Breaking News: A1222+ production underway through a 3-way agreement with ACube Systems, AAA Technology and A-EON Technology

Cardiff: 29/06/2023

In an exciting collaboration of Amiga technology companies, ACube Systems, AAA Technology and A-EON Technology have come together to announce the production version of the long awaited A1222+ computer.

This joint effort brings a new era of collaborative computing for Amiga enthusiasts by leveraging the expertise and resources of the three companies. The A1222+ is custom designed to run AmigaOS 4.x and also supports compatible Linux PowerPC operating systems as well as AmigaOS 3.x under emulation.

The motherboard’s compact and robust design is powered by NXP’s QorIQ P1022 dual-core PowerPC processor running at 1.2 GHz. It is supplied with version 2.3 of A-EON’s Enhancer software package which includes advanced video and graphics drivers and a whole host of updated applications, utilities and datatypes. ACube Systems have already successfully produced updated A1222+ v1.3 prototypes and will manage the new motherboard production and testing while AAA Technology will act as the main distributor for the new Amiga machine.

Enrico Vidale, Matthew Leaman and Laurent Zorawski, the CEOs of the three companies expressed their enthusiasm for this collaboration. They jointly stated, "We are excited to announce our partnership and the beginning of A1222+ production. By combining our strengths and expertise, we aim to deliver an enhanced computing experience for Next-Generation Amiga enthusiasts. This collaboration marks a significant achievement for future hardware and software collaboration between the companies."

Trevor Dickinson, who is funding the manufacturing run on behalf of A-EON Technology added,
“It has been a long and at times challenging task bringing the A1222+ to market. The project has been beset by delays and extreme world events which has resulted in component shortages and massively increased manufacturing costs. I am extremely grateful to ACube and AAA Technologies for helping to make the A1222+ system a commercial reality.”

Amiga enthusiasts who have eagerly awaited the A1222+’s commercial release can now look forward to its upcoming availability. Pre-orders for the A1222+ are expected to open in the coming months, with shipments set to begin shortly afterwards. Customers who committed to A-EON’s Early Adopter scheme will have first choice of refusal after which orders will be accepted on a first come first served basis.

Stay tuned for further updates as we explore the features, specifications, and availability of the A1222+.

About A-EON Technology Ltd.
Cardiff based A-EON Technology is well known for its long time dedications to the Amiga computing scene with its X1000, X5000 Next-generation power user systems and its growing software library tailored to Classic and Next-Generation AmigaOS platforms.

Nothing about a price? I bought AAA pack to get A1222 for a 450€ price.

@utri007

According to a post on the Facebook-page by Amedia Laurent, the price of the A1222+ full configuration will be a bit more expensive than their (Amedia Computers) Sam460LE configuration, which is priced at 1,269 EUR. A board might cost between 900 to 1000 EUR as far as I can see. That is quite a lot more than the earlier pre-order! I don't know if there will be a different price for pre-orders from 2019/20 and those from 2023.

@AmigaOldskooler

Yeah I was the one that asked about that on their facebook page and have received crickets since.

They need to sort out the pricing on these and if they will be honoring their original price of $450 for the board. I understand things changed and the price will be more but 3 TIMES the original price is going to be a NO-GO for me and probably everyone else

Sure hope they dont further short circuit this project by pricing it out of reach for the few folks that have stuck around for the decade it took to arrive.

This needs to be addressed asap.

"P1022 device is "Not recommended for new designs", please use the replacement families Power Architecture (T1013, T1023)"

https://www.nxp.com/products/processors-and-microcontrollers/power-architecture/qoriq-communication-processors/p-series/qoriq-p1022-and-p1013-dual-and-single-core-communications-processors:P1022

At least it's progressing...

P1022's custom 64-bit SIMD extension on GPR (general-purpose registers) follows PA-RISC's PA-7150 64-bit Max SIMD extension on GPR that was on Amiga Hombre.

@outlawal2

the price currently is speculation without information but I would assume that it will be in the same class as the recent SAM batch.

@all

as I wrote already on other boards, the small market that existed years ago has certainly shrinked further. People who were interested left or have no money left for something like that, lost interest in amiga at all or shifted interest f.e. to new 68k hardware and software. Also certainly some who were waiting for A1222 gave up and bought SAM hardware. And because of a propable much higher price than first announced it has to be seen how many then are still willing to buy.

The project is much too late.... 5 or 6 years ago perhaps the chances would have been better

Yes, people need to be realistic.

