Hasn't X11 been EOL for about 15 years? Just sayin.

Yes, but it is now true - Wayland is the default for the majority of Linux desktop users, due to WSL.

@kolla

I'll be honest, I don't know many Linux desktop users that specifically run it on WSL. In fact the only WSL users I know are colleagues that prefer to use windows tooling for developing server side containerised stuff that they run locally under WSL.

friend deadwood,
Aros hero and only true savior of Amiga,

might I ask, if you're still roaming these halls,
what is your intended endgame with AxRuntime?

I am considering the conundrum -
perhaps similar to what Microsoft faced when they enabled Windows Phone to run Android apps:
won't AxRuntime make Aros itself somewhat redundant?

Truly,
/mega

I assume that by AROS here you mean native AROS that boots on pc hardware. I don't know the answer to this question. Maybe yes, maybe not. You need to also keep in mind that AxRuntime is using full AROS codebase with only slight modifications, so AROS as a project continues with it.

As for where I see AxRuntime evolving, first of all, I'm building AxRuntime and desktop components around it for myself to use on daily basis, to get the Amiga experience without sacrificing on features I got used to using Linux.

Additionally, I see that it can be an interesting offer to some users:

1) current Amiga-like system users who want to get their preferred look & feel, accept being ~90% similar to the "real thing" and at the same time want to access to modern features on hardware they choose
2) current Linux users with Amiga roots who don't want to sacrifice features they use today, but at the same time would like to get "look & feel" of their childhood/younger days.

Given the above 3 points then,

1) AxRuntime relies on AROS development to continue, and continue perfecting AmigaOS API compatibility. Which is good. Correct?

2) Could AxRuntime get to the point where a Linux distro could be packaged, that entirely looks and feels like AmigaOS, with Wanderer or Scalos as a window manager - perhaps all the way down to Preferences management, but with the implicit driver and hardware support of Linux? Running Final Writer and Chromium side by side?

(And with transparent, seamless UAE integration to run that giant library of good old chipset-hitting games & more)

I HAVE A DREAM - never this sentence echoed truer and more solemn,
since that fateful end of August 1963.

Correct.

How close to real thing this will evolve to, mostly depends on how many developers will work on this. As long as it is only me, it will take a long time.

@deadwood

Great progress in a short time. Seeing a display like this with almost nothing on jr reminds me of the days I used fvwm :)

@deadwood

AxRuntime is a very interesting development. Congrats deadwood, I want to see where this product goes. Fascinating times for AROS ahead.

I find it funny that now everyone is praising what they ridiculed ppcamiga for suggesting. Oh well…

New Amiga NG (NG 2.0) should be just Amiga gui and graphics on top of unix.
Open source, hardware agnostic.
Something like Mac Os X.

That's not what he gets ridiculed for, and you know it. And in any case, this is more than just an Amiga themed Linux, it has the ABI to allow AROS applications to run, while sidestepping most of the limitations of AROS itself.

Isn't Aros already and since the dawn of times hardware agnostic already, or am I missing something?

I'll go with "Mega Luther King" given his "I have a dream" bit.

“Amiga themed Linux” was always the answer he got, while this is more in line with what he was asking for. Hardware agnostic remains to be seen, I got a good handful of PPC systems running Linux.
