@OlafS25

Everything about it is questionable, in my option, a unknown company with secret agenda.

As far as I can tell their two outcomes, he will force people to apply, or things will continue as it is (ignored).

There might be few companies that like to make t-shirts, mouse mats and plastic cover, or keyboards with Amiga logos, this companies might be willing to license the name for that use. That most likely the only outcome of this.

If they really, really lucky might be able sell it from official web page, or maybe that will be requirement, to sell amiga branded products.

What happen to price of product, with official brand vs non branded product, will this be good or bad for community, will this good bad for market struggling with low production volumes.

@NutsAboutAmiga

You mean Cloanto?

I do not know what they will do. I also do not think they will invest lots of money in a new product line. It would be extremely expensive and risky. Most propably they would license the trademark so you could sell the V4 as Amiga (what would make sense). What would happen with AmigaOS (including 4.X) is difficult to say. For 4.X it would certainly make sense if Trevor D. would buy 4.X and do everything. But it would need lots of investments to make it "modern" and extremely risky too. Trevor D. is more fan with money than classic investor. Also I do not think Ben H. will sell 4.X because he still seems to think it is worth a lot.

If Cloanto would be the big winner and thus settlement agreement would be null and void the legal base of 4.X would vanish (also the legal base of 3.1.4). Nobody can say what would happen then.

@OlafS25

I don’t think Ben H disillusioned, it has cost Ben H personally a lot, to keep Amiga Inc away, he was paid in stock (because Hyperion was broke), and Hyperion is not worth a lot.

@NutsAboutAmiga

I think I read somewhere Hyperion claims to have invested 2.5 million dollar (including costs for lawsuits). Even if true (what I doubt) on a market only potential of a platform is important. The user base is tiny and not really relevant for anyone and the OS needs lots of investments to become modern in todays terms. Most valuable still is the trademark "Amiga". The rest is in reality worth not much to zero. If Ben H. would have offered 4.X to a realistic price Trevor D. would have certainly bought it. Additionally there is the current uncertainty because of the legal situation. If lawsuit is decided we will see what happens.

@OlafS25

I expect Trevor D to almost demand it for free, because Ben H took money for combined business ventures. But what do I know, only speculation like everything else here.

Anyway maybe Tevor D like get clean room implementation, better to own the parts that is not based on original code.

I do not know what happens there...

But the "Enhancer"-Package certainly would not exist if there would have been any chance to buy 4.X.

From what I remember this is what will happen if Colanto got the Amiga trademarks.

OS 3.1 will be open sourced.

Everything that will have the Amiga name on it have to go through Colanto to get approval to use the name. I'm sure it will not be very expensive or difficult and will benefit everyone.

Colanto will not use resources making hardware etc.

This is great news I think! It opens the door to a lot.

With this we will for sure see new Amigas like the C-64 mini etc.

There will be no movement until lawsuit is decided. Depending on the results of the lawsuit different things might happen. Both Cloanto and Hyperion will not invest lots of money in development in my view and Trevor D. will not do either I assume.

for the classic market I think Cloanto would be good news. What they will open source has to be seen. Most valuable in classic market are the roms. If they will really open source the roms who knows. They certainly have no interest to invest money in 4.X development.

@OlafS25

I read or heard a interview with Colanto some time ago and if it was up to them they wanted to open source classic workbench.

I understand very well they have no interest in OS4 or other NG Amiga systems.

It is in classic things happen and are interesting.

OCS with a little guts like A1200 and some fast RAM, HDMI out etc.

Fantastic classic gamer system that can be popular using the Amiga name together with some advertising.
Run, buy, install games directly to USB storage device like a Floppy disk or use the already installed workbench and run things from there.

FPGA systems already here to do this.

Yes, but as this is recent news, it's another win for Cloanto.

Yeah, open source the Workbench binary! Haha. Maybe the 1.3 version for starters. Then release the source code to 3.1 LoadWB.

@nikosidis

There was a video interview of Mr Battilana, responding to some community asked questions. I was the one asking about open sourcing, and he "gently" dismissed the idea. He was more about putting the development into a number of capable hands, open to letting the source be handled in a foundation-like manner if appropriate, but no open sourcing in the classical term.

My understanding is that many components are covered by separate contracts and licenses and he could not plain and simply dump the code into everyone's hands.

The idea that he was willing to increase the number of eyes and hands on the code is still vastly positive, even if not everyone in the community would be blessed with the privilege, imho.

Ok, thank you for the clarification.

What do you think will happen with classic AmigaOS 3.2 after this?
Hyperion will for sure have to pay loyalties to Colanto.

Hehe, it is just insane that people still have to pay license for a 30 year old OS :D

Are you referring to the interview Stephen Jones did? They discussed open sourcing Amiga code, and Mike was open to the idea, but I don't recall the details.

A business is a business. Cloanto or Hyperion, does not change much. There's a company investing money, if not efforts, and that company will have to find a way to have a return on the investment. So far I can only suggest to wait and see. We've been waiting for 25 years, we can probably keep the tradition alive.

Don't forget that the Amiga is a worse curse than the Pharaos's curse. It killed Atari (for not obtaining the chipset) and Commodore (for having the OS), it went on to Kill Escom, Gateway 2000 and the matrioska companies that followed. I bet Cloanto will be paying attention not to be the next on the Amiga's killing list

Well congrats to Cloanto, hope they do something with it other than just selling old license to Amiga Roms and license to Amiga brand name on other people efforts.

Dont get me wrong, Amiga Forever is a great all in one package, but I feel they could of done more with it over the years, specially when I see things like Amikit. Im surprised they don't do a ARM version of Amiga Forever (no not just a Rom package) but a proper skinned GUI emulator with pre-setup etc for people with Phones/tablets I mean they added a lot of touch controls support but for the x86 version seem a bit of a missed opportunity if you ask me.

Anyway as we all very much aware it not the owners of Amiga that kept the brand going its the community and Im pleased no matter what happens that's unlikely to change. Plus we now always got Aros to fall back on no matter what happens which is nice to know.

Yes, that was it!
I think Amiga is a community thing and it seams to me Colanto thinks the same. They are not after restricting it but rather open it up and let people make things, license it.

This is not a bad time for this. With all the FPGA stuff, ARM etc. cheap hardware. Colanto seam to me as just the right part to quality control whatever will bear the Amiga brand.

I do not really care about it...

there is Aros 68k branch developed by vampire developers and then the official Aros branch also in development. If the lawsuits endures another year it is no longer important what Cloanto or Hyperion do or not do
