surfing the Internet with its dated browsers people have risk being infected on their PC machines as long as YES there is no risk being infected by malicious Javascript code BUT the DNS resolving is being routed to Amiga Emulated Computer thru the Internet Stack of the hosting machine...
Or if perhaps there are no any risks for the hosting machine as long as Emulated Amiga has been put in a sandbox or it has its own direct connection to Ethernet port/Wifi so then Internet connection of the hosting machine and the Emulated Amiga share the same hardware port for connection without interfering each other... :mumble: Last edited by Raffaele on 03-Feb-2020 at 10:33 AM. Hi! I thought you were speaking of anti-virus and firewall software in general. Well I my Amiga systems under emulation under windows 10, and my firewall and anti-virus software works right along with the emulation just fine, and I don 't think anyone would argue that they don't use protection under windows 10 .
Thanks for being here.

Since the poll is in the AmigaOS4 category, the only correct answer is likely to be no to both as there is no real need for AV/FW software.
Obviously viruses are feasible but the few remaining coders left have chosen to be creative rather than destructive, as there wouldn't be much glory to be gained from unleashing a virus onto such a small user base.
Since the OS or RoadShow don't provide any listening server by default, there is no need for a firewall as any incoming request would simply be ignored.
Even with the ArexxWebServer listening to port 80 for 16 years without any packet filtering between my machine and the internet, I haven't seen a single request capable to exploit my XE as all I get is bots trying to exploit IIS and mainstream linux CMS vulnerabilities. It doesn't mean that the AWS is bulletproof but only an amigan would have the first clue what he is looking at and possibly find a way to abuse it.
So on OS4 there's no real need for a firewall, but there is a port of ipf(ilter) by Olaf IIRC which allows doing all kinds of interesting tricks. _________________ AlexC's free OS4 software collection

| I haven't used anti-virus software on Windows since the late 90's when I realized having anti-virus software gets you viruses...
It's sort of like getting the flu from the flu vaccine. No - actually it's exactly like that. After all they have to justify their existence. Last edited by Lou on 04-Feb-2020 at 01:48 PM.

I answered "No, why would I?" but in reality it was the closest answer I could find. To what I really wanted to answer. And that is, "No, because I didn't know we had any."
I haven't checked OS4Depot for a while but I didn't know we had any anti-virus or firewall software. Are there any direct threats we don't know about?
I once tried to get a 68K virus checker working on OS4, just to scan the 68k software I had on it, but it failed to load so I eventually gave up. |

Please... flu vaccines don’t give you flu, though they may cause short lived flu like symptoms as the immune system adapts. Rather that than an actual flu which brings a lot more than just symptoms. If you react to the vaccines, it’s a sign that you are someone who truly benefit from it when the real thing comes along.
