@hardwaretech

Retro Amiga 68K games have shifted towards the WHDLoad format.

The what? To call it a “format” is stretching the concept of file format too far. And to install or create WHDLoad versions of games, floppies are even sometimes a necessity.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/format
1. the shape, size, and general makeup.
2. general plan of organization, arrangement, or choice of material.
3. a method of organizing data (as for storage).

The word format existed before the computer industry's "disk format" usage.

I didn't state "disk format".

@Hammer

That essentially means it requires a package of files installed on the system. As well as ROMs in the right places. To run the game in a VM. So not a very portable format. An LhA with a game that runs out of the box all self contained would make a better package format.

Floppies are great, especially when you stumble across one you've forgotten about. My Big Box Amiga is a bit clunky with HD installs of some of these old games but if you get a problem you run them from floppy then it's easy sailing!

And neither did I. So how do you define the WHDLoad format? Anything with a .slave file and preferably a data directory?

Most floppies with mold/surface dirt can be fixed. There was a guy at an Amiga show yesterday providing a repair service for disks with a microscope and everything! These things aren't dead yet!

@BigD

I used ADF to kinda replace most of my disk year ago.

Its a bit of shame the old floppy disk will go.

It is. Going from cassette driven 8-bit machines to floppy driven 16/32-bit ones was a revelation.

WHDLoad games have their expected layout.

FS-UAE Launcher has special support for running individually zipped (or compressed with LHA) WHDLoad Games.

As I say, the floppies still out there seem to be doing remarkably well if stored correctly!

Yes, at least one .slave file, one .info file and a data drawer.

Yup, and for it to work, it needs a “database” that contains all the parameters for all the games. This is essentially what all the big WHDLoad games collections are, databases of “metadata” for whdload.
