What a crazy week! It was like AmigaWorld's Millennium Bug!!

Is everything alright now or are the aftershocks imminent?

@Thread

From sibbi (System Admin):

Yeah there was a long downtime. The server crashed and then they went through with a 6 hour hardware check which passed.

I've enabled some kernel crash debugging, should help to isolate this hopefully.

Let's hope the Duck Tape holds together!

From sibbi (System Admin):

Edit: So that went well...In the end, after multiple rounds of crashes it was discovered that CPU 2 had a level 1 cache error which was causing the server to lockup randomly, even in Recovery mode. After that was eventually fixed with a spare server (motherboard probably the culprit) the mirrored RAID was in a state which needed quite a bit of sorting.

It's taken me a bit of time after I managed to fix that to get the server booting again, different network card which needed different settings and some other minor variations which caused the server not fully boot to a ready state. Unfortunately I don't have console access to the server, just remote, so taking the server in and out of recovery mode and trying again is a slow and inefficient way to go about this, so I'm sorry for all the time this has taken. Let's hope we're back.

Wow!!! "Holy faulty server motherboard Batman!"

@BigD

I too would like to know what happened. The explanation, with apologies, should be the top news article on the front page.

Typical Amiga scene behavior. Shroud everything in unnecessary secrecy.

NOTE: I posted the above before @BigD posted excerpts from the Sys Admin. Regardless, I stand by my statement.

Further Note: Why the frack is this running on a physical server? I recommend using a cloud service like Digital Ocean if AWS and Azure are too much of a premium.

@agami

The top news article " Server will be down Saturday..." does include the extracts that I quoted but yes it's a bit unclear hence my discussion thread.

I think after a week of outages we need a topic discussion and a leading news article to be honest (we now have both)! Maybe we could have a Poll as well? How about the following?

What do we need more?

1. A new physical server.
2. A new Cloud hosting service rather than a physical server.
3. A new fire extinguisher for the current server.
4. Another new AmigaOne motherboard design with available components due to the electronic parts shortage.

@BigD

Ha. The last few days it's been down when I tried to connect. Confirmed on isitdown type sites. So I gave up for a few days. Looks like they need to clean the dust out of that one.

Isn't that somewhat self refuting? Cloud or where ever. It still has to run on a physical computer somewhere in the world.

@Hypex

The point of cloud hosting is that your virtual hardware can be cloned, scaled up and down to meet demand and reprovisioned quickly (seconds) and automatically in the event of failure. Think RAID but for the entire server, not just storage.

The problem is that virtusl hosting costs money, while physical hardware you can get for free. Right?

I don't know if anyone else is seeing this but all the forum counters are showing garbage text here. The lefthand menu is totally borked.

@Karlos

Everything looks normal for me, but I don’t know what counters exactly you are referring to.

@kolla

All the left hand side panels with links, who's online, etc, were filled with garbage

Everything costs money. Electricity costs. Internet costs. Time is money.

And please don't tell me that AW.net is running on hand-me-down hardware. Surely with all the "philanthropic" hundreds of thousands of pounds sterling spent by A-Eon/Trev, they could've spared about 50 quid per month for cloud hosting with disk-image backups.

Next thing you're going to tell me is that the single-point-of-failure server is running in some random suburban home, in the storage cubby under the stairs.

Don't be so bloody ridiculous.
