@All

I just got a DVD-ROM (for free) so I thought that I should try some DVDs to see
if it works, how well etc... But I haven't had much luck this far.

First of all, they're shown as "AudiCD_01........" Is this normal?

All DVDs but one have made AMP2 crash and the one who didn't opened up a window
but didn't play anything.

Using mplayer (with and without GUI) brings up a requester that wants me to assign
dvd (because of dvd://).

What's wrong?

@hotrod

the requester is normal (if you read my post, you can see that i wrote that). Just cancel the requester and you should see the DVD.

@afxgroup

mplayer -vo cgx_vmem::ALWAYSBORDER -framedrop -dvd-device sii0680ide.device:2 dvd://1

i used that line....

worked good but way to slow to enjoy the dvd...any hints?...

its a radeon...

btw i played KILL BILL Volume 1 ... with old mplayer it crashes before the movie starts (protected) so this is looking good.

@Toaks

the DVD are really slow now. Maybe when i succeded to compile with altivec the playing should be more speedy. Even when the overlay will be available the things should be more fast

@afxgroup

You just answered my question, I was going to ask about altivec support.

I've compiled Altivec code using GCC, so if you need any help, just ask. Libmpeg2 claim to be about 2.5X faster with Altivec, so it should make a big difference.

Start by compiling with -mcpu=G4 to enable GCC altivec support, then you should probably replace whatever Altivec check MPlayer has with an OS4 one:

uint32 vectorUnit;
IExec->GetCPUInfoTags(GCIT_VectorUnit, &vectorUnit);

if (vectorUnit == VECTORTYPE_ALTIVEC || vectorUnit == VECTORTYPE_VMX) {
// Altivec available
} else {
// Altivec NOT available
}

That should be it I think.

@AmiDog

the problem is that with altivec i receive wrong colors.. and the porstprocess broke the AVI output. it is strange but is a known problem of Altivec under Mplayer. I've posted a message on the mailing list.. now, i'm waiting for the reply

@afxgroup

Ah, ok. Maybe you can just compile libmpeg2 with altivec support (assuming the problem is with the MPlayer colorspace conversion)?

@afxgroup

Uhm, I can watch DVDs on a 340MHz Pentium2 (using mplayer), why would an 800MHz PPC be too slow for DVD? Does this mean all those who bought G3s won't be watching DVDs?

I really think something else is fishy.

Edit: Ah, you're still missing overlay. That would help, I guess. Very likely it would help a HECK of a lot more than Altivec, since it's a bandwidth limitation, not a computation limitation...

I'll have to agree with olegil on this one. ( I'll wash my mouth with
soap later. ).I can watch DVDs on my 750GX with MPlayer and
they are within a hair of being smooth. Now that's with ide=nodma,
800 MHz, Ross' 2.4.26 kernel and modules, and of course, no Altivec.

A new MPlayer-GUI is in the works. This time in ReAction in C for OS4! Based on the ReAction GUI clone by Dave Norris who was very kind to do most of the hard work for me!

It will have the -dvd-device or whatever switch and the ability to start to with arguments. Drag'n'drop will be investigated too. And perhaps a list of files.. and perhaps MooVId support... :) Let's see what the future brings!

@afxgroup

I type in:

mplayer -vo cgx_vmem::ALWAYSBORDER -framedrop -dvd-device a1ide.device:2 dvd://1

and I always get the following (on cryted DVDs) and they dont play:

Playing dvd://1.
Error getbuskey: 45
libdvdread: Could not open device with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open a1ide.device:2 for reading
Couldn't open DVD device: a1ide.device:2

Exiting... (End of file)
7.Apps:Utilities/MPlayer>

Any ideas?
Mark

@Mark

the problem is it in this function:

* ioctl_SendChallenge: send challenge to the drive

most probably is a DVD-ROM problem.

@Toaks

mplayer use the decss library. If Amp2 or Dvplayer doesn't support it, it is impossible to decrypt dvd
