@fishy_fis

Those Sysinfo values are pretty impressive. We all know that benchmarks don't tell the full story but this combined with some video footage on the Orignal Wings running on the A500 mini I think it should be good enough for the 'classic' games.

However, because it's not obvious I thought I'd clarify the gamepad controls for Worms: The Director's Cut:

A double tap of the Green button is for backflip (very useful).

And to use the cursor with the gamepad rather than having the mouse connected in the main menu/to select a home missile target/in the weapon select menu you have to hold the right shoulder button!!

You even have to have the right shoulder button pressed to select a weapon with the red button while in the weapons menu! Just pushing red won't work! By the way the weapons menu itself involves holding the right shoulder button and pushing blue!

I've just had to instigate a full factory reset because the gamepad controls for Worms DC stopped working completely! It's a good thing I'd already wiped my inputted Worms Team names by accident as that would have been annoying!

A weird bug that could lead to lost saved games and data

@paolone

That sounds nice. This seems like a really nice piece of kit.

But to make it even better, I would have like if they had added an SDCARD reader where the floppy slot is and then if they would start selling blank sdcards but in the form factor of a small floppy disk.
That would have been awesome, to have a box full of small "floppydisks" that you would insert just like on a real 500.

@V8

Or if a SD slot was too much to handle, reposition one of the USB-ports to the 'floppy' location. But that probably would have increased cost as probably an extra PCB, some wiring and mounting-materials would have been needed. Ah well, it leaves room for DIY mods

Some very early data:

Quote:
The UK's Fastest-Selling (week one sales) Retro, Micro and TV consoles

Position Title Manufacturer Year
1 Nintendo Classic Mini: SNES Nintendo 2017
2 Sony PlayStation Classic Sony 2018
3 Nintendo Classic Mini: NES Nintendo 2016
4 Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros Nintendo 2020
5 Sega Megadrive Mini Sega 2019
6 The A500 Mini Retro Games/Koch 2022
7 The C64 Mini Retro Games/Koch 2022
8 PlayStation TV Sony 2014
9 Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda Nintendo 2021
10 Ouya Ouya 2013

To get actual numbers I believe you have to subscribe to the GI Market Report newsletter.
But you can get total sales figures for life of unit. For example Ouya shows about 200,000.

The SD slot in the floppy location had been successfully attempted!

8 PlayStation TV Sony 2014 (~42k in first week)
9 Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda Nintendo 2021
10 Ouya Ouya 2013 (~200k)

I added some global unit sales numbers where I could find them. No guarantees on reliability and some have likely higher total unit sales due to old data but the numbers look reasonable.

The THEC64 Mini has a spot for SD card reader already on the PCB...
https://thec64community.online/post/9940

Btw, the THEA500 mini motherboard seems to maybe have an extra, unpopulated USB port - the one one the edge marked with VCC, TX2, RX2 and GND - it would make sense to at least try use that instead of messing with a hub. I also suspect the RX, TX GND on the the thin edge to be the UART serial port (and console for the OS, that is Linux).

That pretty dam fast if you ask me. I think it very likely this will be under a hundred for Christams, if not less at this rate!

That's fine then. Let's hope it leads to a further boost in sales! It is a good product.

Merely coincidence, but this information is now featured on RetroGames Ltd. facebook.

The article that everyone's referring to regarding sales:

The alternative UK console Top Ten

Perhaps there is more to this than meets the eye?

there's been a flurry of these alternative machines in recent months, including the Playdate, Steam Deck and Analogue Pocket.

the source Matthey and I have been discussing

So, you also need to watch the competition. For example Atari recently had a serious price cut, which might be short term. Dunno yet. But given their internal problems anything can happen with them.

With Playdate (and others) -not- included in the data (above article) and off to very rocky starts, there is opportunity imo to reach the general alternative machine market as well.

Utube broadcasters that don't even know TheA500 Mini console exists and never even breath its name have noted the other offerings have been a disappointment. Perhaps a few units in those hands could prove interesting, since these folks tend to copy news from one another like wildfire. heh.

Retro Recipes, Dan Wood, The 8-bit Guy, TheGebs24, RETROCENGO and MetalJesusRocks to name a few, all picked it up. They sent the prototype to PeriFractic to review ahead of time and even the Nintendo Gaming Press have noticed it! Koch Media have done alright plugging it in my view!

Yes, I know that since I posted the links to most of those folks.

I'm talking about an entirely different segment that scream constantly that they need new content to grow their channels and reach monitization levels and know nothing about Amiga.

The example I gave earlier from someone who had never seen an amiga has 120K subscribers,
if that helps illustrate my point.

They don't deserve a single extra subscriber or any more monetisation if they can't hear the buzz despite claiming to cover the tech sector or retro gaming market!

If you know about the gap in their knowledge then comment on one of their videos or PM them.

Please don't assume that statement applies to all the general retro entusiasts.
It certainly did -not- in the case I mentioned of the fellow with a great number of subscribers who knew nothing of Amiga. He's been doing this since the 80's and has credibility.

Another example, even more extreme.

still the finest piece of journalism on the recent Commodore history

And again, an admitted nostalgia fan. In his case 484k subscribers. Read comments and you'll instantly see how respected he is. A quick google search for his channel and TheA500 Mini also comes up a blank. If I've missed something, please let me know.

I'm not a member of any social media whatsoever, so someone else would have to make such posts. I'm just mentioning what I observe, nothing more.

From recent discussions on this forum we all know that beyond the A2000 and A500 the Amiga had very little exposure in America (the VideoToaster was an exception) plus Americans never had a 'home computer' scene! I am not surprised that many 'influencers' have missed the buzz but I would question their journalism/research skills is they've missed it! I am still finding new videos and reviews over two weeks after the release. I might even do my own!

I've just watched my first negative review and it basically boils down to Amiga 500 purists wanting THE A500 Mini to be locked down to a simple A500 recreation! That is fine but most people (especially Americans) missed out on the AGA era so it is a perfect product for people to see what they missed in addition to the nostalgia factor! Plus an CD32 Mini will never make it to market despite being ideal for this mini console market as it simply didn't sell enough and not enough people remember it.

As to disagreements on what games were chosen, it is sooo easy to put extra games on a stick that everyone should be happy.

... come to think of it, maybe NewTek should release a VideoToaster Mini for the US market!

@BigD

I've seen a few that you could say fall into the negative category.

But if you listen to all the words, it's basically saying it's fine as a nostalgia device.

And we all knew WHDload was going to be an issue when it came to hundreds and hundreds of games being tested after the fact, right?

Nah. If this is the worst RetroGames Ltd. is going to see from a review, they have nothing to worry about.
