| AmigaOne was announced 20 years ago! Althought nothing remains from the original concept, new AmigaOne computers are still for sale - quite an achievement in the world of Amiga.
Enjoy the original announcement: Amiga Announces the AmigaOne |

Just think if had target Mac Hardware instead of making there own hardware platform back then, they might captured a few abandoned mac users looking for something different, avoided all problems with SE/XE, and I guess a lot more work focused on important stuff instead of figuring out how to work around hardware problems.
Peg1/Peg2/AmigaONE-SE/XE was pretty silly when you think about it, Sam4x0 maybe not so bad considering they also target that hardware outside of the Amiga market. Of cause building hardware with lower power consumption or higher performance / newer technology then the old mac makes more sense, but competing directly with older mac’s with similar specs, just silly.

No, the Pegasos, especially the 2, was great !
Both choices, Apple or custom have there problems. If we had only Apple hardware as a platform, it would be really boring.

It may not have ended the way people had hoped, but I'm very grateful for the AmigaOne platform and the AmigaOS 4 developers. I've enjoyed nearly a decade of fun with these things, and that won't go away no matter what legal nonsense does to the remainder of the community in the future.
Here's hoping the A1222 will be a success at some level and folks can keep the party going for a few years more!

The Pegasos was definitely an exciting bit of hardware. Too bad genesi couldn’t quite find a successor to it. _________________

I don't know about that, I think that would have been strange. Aside from the fact the first AmigaOne was meant to be an A1200 accelerator, had they used a Mac, I'm sure they would have ran into problems. The first is that Apple were still using PPC hardware, so would they have objected to another OS being sold for their platform? Yes there was Linux, but it was open source and free. The other thing is; and this is going to sound like the old Windows argument, is that OSX also ran natively on the machine. It would soon become obvious that OSX was a superior OS where the web browser worked, had a suite of modern applications, and that XCode pulled the nuts off the OS4 SDK. After a while would you even bother booting OS4!?
Also, the SE was a developer board for beta testers, it wasn't designed to be in public use. So it shouldn't have been sold for use as public consumption. It was certainly wrong also for people to sell it on eBay and claim it was the full AmigaOne or was the XE model and ripping people off who wondered what this "XE" piece of crap bug fest was they wasted money on. When they had in fact been sent an "XE" with a bait and switch.

The Pegasos models were reasonable. Okay you only got a board. But over here they went for A$600 and the II was A$1,000. The cheapest Mac at the time was an eMac G4 coming in at around $1,500 with a full unit and screen. A G4 XE board was $1,400. My setup cost about A$2K. Had OS4 been ported to the Pegaos while it was still on sale that could have been used. Better than the XE and even a rebranded Pegasos II at slightly extra cost would have been quite acceptable. Even as a series II.Last edited by Hypex on 30-Oct-2020 at 03:26 PM.

20 years ago the open source software available to be able to do a Mac port was not what it was when Morphos did it. So it would have been very difficult to do if not impossible. |

Yet Yellow dog Linux which was distro for PPC Macs in the predates AmigaOne's and OS4. |

| OS 4.1 should have come out on PPC Macs and there was even a beta or alpha version. It just never got competed or there was not enough interest in the project. I believe it would have sold well. How well does it run in WinUAE? I have an X5000 so never tried it. Last edited by DiscreetFX on 31-Oct-2020 at 07:53 PM.