This is a niche product for a small market that has shrunk a lot since the original announcement, what?, a decade ago.
The economy of scale were never there in the first place and much less now.

So, people, stop whinging. Celebrate that new hardware IS becoming available if this NG thing is your thing. It was never going to be cheap but it is NOW looking like it will become available!
Stop complaining and purchase one if you can afford it and if NG is your thing.

I touch on this in my guide. Either way it is what it is. People will have to determine if the A1222 is for them or not. I enjoy mine and can recommend it to a certain segment of the Amiga market, but it's not for everyone.

Nice! I hope to get one for Christmas, after 8 years of waiting...

Edit: Lack of support for 3D games... not decided yet.

There is support for 3D games, it's just that some don't work yet for one reason or another. Remember that my lists are based on the situation now. Things may be different when the system ships. Give the developers a little time. You can always see the state of things on my Guide, specifically:

Not sure if I understand your question. The board has a PCI-e x16 connector, and you can use any of the supported graphics cards. Obviously a faster graphics card means better games performance. The issue some of the games has isn't related to your card choice; the few that don't work at the moment is because of bugs that need fixing.

I'm hoping the public listing helps to set expectations and also encourage some developers to fix a few of these problems.

I think some of games on list is highly likely to recompiled for A1222, Quake II and so on,
all you need is one developer who is interested in playing some games.

(But I also expect the issues not to be ever completely solved.)

Congrats to A-EON for finally getting to production stage!

I cant imagine the amount of time this product might of just been cancelled. I mean it had software development hell, covid impact, and spiriling cost to production all thrown at it.

As for Costs, I remember a lot of people going about how mad it was to pay close to £2,000 for the X1000, (maybe it was), but I've had my enjoyment out of it (although a few frustrating bugs in the last few years!) Plus Im pretty sure I could sell if for £1,000 or more, because it is a bit of unique bit of kit/history. You cant say that with many other machine. I can also say its likely hold it value more than any other computer released around that time.

I think the only problem for the A1222 is it heavily delayed release, I mean it was annouced in 2015 and OS4 scene was a different market then. I feel it lost a bit of its momentum since then

So I wish them the best of luck with it, hope it can make a few users happy.

And this why it was a bad CPU, as understand it has two emulators now for the FPU.
one at load time and one at run time, surely that has taken time and huge effort to create.

I salute the poor developers that had to pull that off.

68K to PPC JIT compiler for EUAE did take 5 years I believe, so you can only imagine, what effort that kind thing takes to write TWO in man hours. The 7 years delay is not unreasonable amount of time, I think all considered.

(Even wors its probably the last PowerPC to have SPE, as support was dropped in latter versions of GCC. So, effort is useless to any upcoming machines, for example the PowerPC ACube laptop. That has different CPU (more like PowerPC G5 or Pa-Semi PA6T, only with more cores, If they every port AmigaOS to it.)

Delay was also blamed on lack of components from China.

The project should have been killed the moment they learned about their mistake regarding the P1022 selection. Now they are just trying to offload a batch of pre-paid CPU's to gullible, blind name followers. Borderline criminal if you ask me!

"Recompiled"? Funny that. The "A1222" is like the Elbox DRAGON ColdFire for Amiga 68k. Incompatible. Would need "recompilation". Or even porting work.

OS4, the least Amiga compatible of all three "NG re-implementations", floating downstream belly-up for at least half a decade, now getting "new" hardware in the shape of a PPC computer that isn't even compatible to PPC computers as we know them. At a price of your left kidney.

I mean... WOW! You couldn't even make this shit up!

Quote:

Ah, there is just that. "All you need is one developer" to recompile the Amiga SW for this new platform. So who is that developer for OS4 now?

Oh no, that little disclaimer does not put you out of guilt or blame for what you are being part of now; you are actively helping shifting INCOMPATIBLE CRAP that will NEVER reach a level of functionality the poor gullible helpless blind name followers expects it to.

YOU ARE AS GUILTY OF FRAUDULENT BEHAVIOR AS THE ONES TRYING TO RECOVER BAD INVESTMENT PREYING UPON THE INNOCENT!

@all

DO NOT GO NEAR THIS SHIT! IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE "THE NAME"! IT'S NOT EVEN PPC COMPATIBLE! AND OS4 DIED SO MANY YEARS AGO ANYWAY!

Spend your money on something else instead. Like cigarettes. Then at least you will get something for your money, like cancer!
