Has anybody a link to share according to the PiStorm32-Lite or the Raspberry Pi 4b or both?

@QBit

There are lots of people building PiStorm 32 Lites. I would suggest searching for a supplier close to you to save delivery costs. Simply Google:

Buy Pistorm32 lite

You could also join the PiStorm Discord channel, people are making them to-order on there.

The real problem is Raspberry Pi availability is low - I pre-ordered one from CPC in January 2022 and initially was told it would be available in September 2023. Then I was told delivery has been delayed to October, then November. Currently it’s going to be January 2024 and that might also be delayed again.

You can take your chances with the scalpers on eBay or the limited stock which comes and goes very quickly. But it won’t be until late 2023 / early 2024 when pre-COVID-like stock levels of Raspberry Pis are available again.

Raspberry Pi 3A+ is typically the most available today, and also the one with best compatibility, so why not get that first and then, eventually, get rpi 4 later? Then you can actually use the system while waiting for upgrade (and might even find out that you don’t really need any upgrade.)

This sounds the A1222. I didn't know AEON was behind the Pi. It's a Raspberry Tabor!

Discord is your best bet. I recommend Fletch but many assemblers are on there. I got lucky and managed to source a CM4 despite lack of official channels! Got it working yesterday! V cool! Hold on in there it's worth the wait!

@All

I like to know if there is a difference between the PiStorm full and PiStorm Lite? The Lite implies a cut down version. But I don't see any details about what it means.

@Hypex

“Full” never really happened due to chip shortage, the FPGA it used became rare and expensive, and so did the Raspberry Pi CM4. So a light variant was created that uses a cheaper (available) FPGA and also regular RPi GPIO pins so that almost any available Raspberry Pi can be used - including the CM4, by using a dedicated adapter board.

Thanks. So it looks like a technicality rather than cut down features. I never bought a RPi so I don't fully understand all the talk about it and there are so many variants these days. Might have helped if I had one since now they are going out of stock. Getting as rare as an 060 now days.

@amigakit

I have a drawer full of RPis but I have a 4 with a lovely heatsink on it which I don't use that I could plug into my A1200. How would this work, or would I have to put up with the thermal throttling?

This eBay source of CM4s has appeared. The jury's out on where they are coming from but it worked for me!

CM4 2GB WiFi Model

Quick! There are limited available! You will also need an adapter board, IO board and a fan in addition to the PiStorm32 (and a RTC which can attach to the IO if you want to keep time)! The setup works really well though!

Not sure what the shipping is like to Australia though!

Thanks! I'm a bit out my depth with these Pis. All these extras things you need to get it all working.

@Hypex

Yeah, well since there is no PiStorm non-lite availability, the CM4 needs an extra adapter board to work with the lite model. Also, it runs hotter than other 3A+ era RPis so needs a fan which is also how you secure it to the adapter board. The IO board was always going to be an extra for the CM4 as it has no ports itself!

Though a lot of users (such as yourself) have set this up I get the impression this board is for experts. Though there are vendors selling it there isn't much other information available. The main page that comes up for the project is on Github and just gives design info. I can't any other basic info like wifi, ethernet or USB being supported. Nor what drivers would be needed. Nice idea but too vague I think.

WiFi, USB etc is work in progress for Emu68 but Musashi has more of the ports supported I believe as does Linux. Emu68 is a bit beta at present but works very well and fast even now!

@BigD

I do agree.
And the latest beta (2.1 hotfix) made it even faster and more stable.
I did some testing with the 68k versions of Quake 1 and Doom to see the 3D performance, it's as fast and smooth (if not smoother?) as my first BlizzardPPC card I had in the 1200 back then.
Also installed AmigaAMP and Warp3D (with the Wazp3D fix to use the CPU as GPU) and the Warp3D plugins is also smooth as with the CyberVisionPPC 3D.

Instead of buying a old PPC card for a Lot of money, and a CyberVision to acompany it for 3D we can buy
Pistorm32 Lite that brings all this speed (although not PPC) for 68k software.

As this card does not replace the onboard chips, rather enhancing the experience adding features like RTG and speed. It can be for real be used as a daily driver.
My current A1200 got new life thanks to this card and I'm really amazed.

I'm curious to see if this power house of a card will bring for software developers going forward, as the real Amigas memory and CPU/GPU power limits is way higher now than ever before.

EDIT:
I'm using a Raspberry Pi 4 on the pistorm32 lite.

And you also have direct access to pi hardware if you use emu68!

Good stuff! CM4 here and report it's plenty fast enough! Does the new fix allow Super Stardust to run without graphicsl glitches on the spinning meteors?

once you emulate CPU’s, it becomes only a software issue, I bet you have space for PPC emulator in there, AmigaOS4 does not need the 68K emulator once the OS is loaded, the 680x0 is parked. it should be too hard to emulate, when you only need to emulate CPU, has anyone tried to adapt QEMU PPC soft core to it? Can someone get APUS booting i wonder?

Not saying it’s a good idea or be earth shattering or anything.

Probably better if Hyperion just ported AmigaOS 4 to emu68.

Let’s face it, the PPC folk who are not on MorphOS are keen to move to System 54. AmigaOS 4 on emu68 would be a new market for Hyperion. And they would make more money than releasing Amiga OS 3.3 for slow 68k.
