I think it's safe to say that only dropping unwanted things from the eval design would make the project a LOT more realistical than introducing new features and/or replacing things like the service processor.
What's so wrong with the original design? _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Hmm.. i know this was already discussed somewhere in this thread, but why would you use PCI-X? I noticed the latest X800 graphiccards for example are all AGP or PCI-Express.. the new x86 mobo's also have PCI-Express, so i *think* there will be much more cards with PCI-Express bus available in future than PCI-X..
Beside that, i fear you hardly will get the needed money only from donations... perhaps you should really consider making a real business out of the idea? Maybe some things would be easier than..
Just my 2 ?-cents

Because he's going to base the design on an existing board which doesn't have PCI-Express, maybe?
I think most people are slipping out in some lala-land when things aren't like in the real world... You know, economics of scale, designing gigahertz electronics from the ground up, etc. _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). By my estimates at 10,000 is will cost $2000 per board (~£1000) |
$2000! yikes!
How many do you expect to actually sell? I rekon you'd be lucky if you sold any at that price!
You're making Apple low positively low priced...

That said I'm inclined to think you're somewhat overestimating volume pricing but I don't have figures to confirm this. If the prices really are that high then I don't think there's much point in the project, it'll not sell at that price.

| @billt It would certainly be cheaper to buy a few good books oin this, I can use it as an excuse to finally get round to it, I've been meening to for a while. Otherwise I don't suppose you could photocopy those books for me could you |

I have no idea about how to get tax exemption status in the UK and how it apoplies to voerseas donations, anyway I'm about to freeze donations and contact those that have allready donated to return their money. I have decided that it is not possible to raise the money fast enough via the community but it has at least attracted the attention of a big company |

Momentum have a board bassed on the K8 Crush planned to follow the maple C, the 2nd genreation board listed on the AmigaFive roadmap is intended to use this deign. Depending on when it becomes available it may do away with the need for the first generation. Last edited by digitaldisaster on 22-Nov-2004 at 07:28 PM.

The Northbirdge only support PCi-X and AGP 8x. See above regarding PCI-Express |

Maybe not that much, that is a conservative estimate. Also compare that to a PowerMac, that is the Mobo and 2xProcessors. Add the RAM, HDD, GFX Card, PSU, CAse and bang a full blown computer but not much more in respect to the mobo+CPU cost. A Micro ATX version comparable to the iMac would hopefully be made in higher volumes once a market has been established. This would also be cheaper to manufacture as it is a cut down version with a single CPU. |

The I2C scripts for the PPC405 service processor are provided by Momentum and will be the basis for the ones for whatever microcontroller we decide to use. A small note the PPC405 is not overkill on a dev board as it is usefull for OS devs who need to look at registers and RAM values via the Enthernet port when it crashes Last edited by digitaldisaster on 22-Nov-2004 at 07:28 PM.

Hmmm... Well, I take it that you mean that "big company" is going to invest? If so, then that's good news. If not, then I'm sorry to hear you are having such problems trying to get this off of the ground.

yes I am talking to a company about investing, this is by no means a guarentee as they seem to be quite hesitant, I really have to sell this to them. |
