OK brainiacs, we've got an IT cold case for you: Fatal disk errors on an Amiga 4000 with 600MB external SCSI unless the clock app is... just so
Only when the big hand reaches the little hand will the Amiga copy those files

@DiscreetFX

There are some mysteries that are better not solved. At this time of year, we all need a little mystery...

@DiscreetFX

We don’t know what file system she was using; we don’t know what SCSI controller she was using, we don’t know if driver was up to date, we don’t know if there some other software that was installed that messed with the system. And we don’t know what she did before it started happening.

We only know that some memory / buffers get corrupted, so it thinks the CRC is wrong.

Anyway, the scenario describe is also extremely unlikely as the screen buffer is allocated as 1 large block of memory, the right side of screen is not in the beginning of the screen buffer.

Often memory blocks reserved before or after that block memory, if incorrect amount of memory is allocated the software can read into the next block of memory, or previous block, you also have scenarios where it allocated correct, but memory was freed by another program. The result is that the same memory can end up being used by two programs.

It however possible that it’s when the device reads and calculates the CRC, it make a CRC of the block reserved for disk sector and the beginning of the next memory block reserved for “struct window *”.

As a IT person, responsible for lots computers, you wont have time to investigate etch case that closely, and you wont be able to fix bugs in software, you of cause check what program that are started, in user-startup and wbstartup, if any disable this programs, then check the hardware, boot up different boot disk, and maybe check for updated drivers, if nothing works and you have spent too much time you move on to the next face complete backup and reinstallation.

That is lack of memory protection, my friends!

Lack of memory protection made the world oh so very interesting, oh so very unpredictable, and oh so very interdependent, and that's why I and my fellow engineers left it out of AmigaOS.

So exciting, always on the fringe: move a window and you might displace something in the filesystem! Draw a sprite and break sound output! Flush a file buffer and make BigD become sane of mind! Anything could happen.

Alas, today all those snotty programs call themselves "apps" and live in their own ivory towers, shielded from one each other through memory protection there, sandboxing here, abstraction, virtualization and whatnot.

But one day, one day we'll be back to those simpler times, and developers will again harness the power of hardware directly like the gods they are, forging metal over fire with bare hands, trashing hard disks and making your tv set explode if you push past channel 99.

Happy Easter to you too Violent Ken! Just keep asking yourself; who moved the stone? Not to consider the question is insanity! Or how about considering for a second what it would mean for your life if Jesus was God on Earth, you are a sinner on the way to judgement and in need of salvation to avoid hell, Jesus paid the price willingly because he loves you and hence you need to acknowledge him and to decide to live for God!

Wow! That sort of thing might cause anyone to hard reset and stop typing VVVOOORRR while they reassess what's important in life!

Just a sane thought on this Easter Monday with lots of time to ponder life's big questions

@NutsAboutAmiga, and @BigD, and @Mega_RJ_Mical,

I know that there don't seem to be any moderators on this site any longer (and I don't intend to get sucked back into moderating here again, no matter what the tag under my nickname says), but can't we agree to stop the personal jabs and attacks at each other, and keep politics and religion out of the forum threads?

This place would be a much more productive and pleasant place without that stuff, don't you think?

@DiscreetFX

It seems the interrupt line from the SCSI host adapter is broken.

The SCSI device will still be served but only as a result of the interrupts given by the timer device.

This is at least situation very similar to the one they are reporting.

@NutsAboutAmiga

God is eternal, omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. And since Jesus is one of the trinity; Jesus is God. Pay special attention to the word Omniscient:

Definition of Omniscience: all-knowing.

This means God knows everything, including the past and future.

No time travel is necessary if he has knowledge of all time!

@AmigaDave

MEGA_RJ_MICAL started it and it's Easter so I say it's a free goal. You are also entitled to your opinion but if he is going to call me insane may it be for attempting to explain the Gospel at Easter! If not now when IS the time to do it? It limited him to a one word response with no "VVVOORR" for a change, so for that in isolation you should be happy

you jump to conclusions, friend BigD!

I didn't read any of your religious banter: I threw your name in my post just to see if you would bite, and rest assured you promptly did.

ANOTHER SUCCESS!

@MEGA_RJ_MICAL

I'm convinced the man behind the avatar has a soul and a God shaped hole in his heart that all the bravado and cocksure attitude in the world can't fill. I wouldn't be so sure that this is just an opportunity for one upmanship orchestrated by your presupposed higher intellect. You opened up the opportunity for me to talk about Jesus and there will be positive consequences whether for you or someone else listening. The world is too unpredictable and unsettling presently for us all only to yearn for our old hollow way of life to return and the rat race to resume unchanged. Take the time to discover more about the life of Jesus during this opportunity of quiet isolation. God bless friend.

1 John 5:11
Quote:
And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

Happy Easter, take stock during the isolation and for crying out loud get a better catchphrase!

That imply predefined destiny (no freewill) that other vice like starring down fractal where every small change can have completely different outcome. Or do you think every possibility is happening at the same time. Another way to think about our reality is that every action, defines the reality we live in, and there is no predefined reality, we are responsible for our action we are jugged her and now by moderates like Dave, your mom, your dad, or your family or society.

@NutsAboutAmiga

It's more like free will but where God already knows what choices we are going to make. He is continually calling to us (as a relatable Heavenly Father) to follow him and to trust, honour and glorify Him in the day to day decisions aside from ultimately appealing to us to make the one big decision (more like a spiritual revelation hence the term being 'born again') to live our lives for Him in the first place!

Even more amazing is thay He is able to work ALL things for good (Romans 8:28) in the lives of those who love Him. Even the current crisis can be viewed as an opportunity to glorify God and which will be used by God to strengthen communities and to bring spiritual revival. We have obviously all been reminded that we are not going to live forever which should definitely lead us to reassess our standing before God.
