It's a virtual machine of sorts. It's not a great comparison in truth.

The pistorm32 uses the CM4 not the Rpi4 and is a much more integrated design.

So would a 1GB CM4 would be enough to run at faster than 060/50 speeds with RTG support?

Based on what the dnetc benchmark shows, it'll slaughter any physical 060 you have to hand.

@Karlos

Amazing! They're only £41 plus the PiStorm32 itself if ordered on backorder! But I guess you'd miss out on a HDMI port if you did that?

Other than that the whole kit with RPi 3A will be priced around 134 USD (tax including).

My mistake, the HDMI, ethernet and USB header is on the PiStorm 32 board itself with the idea that an IO cable is routed to the expansion port slot at the back of the case!

The CM4 Rpi is the one to backorder then!

CM4 Pi on back order! It's a complete no-brainer to be honest!

Well, the current pistorm32-lite takes any "big" rpi.

Well it was talked about using arm processor to run new code, from that point of view we have that (In theory) AROS 68k already runs pretty much everything what Amiga OS runs, and have full access to amiga hardware. So old software would be a compilation away, or who perhaps run inside under a solution like like OSX once did regarding running ppc binaries.

@pixie

The majority of 68K software isn't in a position to be recompiled though. This is the dilemma of AROS in the first place: only software has source code, preferably in C, is able to be ported.

So yes, you could run AROS natively on the ARM in an A1200 with access to all the other native hardware but you'll still need 68K emulation to get the most out of it.

Personally, I'd love to be able to run native arm code on one or more of the other cores on the CM4 for other purposes. For example, you could run a software synth and have it exposed as a midi device to be controlled from your favourite sequencer on AmigaOS.

Yeah I saw that after the fact. Personally I only have an A4000 left so none of them work for me. :D

@terminills/kolla

But obviously the CM4 is smaller and probably more suited to installation in the trap door expansion slot of an A1200? But yes it seems ANY big RPi is compatible even the Zero2. None of them are available to buy right now but if you've already got one, rock on Tommy!

PiStorm32-lite is compatible with
PI3A
PI3B
PI4B
PiZero2 (could be very tight around the HDMI connector...)

And soon there will be a custom made CM4 adapter for PiStorm32-lite. The custom made adapter will offer the best cooling in the constrained space available and convenient access to all IOs (HDMI,USB,Ethernet) through the A1200 Module Slot near the Joystick/Mouse ports without modifications to the Amiga case.

It's a shame we can't repurpose THEA500 Mini mobo as an RPi3A equivalent to power the PiStorm32!

It definitely wouldn't fit in the trap door and would be a real waste of the nice mini case and RGL Carousel software etc but it IS available RIGHT NOW FOR A REDUCED PRICE unlike the RPi boards!

At what point do I need to start shouting "shut up and take my money!" ?

Seriously though. Real 68K processors that are an upgrade from my exiting 040 are as rare as finding a full set of hens teeth in a rocking horse poop. I know you can source LC060 at non insane prices, but even with the upcoming SoftFPU from Thomas Richter, it's just not a tempting path. With the PiStorm32, I get to replace the whole BlizzPPC/BVisionPPC pair. What I lose in PPC compatibility is less than what I gain in 68K performance. Or I could just install it in the spare wedge, which I think is an even more appealing idea.

@Karlos

I would lose access to SCSI through my Blizzard but I'm wondering whether I can mount an .iso image of the Napalm CD-Rom with ImageMount and run it that way? Any thoughts? Other than that I'll have to hack in an internal IDE CD/DVD drive like some others or find a Squirrel interface! Good decisions but decisions none the less! Does AmigaOS 3.2 have .iso mounting functionality built in out of the box? I've got the 3.2.1 roms installed.

Why is it that Sony have solved supply issues with the PS5 and yer the RPi is still completely sold out?

No need! Preorders have already begun though a CM4 will be a neater (and faster) solution when available IMHO.

I think I want the CM4 version. Something that'll fit in my spare wedge. Which I should probably get recapped, lol.
