WHY!

Why, I wonder with genuine candor,
we are denied accessing the splendor that Amigaworld's past is,
in any way other than using the malfunctioning "search" function?

Take, for instance, the "Classic Amiga Hardware" section.
Over two thousand topics!!
And where are they?
Seven measly topics is all these old, weary eyes of mine can see.

Wizards, sorcerers,
wondrous custodians of Amigaworld.net
heirs to the treasures of David Doyle,

CAN - AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WILL YOU DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT?

/MEGA!!!

@MEGA_RJ_MICAL: well, the site is running on a very old platform, which unfortunately is just maintained the minimum that it's required ("it works? Then it's ok").

Improvements require funds, which just for a site like this aren't worth the RoI.

Maybe some volunteer which is trusted by the owner could help here.

@MEGA_RJ_MICAL

(1) Click "forums" top of home page

(2)Click "Classic Amiga Hardware"

(3)At bottom for "select a forum" select "Classic Amiga Hardware"

(4)Then change the default "last 100 days" to "from the beginning" and click "go"

You'll get a longer page as well as an option at bottom to click numbered pages.

Hope this helps.

Jesus almighty Christ lord and savior of the heavens,
not to mention master of the seas -

FRIEND NUMBER6!
I am not one of the nimrods!

I know that, but,
ALAS,
it only goes back a couple years or so.

WHERE OH WHERE has all our history gone?
Has a book burning of sorts taken place?
An Orwellian erasing of what the new order finds unacceptable or even just simply "outdated"?

ANSWER AT ONCE!!!

...what he said.

You hark back to the old times but I still don't believe you are an Amiga user, just a pompous grump masquerading as a Los Gatos great!

I'm sure all the old threads are there somewhere. Have you seriously tried the search function? Why do you say it's malfunctioning? If you want massive improvements then donate more!

@Violent Ken

And since you're struggling; "seriously" means actually looking for something specific and THEN not being able to find it! I tried it just and found an old thread just fine.

Mega is right: unfortunately it doesn't work.

Actually the only way it try putting a thread_id on the url, but you need to know the additional forum_id parameter. So, you have to try a forum_id until you get the correct one.

It's a mess...

That’s what happens when you replace usenet groups with silly web forums.

Try using a regular Google search, prefixing your search expression with site:amigaworld.net

@MEGA_RJ_MICAL

Perhaps Amigaworld is collapsing in on itself, like Dreyfus's eye in The Pink Panther Strikes Again. The last remaining post will be something about squirrels.

Post replaced and moved thanks to the powerful orwellian editing features of Amigaworld.net!
Nothing to see here, move along!

Thanks for your submission!!

Usenet sucks.

Amigaworld.net is clunky and old fashioned, but it works with IBrowse so I don't complain. The crude post editor with its worthless tag buttons that make it easier to type them in by hand harks back to the bad old days when you were lucky to get anything more than plain text - but this 'quaintness' just makes it part of the retro experience!

I wish it could go back to allowing unsecured browsing though - it slows my A1200 down horribly and really isn't needed.

As for the OP's problem, do we really want people resurrecting threads from over 2 years ago? I can't even remember what the world was like before 2020.

That's what I usually do as well, but it doesn't always work. I assume that the entire forum isn't cached.

The big problem with amigaworld is that it's also very difficult to track the threads and update the cached content, because of the problems that I've mentioned before. So, bots dump & cache what they found by peaking from time to time the site.

The situation could greatly improve by just removing the need to specify the "forum" parameter, which currently is mandatory to see everything. I assume that this information is already embedded on the db for each thread, so it's basically redundant and might be entirely dropped.

A search by post_id would also help a lot (by completely removing the need to specify the thread id and the forum id).

Usenet sucks.

It sucks for you only because you have no tool on your Amiga that allows to access it.

If you like to be stuck with a retro experience then you continue to use some BBS.

The rest of the world evolved A LOT since then.

There might be interesting threads / posts which are still worth to be read.
